Movile Cave: A Hidden World Sealed for 5 Million Years

[00:00:00]5 million years ago, this cave was sealed off from the rest of Earth. No sunlight, [music] no air exchange, no known way in or out. And yet, something inside [music] is still alive.

[00:00:11]In 1986, Romanian geologist Christian [music] Lascu discovered Movile Cave beneath southern Romania near the Black Sea, a place with almost no oxygen, toxic [music] air and water filled with poisonous chemicals for roughly 5.5 million years.

[00:00:25]By all logic, everything inside should be dead. But it isn't.

[00:00:30]>> [music] >> Scientists discovered an entire ecosystem thriving in total darkness, more than 50 [music] species, including blind spiders, water scorpions, leeches, and a giant cave centipede called Cryptops speleoreus, the king of the cave.

[00:00:46]37 of those species are found nowhere else on Earth. Some evolved without eyes, color faded [music] from their skin, others grew long limbs to feel their way through the darkness. And the strangest part, this entire ecosystem [music] survives without sunlight. Instead of photosynthesis, life here runs on chemosynthesis.

[00:01:04]Bacteria feed on toxic sulfur [music] and methane in the water, turning poison into energy and forming the base of an entire underground food chain.

[00:01:13]A completely separate world. Even today, [music] researchers enter only a few times each year, descending 20 m into one of the most alien places on Earth.

[00:01:22]Because one small [music] contamination could wipe out a hidden world that survived in isolation for 5 million years.
