Everyday objects often contain hidden design features that serve practical purposes beyond their apparent function, such as the blue bristles on toothbrushes that fade to signal replacement time, the perforations in aluminum foil boxes for secure handling, and the breakaway devices in gas nozzles for safety, demonstrating that seemingly simple items frequently incorporate thoughtful engineering solutions for functionality, safety, and convenience.

The Shocking Use Lurking Inside Common Things (DO NOT THROW AWAY)追加:
Now, how many functioning razor blades have you thrown out because they got oxidated and rusty? Ew. And how much usable toilet paper have you wasted because you didn't know any better?
Luckily, that can change if you follow [music] some simple tips. Now, let's say you've just arrived back from the grocery store. The bags are full of fresh produce and refrigerated items. If you're a type A person, you probably [music] look at your empty fridge and start throwing your groceries inside without any type of organizational system. Now, if you were a type B, maybe you stop for a moment to assess the situation and try to figure out the best way to distribute your food. No matter which scenario you fit into, I bet you've been storing some essential day-to-day items in a very wrong way.
[music] Take eggs. We're used to them coming beautifully placed in their little carton packages, ready to be picked one by one and transferred to the [music] egg compartment located on the fridg's door. But have you ever stopped to wonder whether that is really the best place [music] to store your eggs after all? Turns out it's not the ideal place for them. The refrigerator door is one of the warmest parts of [music] a fridge as it is being constantly opened and closed, compromising the egg's overall quality. According to food safety experts, there is such a thing as the correct order to store food inside [music] the fridge. Refrigeration plays a large role in keeping your food safe.
The first rule [music] of keeping food fresh is to always check the temperature in the places where you store it. The temperature inside kitchen cabinets should be between 50° [music] F and 70°.
And when it comes to the fridge, it must be around [music] 37° F, while the freezer should mark nothing over 0° F.
Store your refrigerated [music] foods by cooking temperature, from the lowest temperature on the upper shelves to the highest [music] cooking temperature on the bottom shelves. Keep ready to eat foods that need little to no cooking at all on the first fridge shelf. Then organize the rest of your shelves by cooking [music] temperature.
In this scenario, eggs would go on the third or fourth shelf as they cook between 145 and 155° [music] F. Now, bread. If you're a carb eater, you've certainly lost multiple packages of bread [music] before. They are notoriously known for their super fast expiring dates [music] and the colonies of mold that appear from what seems to be thin air and force us to throw away otherwise good slices of bread. Well, here's some good news. There is a way to keep your loaf of bread fresh for weeks and even months. And contrary to eggs and milk, the fridge is not the way to go for that [music] to happen. Instead, separate the slices of bread and place them in a plastic bag. Now, close the bag, removing all air from inside it. Be sure to leave the bag as free from air as possible. That is what will generate [music] its safe storage. Now, place the airtight bags of plastic into a [music] freezer. And voila, your bread can last up to 3 months that way. How about pickles and other condiment food jars?
In order to make them last longer, store them upside down as [music] that will prevent mold growth. And yes, you can keep these ones on your fridge's door.
There's no problem with that. Before we leave the kitchen, try this out.
Whenever you buy a new non-stick saucepan, season it before actually cooking anything on it. First, you'll need oil. Rub on the edges of your pan and place it inside the stove for about 60 seconds. Let it absorb the heat. Then remove the pan from the stove and let it cool down. Wipe off the excess oil. And there you have it. This way, the oil will fill in any small gaps or little pores in the pan, [music] smoothing down the surface until it's all even. You can now expose the pan to high temperatures and it won't get damaged. Now, let's move on to bathroom items. Toilet paper is easily one of the most wasted household items. Even if we notice it, [music] we don't really do much to change the way we go about it. Apart from the classic overunder discussion of how we should place toilet paper, there is a less known mustdo habit that we often ignore. Just to fill you in, in case you've been oblivious to this until now, toilet paper science has long debated whether the correct way to hang the roll is [music] with the loose end draped over the top or with the loose end hanging inside next to the wall. And as much as I bet many here already know the answer, [music] can I have a drum roll, please?
Well, you got that right if you guessed with the loose end draped over the top.
It is so for the simple reason that over provides easier access to the loose hanging end of the paper and minimizes the risk of knuckle onwall germ gathering. Ooh, but now toilet paper ingenuity doesn't end here. Did you know that to reduce toilet paper [music] waste, you should squish your rolls before placing them on the bathroom hanger? By squishing, I mean laying them down horizontally and pressing them down with your hand until their aspheric center has turned into an oval, almost flat in shape. Yes, you should aim at flattening your toilet paper. And no, I haven't lost my mind. That happened long ago. The purpose of this practice is to make it harder for toilet paper to rotate. When you hang it in its usual, more circular form, it rotates too easily. [music] This way, it lets us, the toilet paper users, effortlessly enjoy it in an [music] unlimited fashion. Depending on the force we use to pull the paper, we will end up with twice or three times the amount of paper [music] we needed in the first place. And sure, we could just roll the excess back, but I bet most of us here don't do that and end up just wasting huge chunks of paper. You get the idea, right? Ovalshaped paper equals more controlled rotation and thus less waste of toilet paper. [music] So there then we have razor blades. If you're the person who never stops buying razor [music] blades because the last one you bought 5 days ago is already rusty from your bathroom's humidity, maybe you'll want to listen to this one. It's not true that razor blades have such a short life expectancy. They can and should last longer in our bathroom cupboards.
We just need to know how to handle them.
Now, you don't have to be an expert to know that a warm and moist [music] environment doesn't go well with razor blade steel. So, for starters, you should always dry them after using them, [music] especially if your last usage was in the shower. Then, keep them in a cool and dry spot, maybe even out of the bathroom. They will surely last longer this way.
>> [music] >> Using a rusty blade can be especially bad for your skin, contributing to bacterial or fungal infection. So, [music] that's a big no no for leaving the blade face down in a puddle of shower water. [music] Do keep that in mind. After that delicious shower, some people may head back to their bedrooms.
