The New York Yankees have assembled what is considered the top starting rotation in Major League Baseball, featuring Garrett Cole (12.67 innings, 12 strikeouts, 0.71 WHIP, 0 earned runs) and Cam Schlitler (12 starts, 7-2 record, 1.58 ERA, 0.85 WHIP), with Max Scherzer expected to return from injury. However, the bullpen remains a significant weakness, with David Bednar's 1.57 WHIP (up from 1.04 last season) raising concerns about his effectiveness as closer, while Fernando Cruz's 1.96 ERA and 99th percentile strikeout rate suggest he may be a better option for the closer role.

NEW Yankees UPDATE: INSANE! IS THIS REAL?Ajouté :
The Yankees are in a situation where in my opinion they haven't been here in quite some time.
And this is what this is how they modeled their World Series championship teams, right? Those World Series championship teams had really good pitching staffs.
And right now with Garrett Cole and Cam Schlitler one, two, we're not even talking about Max Freed right now, right? He's on the injured list. Who knows when he'll be back. Hopefully he's back soon. I hope he is. I would love to experience a starting rotation with Garrett Cole and Max Freed in it. Now you have Cam Schlitler. When we signed Max Freed, no one really knew who Schlitler was. I did. I made a video on him in 2024 talking about how he earned a promotion from high A to double A. So, I kind of had an idea of who he was. But no one in their right mind thought Schlitler was going to be this good. He could win the Sai Young award this year, especially with Scooble with him and in his injury.
Schlitler, if he continues this, he doesn't even have to be this good. He could be almost this good and still win the Sai Young. It was just what he's doing is remarkable. And the New York Yankees, this one two punch and Garrick Cole Sch slitler. And then you have the other parts of your rotation. Rhdon who's been so so this season. He need we need uh him to be a little bit better obviously.
Weathers he's been good, right? He's a great 34 starter. Will Warren's been pretty solid. I mean, the Yankees are just in a spot, they set themselves up in a spot where they have, I think, the top rotation in Major League Baseball.
There is no other starting rotation that I would take over the Yankees right now, especially with how Garrett Cole with how he's been pitching.
It's remarkable how well Cole has has been going.
Now, so far this season for Mr. Garrett Cole, I mean, two starts, right? Two starts.
So, let's relax a little bit. But 12 and two/3 innings, two starts, 12 strikeouts, 0.71 whip, no earned runs so far, none.
And his velocity is at the 77th percentile, 96.3 miles per hour. He topped out at I mean he he lost zero on his fast ball and in his rehab assignments he was he threw I think 100 in one game.
99 100.
His stuff is 100% there. His command is 1,000% there.
You're going to have this guy in your postseason rotation. A guy who was a part of your 2024 roster, a part of that World Series run.
I mean, it's wasn't a World Series one run. We didn't win, but he was a part of that rotation that helped get you there.
And he was our ace.
He just needs to cover first base this time anyway.
But Garrick Cole pitching the way he's pitching.
Great start. And then you have Schlitler pitching the way he's pitching.
LOOK AT THAT.
THAT'S RIDICULOUS.
That's He's at the top of the I know I've said in the past with when it comes to Gisham, oh, his Savant page is all red. That's great, but he's got to produce, too. Well, Schlitler's is all red and he's producing. 12 starts so far this season. Seven and two with a 15 earned run average.
0.85 85 whip.
That's the one two that teams are going to have to face in the postseason. Of course, we still have to make it there, but right now the Yankees are closer to first place and they went in there and took Kansas City by the FREAKING HAIR AND DRAGGED THEM ALL OVER THE PLACE. THAT'S WHAT YOU WANT TO SEE. That's what you want to see.
You want to see guys like Trent Gisham perform and he did.
He got his batting average up to 206 714 OPS.
It was very low guys. It was low at one point and I love that he turned it around and that he's turning it around.
Hopefully it carries through the rest of the season. We need him.
