Its coastal plane provides habitat for denim polar bears and caling grounds for the porcupine caribou herd. For the Gwitchin and Inu Pac peoples, this isn't just land. It's culture, sustenance, and a way of life that must endure for future generations. But right now, the entire coastal plane, 1.56 million acres, is on the chopping block for oil and gas drilling. Drilling here means more roads, pipelines, spills, and irreversible damage to a fragile ecosystem. It would fragment habitat, disturb wildlife, and industrialize a place that supports life, holds deep meaning for communities, and should remain protected for generations, not handed over to corporate interests. With the lease coming up on June 5th, companies are considering their bids.