If it's near bedtime, [music] they might even decide to light that aesthetically pleasant nightside candle and enjoy the most out of its pleasing white musk and warm vanilla aroma. But if your candle has been burning too quickly, [music] try these tricks out and see if it'll last longer. You can trim your candle's wick multiple times and keep it as far away from water and moist as [music] possible. It will guarantee that your candle's wax stays firm and steady and thus [music] continues to burn slower for a longer period of time. A little extra tip regarding candles. Never throw away their jars once you finally burnt them out. Suppose you made it to the end of your candle. Congrats. Boil some water, wash the recipient with detergent and warm water, clean the remaining wax out of it, and [music] reuse the jar.
You can plant a succulent, store art supply, or use it for anything your heart desires. And there you have it.
Little changes in habits can go a long way in your daily life. [music] Be sure to check them out and let us know in the comments below which one was your favorite to try out. Me, [music] I'm going to make candles out of toilet paper. We'll see how that goes. Can you believe it? There are two different ways [music] to drink juice from a juice box.
The first way is the default one, and the second is [music] to flip the straw over so that its shorter side sits at the bottom of the box. Using the first method, you may have difficulty getting the last sips of liquid because the straw can't reach all the corners properly. Some straws have their bottom corner sharper than the top. [music] It's deliberately designed that way to pierce through the seal. That's why some people believe the right way to drink juice is the conventional one.
>> [music] >> Now, let's continue with straws. Do you know there's a correct way to use a straw [music] while drinking from a can of soda? So, you're about to have some Coke. You pop the tab open. Then, you put a straw in the can. Now, you need to make a constant effort to keep the straw steady. See this hole in the top? Yeah.
Turn the pop tab around and put your straw through the hole. It'll serve as a straw holder. No need to be annoyed by the tipping straw. So, what's the best way to eat a cupcake? Turn it into [music] a sandwich. Step one, peel off the paper wrapped around the cupcake.
Step two, carefully [music] divide the cake into two parts. Step three, put the bottom side of the cupcake on top of the frosting. This is how you eat a cupcake like a pro. Okay, another quick word about cakes. People generally use kitchen [music] knives to cut cakes into two parts, but you can use dental floss.
Take a piece of floss and wrap it around the cake horizontally. Hold the ends [music] tight with both hands and pull them in opposite directions. There you go. Now you have an evenly cut cake.
Smooth, huh? You can use floss to cut through a [music] cake vertically, too.
This way you'll reduce the chance of messing up the frosting. Do you use your fingers to dip your Oreos in milk? Try using a fork. Stick it between the wafers vertically and dip the cookie in milk. Well, you try it. I'm sticking with my fingers. [music] Been doing it all my life. Hey, call me a rebel. You put your food in the microwave. The plate is hot and the upper part of the dish is steaming. You start eating. Oh no, not again. Your meal hasn't heated evenly. If you want your dish to be equally warm, [music] arrange it in a doughut shape and leave an empty spot in the center. The middle part of your dish takes longer to heat up. By the time the center warms up, the [music] edges might be overheated. Sometimes you need to microwave two bowls of food at the same time. In this case, you can try placing the second bowl on top of a cup. This will give you a free space for the second bowl. Creative solutions for small microwaves. Now, better to secure the cup first, though. Cleaning the splashed food will take more time than using this method. To save space, you should roll your clothes instead of folding them when packing. They don't get creased when you roll them. Plus, they take less space this way. Okay, we might as well continue with another packing trick. After rolling your clothes, pack them in your suitcase vertically, not horizontally. Your clothes will fit better into the bag, and you'll have more room for other essential stuff.
Drinking iced coffee is a great way to cool your body on a summer day. Sadly, the ice cubes start to dilute the coffee pretty soon, changing the taste of the drink. To avoid this, you can freeze some coffee into ice cubes beforehand.
This way, your iced coffee won't get watered down. It turns out that taking a shower too often isn't good for your hair. [music] Experts say you should wash your hair two to three times a week because overwashing can result in extra oil in your hair.
Do you know there's a correct way to fit salami on a toast properly? Yeah, there's a geometry problem. Toast bread is square, but salami is mostly round.
You can, of course, do it in a traditional way by putting two slices next to each other. But then the edges of your sandwich won't have any filling.
All you need to do is to cut the slices in half. Next, you line the straight pieces with the sides of the toast. You get four slices covering the entire piece of bread.
Most people peel bananas starting from the top, but this way you squeeze the fruit. The best way to peel a banana is to start from the bottom. Hey, take a closer look at monkeys. Apparently, they figured this out a long time ago. Do you want to have more space in the closet where you store your cleaning supplies?
Then this one is for you. You can hang spray bottles on a clothing rod. It's convenient. [music] You can find those rods online or in stores. This way, you'll keep your cleaning sprays organized. Also, this method leaves more cupboard [music] space for other cleaning supplies.
There's a right way to hold a burger.
Grab it with both hands. [music] Now, place your little fingers at the bottom next to your thumb for extra support.
You want to cross out miswritten words?
You can draw a line on top of them, but in most cases, you can still read the words. [music] Instead of scribbling some lines, just write a bunch of random letters on the top of the word you want to cross out. Problem [music] solved.
What is the best way to cut crusty bread? By turning the loaf upside down.
[music] The underside of the bread is usually softer than the top, but try not to squeeze the bread too much. The traditional way to drain pasta is to place the coolander in the sink. After that, you drain the water and put your pasta back in the pan. But this method isn't the most effective. Sometimes pasta gets into the holes of the colander. The second option is less difficult. Place the colander into the pot and while holding them together, drain the water. This way, you don't have to move your pasta from the pot.
This trick [music] works best if your colander fits your pot. If you don't want to buy several colanders, you [music] can still use this method, but you should be more careful during the draining process. Now, does your freezer ever spoil food? You put ready meals and groceries in the freezer. 2 weeks later, you'll open it only to find your food freezer burnt. There are two reasons for this. First, you stock your freezer with too much stuff. Overloading can block the vent. Then, the air inside the freezer won't circulate properly. The second reason might be the wrong temperature. The recommended freezer temperature is 0° [music] F or a bit lower. Now, what's the best way to hold a steering wheel? Most people clutch it at 12:00, 2:00, and 10:00. This is not very safe, even if you have three arms. For those of us with just two arms, the proper [music] way to grab the wheel is to put one hand at 3:00 and the other at 9:00. It means placing your hands where the joints are in case you need to give way to airbags.
