This video examines the 'Au Pair Affair' double murder trial, where Brendan Banfield, an IRS agent, and his secret girlfriend Juliana conspired to kill his wife Christine and a stranger Joseph Ryan by luring them into their Fairfax County home through a fake FetLife profile, staging a break-in as a cover for the murders; the case demonstrates how online dating platforms can be exploited for criminal purposes and how digital evidence (online messages, communications) can be crucial in proving premeditated crimes, with the jury finding Brendan guilty of aggravated murder and the defense filing a last-minute motion to overturn the verdict.

The Au Pair Affair: A Twisted Plot of Ultimate BetrayalAdded:
Just take some deep breaths. All right.
You need to sit down somewhere.
>> Where's my daughter?
>> Were you hit with anything? A knife?
Anything?
>> No, I took I took the knife. I took the knife from him.
>> Okay. All right. So, you're not hurt anywhere. Is that not your blood?
Correct.
>> I I think it's >> All right. You want to slip this jacket off for me so we can evaluate you real quick? I'm going have >> Yes, sir. My name is D. I'm one of the doctors here. Um, your wife has died.
Those were tears of joy coming from Mr. Brendan, Mr. Banfield. Okay. And now he wants the judge to just kind of forget about the whole thing. Okay, I watched Top Gun earlier today.
Okay, maybe next video it'll be Goose, but today it's Maverick. Okay, there we go. See y'all. Today we are taking a memory lane, I guess you could say, in preparation for the sentencing of Brendan Banfield. Now you might be like, "Oh, who's the Brendan? Who's the Bambfields? I already forgot." Well, buckle up cuz I'm going to tell you. So go on and get your true crime blankie, get your sib from the cup, get the Jesus, get the Rosco, and let's get into who all this hot mess is. So Brendan Banfield's going to be sentenced on Friday, May 8th. But with a new motion in play, there will be more than just his mandatory sentencing taking place.
So, let's take a walk down memory lane so we're on the same page ahead of sentencing. So, today we're back in Fairfax County, Virginia, looking at a case that's been called the Opair Affair double murder trial. Now, before we jump into those updates, let's go ahead and just all get on the same page about what the case is about, the verdict, all that, and some of the cringiest parts of it. This case centers on Brendan Banfield, a federal employee and husband, and the violent deaths of his wife, Christine, and a man named Joseph Ryan, inside the Banfield's Northern Virginia home. But prosecutors said this wasn't just some random home invasion.
Oh no. They argued that it was a murder plot that had been in the works for months. And guess what? They were right.
Now, on the screen, you're going to see a few people here or four people. So, you're going to have Brendan, who's like the mastermind behind this. Juliana, the co-conspirator. This is the Opair. Now, victim number one was Christine. This was Brendan's wife, Juliana's boss. And then Joseph, victim number two. This was the other victim that was lured to the house. He and Christine are total strangers. They never talked. Now, a little bit about Brendan and Christine.
So, Brendan was law enforcement. He was an agent for the IRS. And he maintained this very, you know, doing image of the husband, the father, all the things.
Okay. Now, Christine, registered nurse, dedicated wife and mother, very active in their community. Now, on the outside, they appeared to be like a normal, happy, family oriented family. However, that was far from the case, at least on Brendan's side. And they brought a third person in, an Opair, Juliana, to, you know, live with them, take help take care of the kid, etc., etc., and it ended in absolute devastation. So, let's talk for a minute about Juliana. So, she was Brendan Bamfeld's secret girlfriend, and according to prosecutors, his partner in a plot that brought a stranger into the house. that stranger with Joseph Ryan and left both Joseph and Christine dead. Now, she would later take a plea deal for manslaughter, admitted to her role, testified against Brendon, the whole nine yards. She got 10 years in prison. Now, according to the state, Brendan was having an affair with Juliana. Now, together, they allegedly built this elaborate plan.
They lured a stranger into the home under a fake persona on the website Fet Life. This is like a fetish kind of a thing. They made this whole character up for Christine that she liked, really rough. You know what? And they built this very elaborate plan, like I said.
Now, what they ended up doing, though, is staging what would look like a chaotic breakin, and they would use that setup as a cover to kill Christine. Now, investigators would say the online messages, the roleplay, the planning, all pointed to something deliberate, not some splitsecond decision. Now, on the morning of these murders, Joseph Ryan came to the house believing he's meeting a woman for a consensual encounter off of this website, Fetlife. Well, Brennan and Juliana, they had been pretending to be Christine on that site. So, instead, he walked into a deadly situation. Now, by the end of this encounter, both he and Christine would be dead, and a child who was inside that home while all of this unfolded would ultimately be left without two parents. Let's take a quick look at Juliana moments after this took place when she called the authorities to come to the house.
this car strange car and I call her why why the car is here.
