Carl Jung famously said that until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate. And this is probably the most important statement ever made about the unconscious mind because it's the entire basis of what we call shadow work.
Your shadow is every part of yourself that you repress or attempt to disown.
These shadows begin to be created in childhood because every time you were told not to cry or not to be angry or not to want too much, your subconscious mind was being told that these parts of you are unacceptable or unlovable. And so all the emotional energy of these parts of you has to go underground into the shadow. And then all of these disowned parts of you begin to run your life literally from the shadows and they generate detrimental behavior patterns that feel extremely difficult to break.
And so Jung understood that healing requires integrating these shadows back into the light of your conscious awareness again so that they lose this power to run your life from the shadows anymore. And Carl Jung was absolutely right about this. Shadow work is one of the most essential things a human being can ever do. But here is one of the problems with shadow work that few people ever talk about. For most people, traditional shadow work feels mostly like guesswork. You may have your different methods like journaling or sitting down in meditation trying to provoke feelings to come up and identify patterns associated with them and sometimes you have a feeling for what traumas connect with what patterns, but other times you're left totally guessing in the dark. So can we really know if we've found the right trauma connected to the right pattern? Can we actually know that we've identified the root of a shadow correctly? And maybe most importantly of all, can we actually know when we've healed a shadow? Because there's a difference between intellectually acknowledging that something exists and actually integrating that shadow back into the self again. And this is where most people get stuck. I've heard from countless people who've done shadow work for years start to wonder, "Am I actually making progress in integrating my shadow?" And if you've struggled with these kinds of questions, then I'm here to give you some good news that muscle testing can absolutely answer each one of these questions for you because your subconscious mind is the place where your shadows actually live. And so using muscle testing, you can ask your subconscious mind, "What is at the root of any particular trauma or shadow that you're working with? Is there a blocked emotion here?" Yes. Is it rooted in shame? Yes. Muscle testing can help you identify what blocked emotions are at the root of every shadow, what is required to release them, and what patterns they're fueling. All of this with no guesswork and no wondering. Just your shadows speaking directly to you in the clearest language possible. Yes or no? True or false?