Holding the wheel differently prevents them from fully inflating. Toblaron is a fancy [music] chocolate bar. But did you know there's a correct technique to break off pieces of this chocolate? Mhm.
Just push the triangle you want to separate toward the [music] rest of the bar. Who would have thought? Pringles are another hard to eat but [music] delicious thing. While trying to dig a piece out of the can, don't shove your whole hand in there. Instead, use a sheet of paper. Fold it lengthwise and slide [music] it into the can. Then gently pull it out together with Pringles. Now you have a tray of crispy goodness.
[music] Ever wondered what that little hole at the top of your sink is for? There can be one, two, or three of them, depending [music] on the design. These holes may appear under the near rim facing the mirror. They may face forward if they're between the faucet valves. The holes are there to prevent an overflow and to allow air in the drain to circulate. If the hole wasn't there, a basin [music] filled with water would drain slowly because of the resistance it puts on the air going out of the drain. Your bathtub also has this hole, but the kitchen sink doesn't. A bathtub [music] takes longer to fill, so you may get distracted, walk away, and forget you're filling the tub, so it's kind of more necessary there.
The kitchen [music] sink has overflow protection in the shape of the divider between the two standard basins. And this divisor rises [music] lower than the rim.
The majority of hiking backpacks have a secret feature that can literally save your life. If you have [music] one, take a closer look at its chest strap. You'll see there's a built-in whistle on its buckle. It's for situations where you're all alone, stuck somewhere while hiking, or you were in a group but eventually separated from [music] them. Uh-oh. Not all backpacks have a whistle, but those modern ones designed specifically for mountain biking, hiking, snowboarding, skiing, and other similar outdoor activities do.
Now, speaking of [music] backpacks, and I was, many brands have standard models that come with a patch sewn into [music] the outer part in the shape of a diamond. We call this the lash tab or as some say pig snouts.
Originally, the manufacturers came up with this feature so people could carry an ice ax during mountaineering. They made it from leather because they wanted to [music] reduce the possibility of freezing. Of course, the average backpacker doesn't go on such adventures, [music] but the patch is still useful because you can hold and immediately access some items like headphones [music] or a bottle of water or tie your hiking shoes and some other essential things so [music] you have more room inside your backpack.
So, why do shopping carts have a grid system instead of being solid? There could be a couple of reasons for that.
Manufacturers use less metal, [music] so a cart is both lighter and cheaper.
Also, the supermarket staff can see what's in your cart more easily. It's easier to keep the cart clean this way, too. Imagine [music] if it was sealed and somebody spilled orange juice or milk inside of it. It's easier for a cart to drain this way if it's outside in the rain.
Speaking of holes, why do you think laundry baskets often have holes? It's for the laundry inside to breathe. If you use it for dirty laundry, it's harder [music] to vent the sealed basket and prevent your laundry from mildoing.
Also, baskets without vents harbor [music] way more static electricity.
Have you noticed there's a funky [music] little loop on your ski glove? Yep, the one on the finger. These gloves are specifically made for snowboarding, skiing, or some other alpine uses.
[music] Because of the loops on the finger, you can hang your gloves on the pack using a carabiner. Face their opening down and gloves won't fill with any debris or snow while you're hiking or participating in some other winter activities like falling and rolling down the hill like [music] what I tend to do.
Now, even if you're not a professional alpine climber or something [music] like that, it can still be good for you to use so-called carabiner clasps. With them, you can dry the gloves with the fingers upward. That way, if there's any condensation, [music] it won't pull in the fingers, but roll out the bottom.
You know those [music] silica gel packets that come with new bags, shoes, and many other products? Think twice before you throw them away? You might want to keep them because [music] they preserve the freshness of your shoes or some other product you got them with.
These bags are like a drying agent since they [music] drive the moisture out of their surroundings. You can use them for other things, like for instance, when you need to dry out your phone or something else that got water in the wrong place.
Now, when dealing with a stapler, you can [music] accidentally staple pages you didn't really want to put together.
It's not easy to remove them unless you use a simple trick. Pay attention to the front part of your stapler. See that metal plate over there? It's called the anvil. Turn your stapler upside down.
This way [music] you can spin the wheel to the temporary staple option so it won't be so hard to remove the pins.
Yep, the [music] anvil is there so you can adjust the settings for the stapler.
Now, we're so used to toothpaste being multicolored that we mostly don't even wonder why it's so. Well, back in the 1970s, people became more aware of how important dental hygiene is. They wanted their toothpaste to do more than simply clean their teeth. That's why Aquaresh was the first company that came up with a toothpaste that had ingredients for mouthwash, too, which is the blue stripe. Later on, they added red, which represents ingredients that help you take care of your gums.
Aluminum foil boxes have a feature we can truly call hidden. It's not like anyone bothers to take a close look at the side of the box, right? There are rounded [music] perforations you can punch through with your fingers. Just press your finger into the resulting hole and hold it. That's how you secure the cardboard roll while pulling out a foil.
Beanie pom poms look like a cute or ugly if you're not a fan ball on the top of your hat. It may not have a specific purpose today, but it hasn't always been a fashion detail. [music] One of the possible explanations says that beanies are something the Vikings invented because they were looking for a way to keep their ears warm throughout the long cold winters. After some time, they added pompoms at the top, too. They were supposed to prevent the seams from coming apart. Well, I'm guessing the traditional horns were added sometime after that.
You can find a tomato pin cushion for pins and needles in many households.
[music] But check this strawberry dangling from the top. It's kind of weird considering this fruit doesn't grow on tomatoes. [music] But in this context, strawberries are there for needles you're using at the moment so you don't get lost while searching through a bunch of other needles on a cushion.
Take a look at the cap on top of your toothpaste tube or a cream. This pointed cone you see inside the cap [music] is helpful when you're opening a new tube because you can use it to puncture the seal. [music] Yep. No need to look for something sharp or use your nails.
Is there a pattern of blue and white bristles [music] on your toothbrush?
Sure, it looks a bit more stylish like this, but this [music] feature has an actual purpose. Manufacturers designed the blue dye to wear off. This mostly happens at the same time [music] when you're supposed to be getting a new toothbrush. They recommend doing it every 3 [music] to 4 months, but in case you forget, it can be a handy reminder.
