On September 1, 1939, 56 Polish postal workers in Danzig's post office, who had secretly hidden weapons, mounted a 15-hour defense against German SS troops during the first day of World War II, ultimately being executed as illegal combatants for defending their country's building, illustrating how ordinary citizens can become heroes in pivotal historical moments and how history often overlooks such stories.

They were postal workers who had hidden weapons in case this moment came. When SS troops attacked at dawn, they expected a quick takeover. Instead, they walked into a defense that lasted 15 hours. The Poles repelled the first assault, then a second, then a third backed by armored cars and artillery.
