Indian National Arrested After Brutal Baseball Bat Case in U.S | Indians in U.SAdded:
Tonight, from Massachusetts, a case involving an Indian national in the United States has now sparked a wider political debate over immigration enforcement [music] and the local cooperation with federal authorities.
Now, authorities say that 27-year-old Dhaval Amrutbhai Patel, who allegedly entered the US illegally, has been arrested following a violent incident at a liquor store in Worcester. Now, Massachusetts police say that Patel was initially taken into custody on May 16th after an alleged assault involving a baseball bat. Well, according to Worcester Police Department, the incident began when Patel, who worked at a store, got into an argument with a customer. Now, the situation reportedly escalated very quickly and police allege that Patel picked up a baseball bat and struck the man with it, leading to charges of assault and then battery with a dangerous weapon.
Now, following his arrest, US Immigration and Enforcement has now, after taking him into custody on May 18th. However, this is not it. The case has now moved beyond the local criminal charges into the broader national debate on immigration enforcement [music] and the rules and what we call as the sanctuary jurisdiction.
The US Department of Homeland Security has claimed, well, the local authorities in Massachusetts did not notify ICE before releasing Patel from jail after his initial arrest. So, officials from the DHS now say that this decision, say that a lack of cooperation between the local and the federal agencies followed someone with a criminal case to be released without immediate immigration enforcement action.
A statement from acting assistant now say that strongly condemn the situation arguing the individuals who enter the country illegally and are at the later accused of the violent crimes should not be released by even informing the federal notification. Now, the statement also called on a local government to work more closely with the federal immigration authorities. What will happen before that? Now, ICE officials later confirmed that Patel was re-arrested and now placed in the federal immigration custody.
Authorities say that he had entered the United States illegally on an unknown time and place and this immigration case should now be under review [clears throat] alongside the criminal charges.
The incident had intensified the ongoing political clash in the US between the federal immigration enforcement as well as the agencies which are connected with the local government that limit the cooperation with ICE. Now, supporters of the strict enforcement argue that such coordination is very necessary for public safety while critics say that aggressive federal actions can undermine the local law enforcement [music] as well as the trust.
As the legal process continues, Patel now faces both criminal proceedings in Massachusetts as well as possible immigration removal from the United States.
Well, this case highlights how the local incidents can quickly turn and escalate into a national debate over the borders law, responsibility, and a divided immigration system.