Many cars have black dots along the window edges. It's a cool design, true, but car manufacturers probably wouldn't spend so much of their money and time adding something that didn't have a practical [music] use. These dots are something we call fritz, which are different than fritz, the German guy.
When the temperature in your car reaches extreme fluctuations, the fritz are there to make sure the rim of the glass doesn't shatter. Good idea.
Gas cans have a very small second hole.
It's there to prevent some sort [music] of the glug that occurs when air gets sucked into the hole as you pour the liquid out of it. Because when something [music] like this happens, the flow of liquid is not even, which means more of it will end up all over the floor. The hole is also there to help vent the gas and prevent [music] the can from bursting in between uses. And that's a good idea, too.
[music] The queen's guard all appear to have the same uniform with a shared role of standing stoically for a long time.
But if you look closely at their hats, there are five different types.
The Grenadier has a white plume, the Cold Stream has a red one, the Irish a blue plume, the Welsh green and white, and the Scots Guard has none.
Their different divisions perform similar ceremonial duties at Buckingham Palace. But they have other actual roles as well, suited to their specialization.
When peeling your boiled eggs, you can see a hidden layer under the shell.
These two membranes, an inner and outer one, are made from the same stuff as your hair, keratin. It protects the inside from bacteria and stops liquids from escaping.
You use [music] X in your text, which represents a kiss. It's been used this way for a very long time. Its original purpose dates back to the Middle Ages where it was a representation of a person's faith, honesty, and sincerity.
Those that would sign off with an X would kiss it after signing as a display of a sworn oath.
The X's meaning later changed to represent the action of kissing. And the first document showing this was a letter dating back to 1763 written by a naturalist Gilbert White [music] who sent it to his wife.
William Shakespeare is a name familiar to everyone. However, we don't know whether this was the actual way his name was spelled, and neither did he.
He signed 80 different variations of his name spelling on all his works.
Historians haven't a clue which the correct spelling is. The version that we know of was only used on two of his plays.
Different forms of alarm clocks were invented as far back as 348 B.CE TE with many versions throughout the world, all with complicated mechanics. Unaffordable to mostly everyone, they didn't catch on. Alternate methods to wake up in the morning started to be used in the 1800s.
One process involving knocker uppers was common in some countries. A person visited your house every morning to knock on your door four times.
Inventor Antoine Redier felt that he should be woken only when he felt it necessary. So in 1847, he invented the first adjustable alarm clock.
Tennis balls in Wimbledon must be kept at a perfect temperature to ensure they bounce at a consistent level. They're stored at 68° F, so they're cold enough that the molecules inside the ball shrink, ensuring they bounce lower.
Then they're continuously swapped throughout a match as they expand by being hit too much, becoming too bouncy.
Wimbledon goes through 50,000 tennis balls each year.
You enjoy the smell of a freshly mowed lawn as you associate it with the weekends and summer. But that smell is a sign of stress made by the grass. Grass evolved to emit various elements when being eaten by bugs. This signal attracts predator insects to remove them. But unfortunately for the grass, there's nothing large enough to deter a lawn mower.
There is no oxygen inside your packet of chips. If there was, it would influence the combination of molecules forming inside, spoiling the chips faster. The packets are instead filled with nitrogen, which pushes oxygen out, and this extends the shelf life and quality of your chips.
You're traveling by plane overnight and just can't get to sleep. And the first night in a hotel wasn't great, regardless of how comfy the bed was.
This is because of a human evolutionary trait called the first night effect.
When you sleep in a different place than your home, the left side of the brain responds to more sounds while you're asleep. It continues to analyze your surroundings without you realizing, acting as though it's on a night watch and keeping you alert for any potential dangers.
Most animals have this trait, although it's a lot more subtle in humans.
But it's still effective enough to make sure you get your peanuts.
Before playing basketball with hoops, you would have instead been playing with peach baskets. When the game was invented in 1891, a peach basket was used with the bottom of it cut off. But it only took 15 years for players to grow tired of constantly collecting the jammed balls and to remove the basket altogether.
When you click your fingers, the snapping sound isn't from the physical click of finger and thumb. The noise actually comes from the finger hitting the palm.
The instant film for the first Polaroid cameras didn't have their own coating after taking a photo. To develop it, you applied it yourself. Waiting for it to dry took a long time. So, shaking it sped up the process. Then, from the 1970s, the film provided everything required for the photo to develop, making the popular craze of shaking Polaroids pointless.
Shaking the photo can cause the ink to wave or blur before drying properly. So, you shouldn't actually shake it like a Polaroid picture, and just wait patiently instead.
Bug spray doesn't repel all bugs, especially the worst of them all, mosquitoes. It does cover the scent of carbon dioxide, [music] which is what attracts mosquitoes, but the spray only protects you for a short distance.
Mosquitoes can also track carbon dioxide over long distances. They will continue to stalk you until they find a gap in your invisible bug shield.
A great alternative is lavender, which contains linolu.
This fragrance completely overloads the mosquito's senses, making it unable to track you.
The half belt on the back of some jackets appear like a fashion accessory.
It was initially designed that way for larger jackets as they could also be used as a blanket to wrap around oneself.
The belt's position helps hold the material together so it's easier to walk with whilst keeping you warm.
Ketchup wasn't originally intended to be your favorite condiment. In 1834, a physician John Cook sold ketchup as a cure for indigestion.
It was an immediate hit and today 10 billion ounces are purchased annually in the USA, although not as the intended medicine.
Thomas Edison made over 1,000 inventions, and one in particular, the light bulb, is most famously linked to him. However, [music] he didn't actually invent it. Warren Delaroo, a British chemist, had solved this scientific challenge 40 years earlier. There were also 20 other inventors who made alternate versions before Edison did.
But earlier varieties relied on cotton thread and only lasted up to 14 hours.
Edison in 1880 used a carbonized bamboo thread instead and his worked up to,200 hours. [music] It became the most commercially viable light bulb and today's ones are similarly shaped to Edison's original.
The first treadmill was used in England in 1818. It was a large wooden cylinder with a handrail, although it wasn't used to keep fit. Convicted criminals would be forced to use these for up to 10 hours per day as a punishment.
