'My Mother in Law Mocked Me—Until She Learned My Dress Was Worth More Than Her House'Added:
"You're so plain, and completely devoid of taste." My mother-in-law sneers every time we meet. With her love for all things luxurious, Blakely never misses a chance to take a jab at me. She often says, "A woman like you isn't worthy of being my son's wife." One particular day, as she mocked the dress I was wearing, she deliberately spilled wine on it. "Ugh, stop being so cheap." She scoffed. But her arrogance crumbled when she discovered the truth. My name is Reese, a 28-year-old housewife. I married Vincent 2 years ago, and though we haven't had children yet, we're enjoying a peaceful and happy life. My husband is kind, and we've even started discussing having a baby soon. However, my relationship with my mother-in-law has been rocky from the start. Blakely has been critical of me since the day I entered the family, and even after 2 years, there's been no progress in mending our bond. I tried to be amicable, but she showed no interest in doing the same. "I wonder what kind of woman my son would bring home." She mused when we first met. Her next words stung. "She's so plain, not impressive at all." It was obvious from the beginning Blakely didn't think I was good enough for Vincent. My background is modest. My father works in an office, and my mother is a nurse. But when Blakely learned this, she scoffed. "Your mother works? You must have been terribly poor." She said with pity in her eyes. Blakely had never worked a day in her life. "I was raised in wealth."
She often boasted. "Since childhood, I've only worn the finest clothes. Cheap things never suited me." I never knew how to respond to her endless jabs, so I usually just smiled to avoid conflict. I do prefer simple clothing and minimal makeup, which contrasts sharply with her extravagant fashion choices, luxury brand outfits, expensive jewelry, and heavy makeup. "You have no sense of style." She'd say with disdain. "You only know cheap things. Why did my son marry you? I raised him to appreciate the best." Though her words were hurtful, I tried not to let them affect me. My father-in-law and husband were always kind to me, and Vincent's grandmother, my grandmother-in-law, welcomed me with open arms. Unlike Blakeley, she wasn't materialistic at all. Even though their family had wealth, she often laughed about it.
"People make too much fuss about money," she'd say. "We built these homes when land was cheap. They're not as grand as people think." She and I often went out for lunch or tea, and she treated me warmly. "It feels like I have another granddaughter," she'd say with a smile.
She had no daughters or granddaughters of her own, so she doted on me, making my life in the family much more bearable. One day, Blakeley called me.
"My birthday is next month, and we're hosting a grand party at the house. I expect you to attend with Vincent." Of course, I agreed. "It's my 60th birthday, so it'll be an extravagant event. All our relatives and friends will be there. I hope you dress appropriately. My son will look fine, but I'd be mortified if you showed up looking as you always do," she said pointedly. Her message was clear. I needed to wear something expensive and stylish. I was at a loss. I didn't own anything that met her expectations. When I mentioned this to Vincent, he told me not to worry and suggested we dress up just a bit more formally. On the day of the party, Vincent and I stopped by a department store to pick out a gift for Blakeley. Since she valued luxury, I figured she wouldn't complain if Vincent picked something elegant for her.
Afterward, we had lunch and headed home to get ready. Just as I was about to change, I received a call from my grandmother-in-law.
"Come to my house right now," she said.
"I'm getting ready for the party," I replied. "I'll stop by before heading over." "No need to change. Just come as you are," she insisted. Confused, I decided to go. I asked Vincent to get ready without me and plan to meet him at the party later.
When I arrived, my grandmother-in-law greeted me warmly.
"Your mother-in-law is making quite the fuss about this party." She chuckled.
"All morning, deliveries have been coming in. Flowers, decorations, everything." She led me to the sitting room, where several exquisite chests were neatly arranged. "Raise, you were told to dress appropriately today, weren't you?" She asked knowingly. "I have just the thing for you." She opened one of the chests and pulled out a breathtaking dress.
"This was mine, but I don't wear it anymore. It would be a waste to let it sit unused. I'd love for you to wear it." The dress was exquisite, clearly well-preserved and special. She also pulled out matching accessories.
"With this, Blakely won't have a word to say." She said with a wink.
I was touched by her kindness. She must have noticed how Blakely treated me and wanted me to attend the party looking my best.
I didn't know much about designer clothes, but from the way she spoke, it was obvious this dress was valuable.
"I can't accept something so precious."
I hesitated. But she simply smiled and placed the dress in my hands.
"It's fine, dear." She reassured me. "I know you'll take good care of it. That's why I want you to have it." With that, she helped me into the dress, her practiced hands adjusting every detail.
It had been years since I last wore such an elegant gown, since my 21st birthday, in fact.
"It's been a long time for me, too." I admitted with a small smile. My grandmother-in-law chuckled. "Well, this is the perfect occasion, isn't it?
Especially for such a grand event." As we chatted, I hadn't even realized my outfit was completely prepared. Then, a visitor arrived at my grandmother-in-law's house.
