In off-road racing events like the Norra 1000, qualifying performance is critical because it determines starting positions for the entire race, which can significantly impact final outcomes; teams must balance aggressive qualifying with strategic resource management across multiple race days, as demonstrated by Polaris Pro R UTVs achieving top-15 finishes in their first qualifying attempt at Baja Mexico.

Polaris Pro R Qualifies for Baja Rally Race | Ep 2 Norra 1000 Offroad RallyAdded:
[music] >> Okay, we've landed in Ensenada, Mexico.
We've got both of our cars here at contingency. This is where they safety inspect all the cars and tomorrow is qualifying time. We're excited to be here. We've all arrived safe. So now it's time for some wasted >> [music] [music] >> We are at Rancho Nelson.
Here for qualifying.
We're ripping the razors off the trailer. The trucks are up there lined up.
Going to be a good day. I want Wyatt to win but I think RP's going to take it.
Sorry. Now made it out to the desert.
This is qualifying. Really is going to set the whole pace for the entire race.
There's a huge pack of cars that are racing out here. Cars that are qualifying right now. The spec trucks will get a chance to kind of watch them, see how they handle the course but side-by-sides obviously handle a lot different and so we'll jump in these cars here in a little bit. We'll go take a sight lap which will allow us to kind of look it over but at a slow speed and then we get one shot.
And this is going to determine how we start tomorrow which could determine how we finish. It's a long race. It's six days of racing. It's way too intense to say that this is going to determine the whole thing but in a large degree qualifying well does determine a lot of outcomes.
All right guys, me and Stone have this little thing for qualifying that we judge longest jump. We're going to try to do this with our barrel.
That jump was weak.
Prado must be close or something.
Some guy crumpled it into a corner.
We're going to go rescue him in the Raptor. I'm riding a wild bull right here.
>> at live look at Santi's seat.
He's on the fuel truck. And they're strapped. We're just uh ripping it. Say what's up, Gabo.
>> What's up? What's up? He's uh over where that ambulance is, so we're going to go find it.
Oh yeah, you can see he came in and uh right out. Here, Dodge, take over. I'm taking over. Okay, so the spec trucks are going right now. And uh hey, how's it going, man?
All good? All good. Hey, Dodge. What's going on? How's it going? Good. It's good. What happened?
It rolled over.
>> [laughter] >> It fell asleep.
Like did it roll this way?
>> the brakes, so Did he hit the wall?
Yeah, he smashed the brakes and he went So did he hit the wall though?
I don't know. I don't think so. He just He just smashed it and went that way.
Oh, that's his oils. Yep. Yep.
Oh.
That makes sense.
Yeah, of course. What happened? Were you not racing?
I am racing. Oh, really? What? I'm racing a side-by-side. Oh, cool. Are you qualifying? Yeah. Yeah, so we'll qualify after these guys. He just got his picture taken.
You should be asking for my picture though, okay?
That's how you do it. Yeah, so since the spec trucks are qualifying before us, we are taking the liberty of coming out to the course and watching all the corners. Obviously, the side-by-side handles a little different than the trucks, but it's good to see kind of how it goes in these different corners.
Like this truck just tipped over right here just because it kind of hit the brakes a little hard and the ruts are getting a little bigger. So, when the side-by-sides eventually end up going, all the ruts will be bigger, all the holes will be bigger. So, we're just kind of getting a first look.
It's like white.
We are really competitive, but the dynamic is different. Like both of them are his. So, he breaks his car, no big deal. If I break his car, big deal. So, there's definitely a dynamic there.
It is also a lot of like strategy in this race with the stages and where you start and qualifying first is huge, but at the same time there's a lot of strategy over the course of 6 days that can just change the entire outcome. So, we'll go fast today, but you know, we're not going to we're not going to water it up on day one. We have 6 days. We have to go 1,400 mi and they are stock. So.
During qualifying, or not he's going to say Not we're not going to water it up on day one and then like cut to like day one.
>> [laughter] >> That would not be funny. It's funny now.
It's not funny then. In truth, I'm taking white over red all day.
Home. To win, red.
>> [laughter] >> He's getting hyped over there. Sorry.
I'd take red all day.
>> Santi? I'd take Stellon over you all day. Who is going to win, you or Dodge?
I'm thinking there's a good chance I'm [music] going to.
>> [music] [music] >> way down on a Sunday afternoon.
>> [music] >> Oh, what I read between the lines.
The lines.
>> [music] >> Feeling like a hand of love to change.
>> [music] >> So, do you laugh at us?
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [singing] [music] [music] [music] >> So, qualifying went really, really well.
Uh we're checking back in. We took sixth. Uh so, pretty phenomenal for a car we've never driven like that. I've always had Pro R for a long time, but I've never driven at a qualifying speed.
So, uh that was really, really great, especially for a bone stock car. Ryan took 13th. So, we're both sitting inside the top 15.
Um you know, now uh we took all the spares, all of the extra stuff, all the extra weight off the cars for qualifying. So, these guys are over here putting it all back on. I'm actually just signing in to our Starlinks to make sure they're on so that we can have Starlink on board. And then tomorrow uh we're taking the start line. So, the format is the spec trucks, which is the kind of the highlight of the the the race. Uh they're, you know, have a whole special deal.
And then unlimited series, and then uh it's a 10-minute gap, and then the first Pro side-by-side. And then we're going to be 6 minutes after that. So, it's a minute apart starts. Uh we're learning all about the strategy of Nora and the minimum times and the maximum times and all this kind of fancy pants stuff that we're going to make a whole other video about because I know a lot of people are going to wonder how you actually race Nora and nobody here has explained it in a way that makes any sense. So, in another video we'll be doing that. So, make sure to subscribe so you don't miss that.
But yeah, now we just race.
>> [music] >> My name is Dodge Holman and over the course of the next week we are going to race 1400 miles through the grueling Baja desert.
We are racers and we love to win and so that's the goal.