The energy output potential was realized and soon it was built to work with water pumps and grain grinders. It was so effective that it was used in all prisons throughout the country. But in 1902 it was decided that it was too harsh and stopped. And now this cruel punishment is mainly found in gyms.
During the 1940s there was a shortage of cocoa and it was important to find a solution to this problem. A production company found a way by mixing only a small amount of cocoa with hazelnuts and milk [music] and the original Nutella was created.
It started out as a loaf spread like a stick of butter. [music] It then transformed into a creamier version inside a jar in 1951, but it wasn't until 1964 that it was given its famous name.
Your passport might be a dark shade [music] of either green, blue, or red.
The darker color not only makes them appear more official, but is intended so that through its journeys, the dirt that's collected is more easily hidden.
Wasabi was first used back [music] in the 8th century. It wasn't meant as a spicy condiment as it's served with sushi today. Initially, [music] it was used for its antimicrobial properties that help avoid the harmful reactions to fish with sushi that's a bit too old.
Pockets are usually on the left side of shirts because most [music] people are right-handed. Is this a myth or a fact?
This is actually true. Many products favor the righties. Left-handed people will relate to this on so many levels.
Let's say public transport.
Have you ever noticed that the scanner at stations is typically on the right side? Household equipment and devices are one more example. Scissors, [music] tweezers, bottle openers, and many other kitchen and household appliances are designed with right-handed people in mind.
The same goes for shirt pockets. While some people use both hands equally and others change their hand preference between tasks, overall most people are right-handed.
A study has revealed that 75% to 90% of the world's population are right-handed [music] and 10% are left-handed. This means it's more convenient for most people to have pockets on the left side than on the right side of their garments.
Try it out for yourself. Your elbow kind of folds when you try to reach into the pocket on the right side. [music] Whereas on the left side, your elbow makes an arc shape, which makes it easier to put things inside the pocket and take them out.
Eating more protein leads to having bigger muscles. What do you think about this bodybuilders? Myth or fact?
This is a myth. It's true that eating protein is essential for building bigger muscles. I mean, [music] proteins are building blocks of your body. And yet eating more than you need is unnecessary.
Everyone should drink eight glasses of water a day. Do you think this is a myth or a fact?
This is a myth. So don't blame yourself for drinking less water than recommended. Eight glasses are not a magic number. Hydration needs differ from one person to another.
How much water you should drink every day depends on your activity and exercise level. The temperature of the place where you live affects this number, too. If you live in a hot area, you sweat more and need to drink more water. Soup, coffee, tea, fruits, and other things you eat daily also contain water.
Carrots are high in sugar, so you should avoid eating them. If this is true, we should warn bunnies. Any guesses? Fact or myth? It's a myth. Carrots are about 85% water. One lb of cooked carrots only contains 3 teaspoon of sugar. [music] Compared to the amount of sugar in desserts, this is nothing. Plus, carrots are high in phytochemicals and eating them can help lower blood sugar.
Medieval people believed in flat earth.
Is this a myth or a fact? Obviously, flat earth is a myth. But so is the history built around this myth. You can't say that at those times [music] the whole world was skeptical about Earth's spherical shape. Even everyday visible things proved that. For example, medieval people could see that [music] the twilight glow during sunrise and sunset formed an arc over the horizon.
Vikings wore horned helmets. Is this [music] a myth or fact?
The well-known image of a Viking warrior is almost always [music] completed with a horned helmet. But in reality, there are no horns. There's no evidence that Viking helmets were horned.
Detox juices cleanse your body. Is this a fact or myth?
It's a myth. Detoxification doesn't work that way. Your internal organs are responsible for the process of cleansing the spleen, liver, kidneys, especially the liver.
Your body is always in a natural state of cleansing itself. [music] A person doesn't need to drink juices for detoxification.
Nuts are junk food. Any thoughts? Myth or fact?
You're right. This is a myth. Nuts are full of healthy fats. They're good for your heart and other organs.
The average American throws away about 82 lb of textile waste per year. Is this a fact or myth? [music] Fact. Imagine all that waste. When someone throws their clothes away, they don't disappear into thin air. These items most likely reach landfills as their final destination.
Donating clothes and selling them in secondhand stores are a much better option. Now, you've probably heard about life-saving laundry tricks that are said to make your clothes super clean and as good as they were on day one. What if those laundry tips are actually myths? I got three of them lined up for you.
Shirts should be buttoned when you put them in the laundry. Is it true or not?
This is a myth. You'd better keep zippers closed to keep their teeth from catching the fabric of other clothes.
But fastening the buttons of a shirt can expand the button net and the button hole. In the long term, buttons will start slipping out of place.
Washing clothes in hot water is the most effective way to clean them. Is this a myth or fact? That's another laundry myth. You want to rid your clothes of germs. Yet, hot water alone won't be enough for this. Nowadays, many detergents [music] can clean clothes in cold or warm water.
You should remove stains from the face of the fabric. Is it true?
Most people apply water and soap to the stain, starting from the front side of the fabric, [music] but that's not the best option. A much better way is to start from the back. The stain can go deeper if you treat it from the front.
Try to make the stain move up to the surface rather [music] than push it inside.
Listening to music is an effective tool for learning languages. [music] Is it a myth or fact?
It's a fact. Scientists say listening to a song and humming along can help you learn a language. Most people struggle to learn grammar. Yet, in our daily lives, we don't always follow grammar rules. [music] Songs can help you pick up informal expressions.
Scientists have also concluded that music can help you remember new words and add them to your vocabulary. [music] Let me give you an example. It's from your first year at school. Yep, the alphabet song.
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Either way, you might want to know these facts and myths about sleep.
The longest someone went without sleep was 11 days. [music] Do you think this is possible or is it an urban legend?
This is a fact. [music] Randy Gardner set the record for the longest amount of time a person went without sleep. It was an experiment carried [music] out by Stanford sleep researcher Dr. William C.
Demond. The doctor recorded and monitored Randy [music] Gardner's sleep activity. Gardner managed to stay awake for 11 days and 25 minutes.