"I've arranged for someone to do your hair and makeup." She said warmly. "You should look absolutely perfect for the party." She had even thought of that.
"She's my precious granddaughter." She added, smiling. "Of course, I have to make sure she looks stunning." With her help, I was transformed, elegant and glamorous. "Your mother-in-law won't have anything to complain about tonight." She assured me confidently.
Just as I finished getting ready, my phone rang. It was Vincent. He had arrived at my parents-in-law's house. I turned to my grandmother-in-law, grateful beyond words. "Thank you so much. I'll head over as soon as I change." I told her. She saw me off with a warm smile. When Vincent saw me in my outfit, he looked visibly surprised.
Together, we stepped into his parents' home, where the hall was already bustling with relatives. The celebration had begun. At the center of it all sat my mother-in-law, Blakely, beaming in a striking red dress.
"Happy birthday, Mother." I said, approaching her with a gift. She looked me up and down, her expression shifting.
Without a word, she grabbed my arm and pulled me aside into the kitchen. "What is this cheap dress?" she spat. "I told you to come dressed properly." Her words were even sharper than usual, most likely because she was already drunk.
Then, before I could react, she lifted her glass and splashed wine all over my dress. The deep red stain spread instantly. "See? You shouldn't force yourself into something so plain." She sneered. "You have no sense of fashion.
That's why I can't stand people from low-class families." I stood there, stunned, as she continued her tirade.
"You should just leave. I don't want you ruining my party in that cheap dress." I swallowed hard, my voice barely above a whisper. "This This is your mother's dress." For a moment, she looked confused. "What? Who? My mother?" She slurred. "What nonsense are you talking about?" "This dress belonged to your mother." I repeated. "She gave it to me." Just then, a familiar voice rang out from behind me. "Are you calling my dress cheap?" I turned to see my grandmother-in-law standing there. She walked over and inspected the stain with a frown. "Oh dear, what a mess." She said, shaking her head.
I lowered my gaze, feeling humiliated.
"I'm sorry."
I murmured. "No need to apologize, dear." She reassured me. She pulled out a handkerchief and gently dabbed at the stain. "If you blot it like this, it won't spread. We'll get it properly cleaned later." Blakeley, who had been watching, suddenly seemed to sober up.
Her face paled. My grandmother-in-law turned to her with a pointed stare.
"So, tell me, exactly which part of this dress did you find cheap?" She asked coolly.
The room fell silent.
"This dress was custom-made decades ago." She continued. "It's worth several million dollars. The fabric and craftsmanship are top-tier. Just the kind of thing you claim to appreciate, Blakeley." My mother-in-law's eyes widened in shock. Even I was taken aback. I had no idea the dress was so valuable. "I I didn't realize."
Blakeley stammered, her arrogance crumbling.
"Oh, so you think you can judge people's taste when you can't even recognize true quality?" My grandmother-in-law snapped.
"You strut around in overpriced brands, but you don't know the first thing about real elegance. It's embarrassing."
Blakeley's face turned crimson. She opened her mouth, but couldn't find a single word to say.
"Those who truly understand fashion don't need labels to prove it." My grandmother-in-law continued. "And yet, here you are, insulting your own mother's dress. How disgraceful."
Blakeley bit her lip, her pride in tatters. Then, my grandmother-in-law delivered the final blow.
"What kind of person treats their daughter-in-law with such cruelty? It's shameful." Blakeley looked on the verge of tears. My grandmother-in-law sighed, finally releasing her from her glare.
"That's enough. Reyes and I are leaving.
Enjoy your party." She declared.
Blakeley's vibrant red dress, which she had worn so proudly, now seemed garish and ridiculous in the moment. My grandmother-in-law turned to me. "Wait here. I'll bring you a fresh outfit from home." After changing into the clothes she'd provided, I left with her and Vincent. My husband, who had heard the entire story from his grandmother, was furious. That night, instead of staying at the party, the four of us, my grandmother-in-law, my grandfather-in-law, Vincent, and I went out for a quiet dinner. It was peaceful, free from Blakeley's toxicity. Later, both Vincent and my grandmother-in-law confronted Blakeley again, warning her to never treat me that way again, or to waste money on meaningless extravagance.
"Maybe now she'll learn some humility," my grandmother-in-law mused. Blakeley, unable to argue, could only nod with a pale face. To top it all off, my grandmother-in-law made an unexpected declaration. "I'll be giving all my dresses, jewelry, and valuables to raise," she said. "There's no point leaving them to someone who doesn't understand their worth." I had always kept silent about Blakeley's behavior, but it was clear my grandmother-in-law had seen through her all along. Later, with a sly smile, she revealed to me that my dress had already been professionally cleaned, looking as good as new.
I was overwhelmed with gratitude. Even though I still don't fully understand the value of such expensive things, I've learned something far more important: kindness, dignity, and the true meaning of class. Thanks for watching. See you again in the next video. Stay stunned.