And then just looking at Aaron Judge because I love to look at his numbers. I get it. 934 OPS. Look at his previous two seasons, his MVP seasons. 1145 last year, 1159 in 2024. 934 OPS. 17 homers this season. I mean, he's not really not slowing down. Is this a down year for him compared to years past? I mean, so far, sure. But what if we get that Aaron Judge run, that Aaron Judge stretch where all he's doing is getting hits and absolutely annihilating the baseball. We haven't seen that yet this season and we're used to seeing that.
And he has a 934 OPS and we haven't even seen that seen that domination by Aaron Judge.
Now, the offense will never be that much of an issue if you're 5 through9 hits. Of course, your your 5 through9 6 through9 has to hit. And Anthony Vulpi, I mean, props to him. He's been hitting a little bit, right? He's been hitting ever since he's come up. 257 batting average, 838 OPS. I mean, it's his on base percentage that Mets series really helped him out a lot, but he's been very productive.
Ahmed Rosario, he's been very productive. We talked about him last night. He's been very productive. And here's an unsung hero.
Nobody really talks about him. Max Schuman. I I get it. He's a bench player, but he's been very good off the bench. He serves a very particular role, and that's fine.
That's a role we need him for. He's playing incredibly well.
But to go back to the starting rotation to have what you have in it in Garrick Cole and in a healthy Garrick Cole, a dominant Cam Schlitler and then you throw Max Freed into it eventually.
Sky's is the limit for this team. But the one thing, the one issue that this Yankee team has, and we all know it, we all knew it heading into the season, and it's still a problem. It's that New York Yankee bullpen.
That's a problem. And listen, I like David Bednar. I do. I don't have anything against him. I like Bedar.
But at the same time, we have to be honest.
And I know a lot of people think that he can still be the Yankee closer. I for one.
I don't feel too great about it.
I don't. I'm sorry. I don't.
His offspe stuff very good.
Right. But he walks in my opinion for a closer walks too many hitters.
He gives up too many hits. He has a 157 whip. Last year he had a 1.04 whip.
Last year was so much better.
This year he's pitching more like the pitcher he was in 2024.
That's not what you want. That's not what the Yankees need right now. And I'm not saying for him to be Mariano Rivera.
Not saying that nobody will ever be him.
I'm just saying we need a closer who pitched more like Ben Nar of last year.
That's the kind of closer we need.
Look at Camilo.
want to look at a guy who since coming here, his whip is good, his erra 514.
He's got to be better.
He's got to be better.
Fernando Cruz, to be honest with you, he's such an important piece to this Yankee bullpen. The difference between him and Bedar, Cruz might put guys on the pond, he gets out of it. Bednar. I mean, listen, here's a 470 RA. Cruz is a 196.
Why not try Cruz as the closer on the Yankees? I mean, look at look at that whiff.
99th percentile.
I would try Cruz as the closer. Some people might think I'm freaking crazy for saying that, and that's okay. That's fine. I I've been called a lot worse, but at the same time, I do think you have a better option in your bullpen, and that's Fernando Cruz.
But you need to go outside the organization and add some guys. You also have some guys internally like Yvanni Cruz who had a couple decent appearances for the Yankees that then they sent him right down. Didn't agree with that. Still don't.
But if the Yankees want to have, in my opinion, an overwhelming dominance this postseason, which that one through five in that lineup, that one through three through four in that rotation, even through five, but you you never have the f five pitchers in your rotation. That's another thing too in the postseason. That's the other thing too though. A guy like Weathers, a guy like Warren, he'll be a bullpen guy in the postseason.
But if the Yankees can sh up that bullpen and if that bottom of the lineup can provide some type of consistency, it should be very it should be a very exciting October. Very exciting. Maybe the New York Knicks can give this Yankee team some of whatever they're drinking.
That this Knicks run has been incredible.
But listen guys, that's all I got for you. Thank you guys so much for watching. I'll see you next time. Take care.