Your body eventually gets used to getting less sleep. Myth or fact? It's a myth. There are many studies proving that your body and especially your [music] brain can't get used to sleeping less. Have you noticed that after a few nights of insufficient sleep, you begin [music] to feel groggier during the day?
That's your body trying to adjust to not getting enough rest. Long-term sleep deprivation affects your daytime performance, [music] focus, and decision-m.
Many grown-ups need five or fewer hours of sleep. Can it be [music] true? Well, this one's easy. It's a myth. Experts from the National Sleep Foundation recommend [music] that the average adult sleeps 7 to 9 hours per night. Some people have a genetic mutation thanks to which they [music] wake up refreshed after a short night's sleep, but such people are an exception. 1 in [music] 4 million.
The ability to fall asleep in any place and at any time means you're a good sleeper. [music] What do you think? Myth or fact?
It's a myth. A good sleeper gets a proper amount of sleep and has a regular sleep schedule.
Cats spend twothirds of their life asleep. Do you believe that? This will [music] probably come as no surprise.
It's a fact. How many of the facts and myths did you guess correctly?
Hey, have you ever been vibing out in your room [music] listening to some of your favorite songs, admiring the subwoofer of your speaker as it delivers magnificence to your eardrums? We all have. But have you ever asked yourself why that same speaker along with other speakers across the globe is almost always black? Some of you are probably screaming at your screen right now about your speaker being green, red, or any other color found in the rainbow. Number one, I said almost always. And number two, if you look closely at the gorgeous design of your brightly colored music player, you'll often find that the speaker beneath it is still colored black. One possible explanation for this is that the original technology of speakers had a diaphragm with black particles on it. So as soon as a sound is amplified, it sends a charge through the diaphragm and these black particles are driven upwards. The carbon particles bouncing and touching the upper membrane of the diaphragm are responsible for creating some of the distinct sounds from our speakers that we all love so much. Speaker manufacturers must have gotten tired of their products changing color with prolonged use, combined with these black particles settling on the upper membrane of the diaphragm. [music] So, their logical solution was to color most speakers black.
Another more practical belief as to why speakers are mostly colored black is that it's a [music] hue that easily matches up with many types of decor.
Walls, furniture, and clothes all often look quite well when combined with this color, which is why it's so prevalent everywhere you go. Listening to music has repeatedly scored in the top 10 pastimes in the US based on research.
Nowadays, [music] you find sound speakers everywhere in your television, laptop, and your phone. You can't escape them. But let's [music] take a look at how they started off. Their origins are in radio and telephone technology. The first form of [music] a speaker was developed by Johan Philip Rice in 1861.
The German was a self-taught inventor and installed the speaker on his telephone.
It was just about able to reproduce clear [music] tones, but it could also replicate muffled speech after a few revisions.
>> Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, decided to try and produce an improved version of Rice's speaker. Essentially, Bell and other inventors wanted to make an electronamic speaker. By 1877, it was still yet to exist. But due to the desire of inventors worldwide to change this, research confirmed that it was extremely possible to make one. In particular, the work of Wernern von Seammens, who came up with the idea of an electromagnetic coil-driven speaker, was a driving force in arriving at this conclusion.
Why are there magnets in speakers?
[music] You might ask. Every speaker nowadays has an electric current, something the inventors we're discussing would [music] never have taken for granted at any point in their lives. When this electric current is changing, it produces a magnetic field. To make [music] the panel of the speaker move, magnets are used to create an opposing magnetic field which creates vibrations. These vibrations are the sound we end up hearing. The bigger the magnet, the louder the speaker will be. Another inventor by the name of Thomas Edison from the US had filed a British patent for a system using compressed air for an amplifying mechanism. The first commercial electric loudspeaker saw the light of day only in 1924. [music] The sound quality produced by this speaker was good enough for motion [music] pictures. It took nearly 20 years for the next groundbreaking development in the world of loudspeakers. This came with [music] the arrival of the duplex driver in 1943. It offered better clarity and coherence at high volumes, which was important in movie theaters. Fittingly, it was nicknamed the voice of the theater. The duplex driver was [music] immediately tested by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and instantly made its film house industry standard in 1955.
Until now, this loudspeaker design is still used.
Indeed, the film industry does seem to put a lot of effort into its sound, and so do the theaters we watch them in. You may have noticed that these buildings [music] often have thick curtains on the walls. These are soundproof or acoustic curtains, and both are much thicker than regular curtains. They will either consist of heavier fabrics that are tightly woven or have better quality linings. This means that these curtains will absorb sound [music] and reduce the acoustic reflection off the ceiling, windows, and flat walls of the room.
[music] This ultimately creates a much better sonic experience. The carpet floors are so thick in theaters for the same reason. [music] It helps to trap sound by providing insulation. From a practical standpoint, this carpet is also set up [music] to prevent the sound of footsteps during film screenings.
This concept of trapping sound is also the reason why putting a phone inside a cup will make the phone speaker seem louder. Any speaker sitting or suspended in an open space projects its sound in all directions. As the speaker vibrates to create sound waves, an equal amount of energy leaves from both the front and the back. By placing a speaker in some form of enclosure, we can redirect some of the energy that comes from the back of the speaker and project it forwards.
By putting the speaker in a cup, you're directing the sound more efficiently. It travels only one way, making it seem louder than what you'd hear when you take it out of the cup. Speaking of phones and speakers, ever wonder why your mobile device makes your speaker produce a buzzing noise? [music] This can occur when the two gadgets are near one another and your mobile is trying to send and receive data. The transfer of information produces electromagnetic disturbances in the medium around the speakers. It creates noise in the audio and as a result, you can hear the buzzing sound coming from the speaker. A simple way to protect the amazing vibe your speaker is creating for you from this irritating buzzing [music] noise is just to move your phone away from your speaker or vice versa. This will eliminate what is officially known as electromagnetic interference.