>> I don't know who it is but it was it was a strange white male so I couldn't talk to her. Then I called Brandon her her her husband.
>> Okay.
>> And then he said wait for me I'll go there. Don't get inside.
And then he came back here and we went inside and then we went upstairs and then I went to see what's going on and I heard who is the virus. I had no it's pranking her. I don't know >> what it's pranking her. got heard like I don't know what was that and Brennon said police drop the knife drop the knife cuz he had a knife and then he he said drop the gun to Brenn and they were yelling I couldn't understand super fast >> now here's the thing first of all of course Brendan would be at a McDonald's right and that was the plan all along he had been setting this up he went to McDonald's where he had been going for I forget how many weeks he had started doing this routine so it wouldn't look abnormal you do have to give a couple of points for that. So, this is all planned out, right? She shows up back up at the house. They know this plan's going to go off. It doesn't even make sense. Why would you call him to say there's a strange car here? None of it makes sense. Okay. Now, also with Juliana, if you watch the trial along with me, we watched on the podcast channel together, link down below, she had zero emotion on the stand. She just spoke about these crimes with zero affect. Right. So, seeing her here where she's shaking and doing all this, I'm just like, uh-huh.
Yeah. Right. she has already moved into his bedroom not long after this whole situation kind of the the dust settled if you will. Now, another thing to bring up with her is the fact that, you know, she kind of stood by him a little bit and was, you know, t going to she was going to be taking some of the blame for him, but clearly that would shift. Now, from the beginning, Brandon would claim, hey, I'm the victim of a home invasion.
But very quickly, detectives would notice that the physical evidence and the digital evidence, it didn't match that story. Now, the prosecution would highlight things like messages leading up to that night, the way the scene was arranged, and the Opair's account of the planning. At trials, jurors heard from the Opair herself, who had already taken the plea deal that we mentioned earlier in exchange for her testimony. Now, they would also hear from investigators, forensic experts. They would see the online trail that prosecutors said tied the planning straight back to Brendan.
Now, the defense tried to push back on her credibility and argued that the situation wasn't what the state claimed.
But in the end, the jury did not accept that. And even Brynden himself would have to take the stand and try and talk his way out of it. Okay, let's take a few minutes and review some of the highlights here. And we're going to hear from Juliana first. Now, the first one, y'all, I just want to put out when she enters. Watch Brendan's eyes here. Okay, he's just like, "Baby, oh baby, I remember that strut. Still love you, babe. That's my woman. I'll do anything for you, baby.
I'll do anything, baby. I'll even serve some time for you. I love you. I love you, baby. We're supposed to be back in Brazil together.
>> Lazy.
>> Do you recall when he said those things?
>> When?
>> Yes.
>> Well, many times during our conversation when she came up.
And um did he ever talk to you about um anything else about his relationship?
Did he ever talk about getting a divorce with her?
>> No.
He basically said divorce was not an option.
>> Let me tell you what, Brendan stayed right in that little It's interesting to see a right-handed person right like that cuz that's usually how like I'm left-handed and do that. He couldn't write enough, y'all. It was like he was getting paid for it. It was probably like a nervous reaction or something, but you heard here from Juliana of Yeah, divorce wasn't an option for Brendan.
Now, Brendan was to me basically a serial cheater, right? She wasn't the first rodeo that he had. Okay, so this was a thing and he wanted to get rid of his wife so that he could live his life.
And my guess is that once that was all settled and Juliana was off in the big house, he'd be on to the next woman.
>> Joe Ryan was selected.
Who chose Joe?
>> Brennan.
>> And did he say why he picked Joe after interacting with him on Fet Life? It was mostly because he made Brennan feel confident enough that he would be the person to to play the role they needed the person to play, which means being aggressive and hold her down and come over to the house and bring stuff and all that. Yeah. So, as you heard again from her, this was about how they selected Joseph Ryan to come over to the house. They talked to several guys on there and they were trying to set up a scene of finding somebody who would be okay coming to the house without having met, without any kind of situation of safeguards and engaging in a consensual, nonconsensual scene. Okay. The things that they were remember they're pretending to be Christine on these on this website on this profile. The things that they were saying they were into in hopes of getting someone to do them to Christine were so vile and so horrible. I cannot even imagine how somebody could conjure these things up and want to do them to somebody they loved in addition to being the mother of their children. Okay, I mean this is it blows my mind the things that they had lined up for her. He hated this woman. And I personally think that Juliana was working him over. I think she just was using him as a means to an end. I think they were two peas in a pod. Okay, they were both using each other, but I do think he probably caught more feelings for her than vice versa.
