Supercell thunderstorms form when extremely warm, humid air collides with cooler air higher in the atmosphere, creating powerful updrafts that repeatedly lift hailstones through freezing layers, allowing them to grow larger before crashing to the ground; these storms also generate destructive straightline winds capable of causing significant damage in just a few minutes, as demonstrated by the July 21, 2026 outbreak across northern Italy where hailstones exceeded 10 cm in diameter and wind gusts reached 103 km/h.

Italy Supercell Outbreak! Giant Hail Hits Ferrara, Brescia, Mantua as Violent Storms Wreak Havoc
Added:Northern Italy has been hit by one of its most intense outbreaks of severe summer weather as powerful supercell thunderstorms unleashed destructive winds, giant hail, and torrential rain across several regions.
Communities stretching from Amelia Romana to Lombardi experienced rapidly changing conditions as calm skies gave way to violent storms within minutes.
Among the hardest hit areas was Ferrara Province where Vigorano Mayarda was struck by a powerful downburst producing wind gusts of around 90 km hour.
Trees were damaged, debris was scattered across roads, and visibility quickly deteriorated. Moments later, intense hail swept through the area, pounding homes, vehicles, and farmland with remarkable force.
The storm continued racing across Ferrara affecting Fosanova, San Marco, Mirabelloo, Barra and the city of Ferrara itself before reaching the Adriatic coastline near Leo Deli Estensi.
[screaming] Traffic on major roads slowed to a halt as hail covered highways while residents sought shelter from rapidly strengthening winds. Authorities warned people along beaches and coastal communities to move indoors as the dangerous storm approached.
Further south along the Adriatic coast, the same storm system swept across Ravena before continuing toward Pasaro, Anona, and Porto Rekenati. Powerful wind bursts, frequent lightning, and torrential rain created hazardous conditions with many streets temporarily overwhelmed by runoff.
Another destructive supercell developed across Lombardi, bringing extraordinary hail to communities including Gambara, Mantua, Reiolo, Suzara, and Capernanica.
Some hailstones were reported to exceed 10 cm in diameter, making them among the largest observed during this outbreak.
The massive ice stones, shattered windows, dented vehicles, damaged rooftops, and devastated crops across wide areas.
Residents captured astonishing scenes as giant hailstones crashed onto streets and gardens with incredible force. In Basano Delg Graa, fierce winds and driving rain swept across the city's famous bridge, while nearby communities reported widespread damage caused by hail and intense thunderstorms.
In Travaglato near Brussia, a powerful downburst combined with torrential rain to reduce visibility to nearly zero.
Drivers struggled to continue safely as sheets of rain and wind swept across roads.
Additional severe thunderstorms also affected parts of Leo, showing that the unstable weather pattern remained active throughout northern Italy.
Meteorologists say these destructive storms formed as extremely warm, humid air collided with cooler air higher in the atmosphere. Powerful updrafts inside the supercell thunderstorms repeatedly lifted hailstones through freezing layers, allowing them to grow larger before crashing to the ground.
The same atmospheric conditions also generated destructive straightline winds capable of causing significant damage in only a few minutes.
While Italy faced the most severe impacts, heavy rainfall also affected parts of Romania, including Moroweni, where intense rain created localized flooding and disrupted daily activities.
As residents begin cleaning up, the images emerging from northern Italy reveal the extraordinary power of these storms. Giant hail, destructive downbursts, and relentless thunderstorms left behind damaged property, disrupted transportation, and a reminder that extreme weather can develop with little warning. Authorities continue urging people to monitor weather forecasts and remain prepared whenever severe thunderstorm warnings are issued.