Research across America shows that on average 74% of people own two or more pairs of headphones. 46% of them mentioned they listen to their headphones for more than 2 hours per day. Some choose the headphones by their looks, others [music] by the sound quality. In either case, finding the right pair is important since a lot of people are willing to spend over $100 on it. Headphones [music] have become a true fashion accessory. That's why well-known figures are trying to make an impact in the headphone industry like it's the fashion industry. Music mogul Dr. Dre and Jimmy Ivine came up with the idea for the now world famous Beats by Dread [music] Headphones brand. They were walking along the Pacific Ocean one day in 2006, discussing a sneaker deal as they had an offer on the table from a major brand [music] in that arena. After some discussions, they decided they wanted to do something they were more passionate about and landed [music] on headphones. The duo's idea turned into a brand that was purchased by Apple in 2014 [music] for $3 billion. It was the largest deal in Apple's history, and [music] Beats by Dre controlled 70% of the headphone market at the time of signing. The move allowed Apple to take over the headphone [music] space. The release of their popular wireless AirPods headphones in 2016 was another reason it happened. [music] But how do these popular wireless headphones that many of us own actually work? [music] These headphones rely on internal batteries to have enough power to remain wireless. Most often they have conveniently built-in rechargeable batteries, but sometimes they keep going thanks to standard double A or AAA batteries. They receive wirelessly transmitted signals from their paired audio sources, [music] be it your phone or laptop. These signals are encoded by the [music] source device and transmitted most commonly via radio frequencies or infrared carriers. The headphones receive the signal and decode it to audio. And just like that, it's [music] music to your ears.
Okay, I know it's kind of cold to the touch, especially on a freezing winter's day, but did you know that brass door knobs actually serve a purpose apart from looking classy and shiny? Since it's a copper alloy, brass has antimicrobial properties. That means it can help get rid of harmful germs and bacteria, sometimes in up to 2 hours. In hightra areas, that's all the more useful. But since brass is much costier than other metals like nickel and steel, you barely see these types of doorork knobs anymore nowadays. Speaking of lovely multi-purpose items, most screwdrivers have a tiny little secret of their own. They can sometimes be slid through a wrench [music] so that they can be used to create more torque when twisting. Not to mention the uses when it comes to [music] bolts in hard-to-reach places.
There's a reason why buttons on women's shirts are for the left-handed, and it has nothing to do with fashion. This practice dates back to the times when chambermaids were helping ladies dress themselves, and [music] it was easier for them to perform their job with this orientation. Having the buttons placed as such indicated a sign of wealth.
[music] So, it's easy to imagine why the practice carried on, even though most people dress themselves [music] nowadays. Next time you receive a package in your mail, take a look at your box cutter. If it [music] features some diagonal lines on the blade, you're in for a little design perk. Turns out that these are blades that snap off.
Continuously cutting cardboard can dull the sharp edge of the blade. To help prevent the need to buy a brand new box cutter, [music] the top segment along the next line can be broken off to reach a new sharp edge. To do [music] this, check out the small hole at the base of the tool, sometimes called the blade snapper. The people that first came up with this brilliant invention were [music] engineers inspired by the way chocolate bars are segmented. Hold on a minute. Don't throw away the cardboard package just yet. Most likely, you'll have some silica gel packets somewhere at the bottom of the box. Since this gel is basically a drying tool, it gathers up the moisture out of its environment, so you can store these packets for further occasions. Whether you'll need to dry out your phone or some other electrical object, you can place them in a container next to the silica gel to reduce [music] the damage. You don't have to be a mechanic to know when a standard car tire needs replacing since [music] they come equipped with a neat indicator. Take a closer look and you'll see that treads within the tire are a bunch of rubber notches. [music] When the treads are evened out with the perpendicular bars, it's a sign you need to book an appointment with your local car service. Since most likely the tires have lost most of their traction and may not be safe for driving any longer. The upper corners of a car windshield feature textured black dots melted into the glass edges. This neat add-on isn't there for design purposes. It's called frit glazing, which means that a special type of ceramic paint is added to the window for protecting its sealant from UV rays. It also conceals and creates a coarser surface for the adhesive used to set the window in place. Whenever you're up for a drive, check out if there's a small tab under your car's rear view mirror. Bet you didn't know it's there to help switch the mirror from daytime to nighttime views. It uses a prismatic glass technology to blur the reflection and reduce the glare of headlights behind you in traffic. People came up with these manually tilted mirrors in the 1930s, but they became standard somewhere in the 1970s.
While you're in the car, check out the headrests, as you most likely don't know that they carry a little disguised purpose. Of course, they're adjustable to accommodate passengers of any height so that they get the proper support for their heads and necks. The hidden feature is that they are detachable and come with two very solid metal bars.
Should you ever find yourself stuck in a car and need to make a fast getaway, these bars come in handy to crack out the car windows. So, [music] you're out for a drive and you're suddenly out of gas. What I'm about to describe sounds more like a meme than an actual situation bound to happen. But what if you're in such a hurry that you accidentally [music] drive off with the gas nozzle still in the tank? Well, the nozzles have been designed to prevent any hazards from happening. Rest assured, they feature a breakaway device that will allow the hose to separate when [music] taken out with enough force.
Initially designed.
The subject of bathroom countertop items, toothbrushes come with a neat add-on hidden in the bristle patterns.
[music] Apart from making the toothbrush look cooler, they also do come with a practical purpose. Most toothbrushes come with a pattern of blue bristles intertwined with white ones. The blue dye is meant to fade out, signaling the time when you need to replace your toothbrush.
Dentists say that toothbrushes should be replaced every 3 to 4 months, but it does serve as a great reminder in case you forget. Still love playing with Lego? Don't judge. Hey, it's a great hobby for all ages. Notice there's a hole on top of the Lego heads. Behold, you're looking at a safety feature that the people at LEGO [music] designed to prevent choking hazards. The most dangerous issue should a person swallow any of these pieces is the blocking of the airways. Designing a hole inside the Lego head helps the air to flow freely through the piece [music] until it can be removed safely.
We're now used to all sorts of modern light bulbs. [music] Some tubular, some shaped like diamonds, and some even twisted altogether. Historically, light bulbs were round and the initial shape served a purpose in itself. It was mainly connected to the fact [music] that glass bulbs were hand blown which gave them the round shape to begin with.
The hidden practical reason was that the light bulb filament needed to be at the same distance from every surface [music] of the glass sphere. The easiest way to achieve this was to make the glass in the shape of a globe.
Want to pour yourself a drink before we begin? Just make sure not to grab the glass with your palm. Yep, that's right.
The glass has a stem for a reason.