And they maybe pass that torch off at different times. But regardless, that's what they're referencing. Let's watch another clip of Juliana on the stand spilling the tea. Brennan looks at me and just in a way for me like to um to hang up the call.
>> Did he tell you? Did he say Juliana hang up the call?
>> No, he did not.
>> How did he communicate to you?
>> A gesture.
>> And what gesture did he make?
>> This.
>> And so what did you do after he made that gesture? I hung up the phone the the the phone call.
>> Now, she's describing when she got on the phone with 911 and he's making her hang the phone up. Now, remember the scene that's playing out here is Christine's just in bed, right? And some stranger comes in and starts assaulting her and then all of a sudden Brendan and Julian are there and Christine's like, "He's got a knife and doing this and that." And I believe it was Brendan shot him first and then takes the knife and then kills her. So her last moments of life are this whole thing of mass confusion, betrayal, obviously physical harm, spiritual harm, I would say. So this was the last moment that he left her in life with. And Juliana is just along for the ride, like ready to move on into her bedroom.
>> Where in her body was he stabbing her?
>> Her neck.
>> And were you able to see whether or not he stabbed her one time or more than one time?
Um, I when I first saw that happening, I ran to the to the other side.
>> I mean, can you imagine? Now, also keep in mind this, too. I think they replaced the carpet and kind of redid the room some and then they're both in the same room. How so? Pure monsters. Can you imagine pulling this off, number one, and then being comfortable enough with yourself and your actions to be able to sleep in the same room? I'm sitting here thinking like, wouldn't you just always have these like ghost images of what took place in there? Like anytime you looked at that part, you'd be like, "That's where Christine was gurgling."
That's when Joseph was like, "Oh my god." And he was shot. How could you even like do the things they probably did in that room after that? Now, let's take a look at a few clips of Brendan on the stand trying to convince the jury, "Oh, she was nothing. Nothing was coming between me and Christine. Who's Juliana?
I don't even know who she is."
>> Just an affair. um and not that there would be no other relationship that there's >> and that basically that this is something that that I have had affairs previously and that there's nothing that changes in mine and Christine's relationship.
>> Now, was Christine aware of your affair?
>> I don't believe she was aware of the affair between me and Juliana. Gh, I forgot how disgusting he was. And the when they panned over to his attorney, I literally my left eye started shaking. I was like, I forgot about how torturous this guy was. Right? If you watch the trial, you already know what I'm talking about. Okay, now here's the thing. He's basically sitting here saying like, "Oh, I'm Bro, I've had affairs before." Okay, bro. This is like nothing new, dude.
Okay, they never come between me and my wife ever. No, she didn't know about it.
Cha, why would she? She doesn't have to worry about it, though. It doesn't matter if she knows. I'm coming home to her, right? Like, he's such like a a bro, like an overageed bro, you know, like mentality or whatever. We'll get to his little love letter here in a minute.
Keep that in mind as we're watching these things of him dismissing his love for Juliana. And now, also, let's listen to him talk about all those accounts on Fet Life and how what are you talking about? What's that live?
>> Maybe six to eight weeks old.
I think that it's an absurd line of questioning for something that is not serious that we're going that a plan was made to get rid of my wife.
That is absolutely crazy.
So, uh, with no plan, um, let's talk about Silver Eagle Armory.
>> Sure.
>> Okay.
>> Here's the thing. He can try and dismiss a plan here, a plan that, that, oh, what are we even talking about? It was an interesting line of defense that he tried to take because essentially he was pivoting this to almost place it off on her, but there was so much evidence that pointed to the contrary. I'm not really even sure what he thought he was going to get out of talking about her. Let's take a look at one last clip.
>> Ever exist for you?
>> I did not know about them um until I did not know about them until after Christine died. Um, I didn't get to really I didn't get to see them until after uh Juliana's arrest.
>> And you're talking about the um the criminal reports, the police reports, things like that.
>> Yes.
>> The things that the Commonwealth gives.
>> Yes.
>> Okay. So, um let's um let's move toward um so let me ask you this. There are some dates that came up recently.
>> Some dates that came up recently, >> y'all. I can't I can't with this lawyer.
I cannot with the lawyer on. Bless his heart. He was just so out of his league with the technology and everything in the court. But again, you hear Brendan and overall, he's just deny, deny, deny.
You know, I didn't do the Fet Life account. I didn't see this until after she was arrested. you know, what are you talking about? She was just another notch in my bed. So on and so forth. But for someone who tried to be so dismissive with her, it was odd that he wrote a 14page love letter to her. If you remember us going over that one, I'll give you a quick little refresher.
