A cold front passing through an area causes a significant temperature drop (from 60s to 50s or lower) and triggers precipitation, followed by a gradual warming trend as high pressure builds and winds shift to the northeast, creating cooler and drier conditions before temperatures rise again in the coming days.

WAVY Weather Morning Update | May 12, 2026Added:
Now, your super Doppler 10 forecast [music] with meteorologist Jeremy Wheeler.
Well, the rainfall yesterday, I want to put some numbers up there for you and had some good news for folks that were, you know, basically north of Hampton Roads. You had about a quarter of an inch and it wasn't, you know, a drought buster, but it was a nice soaking rain, got you a little something there.
From Newport News South, it really wasn't much. So, on the south side northeast North Carolina, you had a little bit of sprinkles there at times, but there were only a couple of rounds in there. So, Norfolk's going to come up with a zero in the climate, but you know, we did get the rain in Norfolk and the south side North Carolina a few days ago. So, anyway, no rain for today.
We'll have nice weather.
Wednesday looking good, maybe just a stray shower at the end of the day and then we'll get some rain in here again Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
40% is the max though. I don't think we're looking at a lot of rain. It's going to be scattered and it should dry up then after Thursday morning. We'll have be dry Thursday afternoon, we dry Friday. Now, yesterday we had that cold front come in, caused the rain, but also look at the temperatures. It went from the 60s to the 50s and then it just stayed there all the way through the afternoon, evening. We bottomed out about 50 in Norfolk, but some inland locations 30s and 40s right now. So, it's pretty chilly. But later today, we'll get up to 70, it'll be a beautiful day. We just got to warm things up a little bit this morning and then we'll get there. 78° tomorrow, partly cloudy and then upper 60s Thursday, 70s Friday, but look at the weekend, mid to upper 80s. That's both Saturday and Sunday for mid to upper 80s. We're going to start to heat things up and get a warmer pattern going for a little bit, I think.
So, we have a cold front down to the south. It is going to stall out today.
High pressure builds in. We'll have a light northeast wind and a cool and dry day.
Humidity's down, it stays down today, it stays down most of tomorrow, but then it peaks Wednesday night into Thursday morning and then that's when we have that next shot at some rain. It goes up Saturday, but I'm not expecting rain Saturday, but maybe Sunday an isolated shower.
Anyway, I'll tell you out there right now. We have quiet conditions. We may start off with a little fog, but otherwise we've got lots of sunshine and that's going to really continue through the day. Full sunshine at times, winds northeast about 8 to 12 mph, a beautiful afternoon. Highs near [clears throat] 70, but there'll be some 60s near the shore.
Going into 6:00, winds are light and out of the east, mostly clear skies, quiet weather. And then tomorrow, well, we'll start off with winds out of the south and the winds will be out of the south tomorrow and we'll have a lot of sunshine. So, we'll go to partly cloudy skies later in the day, but still a good-looking day. Here's 3:00, no rain.
Maybe a stray shower at the end of the day, a little hint of that. Now, we'll get a round though coming in of showers and a few thunderstorms. This is Wednesday night into early Thursday morning. So, maybe a little bit of heavy rain with that, but it will be scattered. And then a couple of leftovers Thursday morning, but after that we'll be dry and cooler and the winds will be out of the north again.
Highs will be in the 60s on Thursday.
Today, we're in the upper 60s, but close to 70 in Norfolk, 68 Virginia Beach, you got 70 in Portsmouth, 71 Chesapeake, Currituck and 70 Elizabeth City. We got that northeast wind, that's why it's cooler near the shore. 67 in Kill Devil Hills, water temps are in the 60s. 65 in Melfa, 67 Hampton, 68 Gloucester, 70 Newport News, 71 Williamsburg. Tonight, lows in the 40s and 50s, not quite as cold. And so, we you know, won't be as bad. Here's your boating forecast. Winds north or northeast 8 to 12 knots, seas 3 to 4 ft, the base 2 to 3 ft. So, there's your 7-day forecast. You got highs in the upper 70s tomorrow, partly cloudy skies and then a few showers and storms Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
Then we'll be cooler and dry Thursday afternoon, highs 69.