Touching the glass bowl with your hands will alter the drink's temperature and it will get warmer much sooner. While we're in the kitchen, let's check out your fridge. Most of those come with designated areas in the door shelves for eggs, but this may not be the best solution for storing them. The temperature in the door shelves tends to be a bit higher than in the fridge itself. So, it's not the best place to store delicate types of food like eggs or dairy. Make sure to remember that after your next trip to the supermarket.
Also, while we're still browsing items in the fridge, did you know that waiting for food to cool down before refrigerating it may be bad for it?
Keeping food at room temperature for more than 2 hours can increase its chances of going bad. So, pop it in as soon as possible. Just make sure to divide your food into smaller batches to help it cool down quicker. What's that in your fridge I just saw? Chocolate.
Well, that's a big no no. [music] Regardless of the season, remember to never store chocolate in the fridge. The lower temperatures inside can cause the chocolate flavor to dull. [music] Also, who wants to eat rock hard chocolate anyway?
When it [music] comes to breakfast, next time you boil an egg, try putting a teaspoon of baking soda into the water when boiling. The eggshells will peel off way easier.
Another tip is to crack the egg on one end and run it under the tap. The water stream will help peel off the shell faster and with way less of a mess.
Fan of smoothies? Bet you didn't know there's actually a correct way to load up your blender. Start with the liquids, then pile up the solids as you go. The motion created by the movement of the liquids will ensure a smooth, clump-free, delicious breakfast or snack. After that, you can clean it by simply adding some dishwashing soap and some water and letting it blend away. No need to add it to the dishwasher anymore since the full cycle of the dishwasher can damage the metal plates on the blender. If you're ever in the mood for a peanut butter sandwich, but the peanut butter is all split with the oils on top, remember there's a correct way to store it. Placing the peanut butter jar upside down in your cupboard will ensure the oils are spread out evenly.
Love a good steak but never get a perfect consistency? You're probably digging in too soon. You have to let the meat rest after cooking for at least 10 minutes before you start cutting it.
Using the right knife will also give you better results. A sharp knife will ensure you don't lose any of those lovely meat juices.
It's pasta night. Ever wondered why there's a hole in the middle of the spaghetti spoon? Turns out you can use that hole to check how much pasta to cook per person. Now you know exactly how much of it to boil for that special marinara sauce of yours. When using non-stick pans, never use metal utensils. Go for wooden [music] or plastic ones instead. The metal will be way too rough on the surface of your pans and can actually damage the non-adherent surface. Are you a leftovers for dinner type of person?
Aren't we all? Quick tip for reheating your dinner in the microwave. Try spreading the food around the edges of the plate. Microwaves are indeed designed to heat food as evenly as possible, but not if the food is piled up.
Ever tried to take out a single Tic Tac from the tiny container? Just turn the box on its side. There's a cleverly designed slot on the plastic top precisely for that. No more shaking [music] the Tic Tac box like a maniac.
If you're up for some music but don't have a speaker around, don't worry.
Placing your phone in a cup or bowl will amplify the sound and make your experience so much better. In a hurry and your phone is running out of battery? There's a simple way to reduce the charging time. Simply set the phone to airplane mode. You'll see it'll charge up to 100% in no time. We all keep our phones in all sorts of places, our pockets, bags, under our pillows.
[music] Hence, a lot of fuzz or lint can get stuck in the charging port. For safety reasons, turn the phone off before cleaning it. [music] You can use specifically designed tools for cleaning the charging ports, speakers, or microphone. Just be sure to be gentle.
Nice desk you got there. Did you know that those little legs on the back of the keyboard are actually there to help you see the keys better? However, if you can type without having to look at the keyboard, don't use them to lift the keyboard up. This position can damage your [music] wrists when using for a long period of time.
If you like to keep your things organized and prefer to use sticky notes, just make sure to remove them from the notes cube from side to side to prevent curling.
We all feel a little overwhelmed when it comes to storage, especially linens. One easy way to make sure you'll never get mixed sheets is to store each set in the matching pillowcase. [music] Not only will you get easy access to each set, but it's way nicer to look at on the shelves.
When it comes to storing clothing, people use wooden hangers for more than just aesthetic [music] reasons. They may be bigger and heavier than plastic ones, but they also help repel moths. Keep that in mind, more so when storing winter clothes.
Were you ever curious about that one [music] extra loophole in your running shoes? That one just next to your ankles? Well, turns out it's there for a reason. The tighter the laces on [music] your shoes, the less likely you are to get blisters. Always fit your shoes correctly [music] and use that extra loop in the shoes if needed before you go for a run.
Your dress shirts have a tiny secret, too. [music] On the inside of the shirt, right between the shoulders, there's a tiny loop that you can use to hang the garment whenever you don't have a hanger lying around.
Nothing can ruin a good vacation more than unorganized baggage. To make sure you never have to stuff your luggage with a huge pile of random clothes, instead of folding, try rolling your stuff and placing it neatly in the baggage. This way, you save a lot of space. You have easy access to everything you need, and your clothes will be less wrinkled.
Not to be intrusive, but there's a bunch of things I'd like to show you in the bathroom as well.
Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds each [music] time to get rid of all the germs. To save the effort, open and close the tap with your wrist if possible. There you go. Squeaky clean hands for a longer period of time.
Always brush your hair from the bottom if [music] you want to get rid of any knots. Brushing your hair from the top will only cause more damage.
When it's time to wash your hair, be sure to concentrate the shampoo on the scalp. Be careful though, never to apply the shampoo directly to your head.
Lather it a bit with some water between your [music] hands before you start massaging it in.
You can skip shampooing the lengths of your hair unless they're really dirty.
The foam that goes down from your scalp is sufficient to clean that portion.
Take good care of your lofah as well.
Leaving it in a moist, warm shower can increase its chances of gathering all sorts of nasty bacteria. Either throw it in with your laundry once a week or let it soak in a solution with diluted bleach.
We're sure you always moisturize after your shower, but there's a correct way to do that, too. Don't add too much cream on your face. And make sure to tap, not [music] rub it in. Your skin will thank you for it.
You don't have to be a dentist to know how important flossing is. Next time, try tying your floss in a knot. With the added tension and grip, your [music] teeth will be cleaner in no time.