Now, by page three, this is where he's at in his, you know, declaration of love for her. Everywhere I go, everything I do, I see you. You are truly unforgettable, babe. I've even looked through your laundry basket, okay? Your towel is like it's on the back of the closet door, babe. Most of our calls, I go upstairs and talk to you in the bedroom, okay? I often stare at our picture while we talk. Sometimes I flip through the strips of paper you sent me while we chat. Okay? I like to sit at the counter and talk at night or read my book and writing to you. If your spot is on my chest and shoulder, babe, that may be my spot. Where we spent our first night, long conversations, looking deep into your eyes, holding your hand, rubbing your leg, sharing intimate little moments. Obviously, there's a comfort in bed, cuddling and laying down, right? But the counter is where I shared myself with you. I spoke about my life, my love of you, hopes, dreams, plans. It's where we got to know each other. So, this is not somebody who Well, I'll tell you what this is. This is somebody wanted somebody to stay in jail and take the fall for them, okay?
This is singing 101, okay? This is what that is. He is absolutely trying to manipulate her. And I personally think the these two deserved each other. Okay?
Christine did not deserve what happened to her. Joseph didn't deserve what happened to him. These two were a train wreck that people were going to get damaged in the process. Okay? Because he was using Juliana and Juliana was using him. and it blew up in everybody's faces. Unfortunately, now even though all this went down, he tried to talk his way out, whatever, whatever, the jury would find him guilty. In criminal case number FE 2022-66, count one. We the jury on the issue joined in the case of the Commonwealth of Virginia versus Brendan Robert Banfield, defendant, find the defendant guilty of aggravated murder of Joseph Ryan and Christine Banfield as part of the same act or transaction.
This is how he looked. That's how I looked. He's like, "What? Bro, like he was shocked." Right? At that point, honestly though, he very well could have been like, "Take me away. Get me away from this attorney." If I was Brendan, I would have pled out after opening statements. I'm like, "Never mind. I can't do it. I can't sit here at this desk and listen to that. I'm guilty. I did it. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to." Whatever. Right. But here's the thing. Now sentencing is coming up and he's filed another way his attorney has filed a motion. So let's talk about that cuz it's going to take place the day of sentencing. So Brandon was convicted of multiple counts including aggravated murder and charges related to what happened inside that home that day.
In other words, the jury agreed with prosecutors that guess what? This was a planned double murder. It won't some random breakin gone wrong. Now he was hit with two counts of aggravated murder plus use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and child endangerment. In Virginia, aggravated murder is a class one felony. The only sentencing options are life in prison or death. And the Commonwealth did not pursue the death penalty here. Now, local reports and the Commonwealth's attorney have stated that as the law is written right now, Brennan Banfield will not walk free for the rest of his natural life. And basically, they're describing this upcoming sentencing day as an automatic life sentence. Now, since that guilty verdict came down, his defense team made a new move. Just days before the sentencing hearing, his lawyers filed a motion asking the judge to set aside the jury's verdict and essentially overturn it.
Now, I'm going to quote from this article here. The motion filed by the defense alleges that Banfield's silence was permitted to be used as evidence of his guilt in violation of his constitutional rights and that the Commonwealth knowingly failed to correct false testimony made by Banfield's former supervisor and that the Opair's testimony was permitted to be used as evidence against him despite a violation of his right to exclusion of witnesses.
So, they're going to argue this motion the day of sentencing before sentencing.
I believe that's set for 11:00 a.m. to do this and then sentencing will follow after that. My guess is this is going to go nowhere and he's going to get shipped out to the big house. This was such a tragic case. Now, looking at it again when I went to go make this like refresher video or whatever, I couldn't believe how much of it. It seems like years ago, and how much of it I forgot about like that cringy letter. I've made videos on this before, but if you want me to revisit any part of it for the other channel, the podcast channel or this channel, drop it in the comments.
If you want me to do like another dramatic reading of the 14-page letter, or if you want to cover her time on the stand or his time on the stands, whatever it is, let me know down in the comments below. Also, let me know if you think that they're going to win this motion or not. Right? So, we will see.
And again, we'll be streaming this together on the podcast channel, the links in description, on Friday, May 8th. So, come hang out with us over there. And before you come hang out with us, hang out in the comment section down below. And while you're in that comment section, if you could drop off some little sofas for myself, Rosco and Spirit, Cheeits in and spirit, Bow and Luke with their little peanut butter thing. They've been licking this whole time. If you hear little puppy licking going on over there, the boys have been bribed with little peanut butter Kongs.
Okay, now they've calmed down. So if you're just like, "Is my dog licking himself? What's going on up in here?"
It's the boys. Okay, it's the boys.
They're over there. So, but also don't forget most importantly you, the SOA squad, you make the channel possible. It would not be here without you and I greatly appreciate it. Now, before we get down that comment section and then in the live chat to stream the thing and get to doing all the stuff we talked about doing up in here, I'll see y'all real soon.
Can't roll my damn eyes.
