This video reviews The Twilight Zone episode 'Escape Clause,' where a hypochondriac sells his soul to the devil for immortality but finds himself bored with eternal life, ultimately killing his wife in a suicide attempt and facing life imprisonment. The reviewer critiques the episode's writing as weaker than typical Twilight Zone episodes, noting that while the concept of immortality is interesting, the execution falls short of its potential. The reviewer argues that ending with the character imprisoned for eternity would have been more impactful than having him agree to die, suggesting that the episode's exploration of whether immortality brings fulfillment is underdeveloped.

The Twilight Zone S1 EP6 - Escape Clause ReviewAdded:
So a hypochondriac meets with the devil.
I swear this isn't a punchline to a joke. This is the plot of the episode.
And the hypochondriac sells his soul for immortality [music] and it works. He goes to the subway station and jumps headfirst into the tracks.
He survives and for some reason after only jumping onto the tracks, he's now bored with being immortal. There isn't the remotest element of excitement in it.
In short, I'm bored with it. Dude, you just got immortality hours ago and you only tried killing yourself once and you're bored with it? What a prick. He tries going on top of his apartment building and killing himself, but his wife tries to stop him. And his wife slips and dies.
>> [screaming] >> So now he's charged with first-degree murder and he admits to all of it thinking he'll get the electric chair for killing his wife. Turns out he gets life in prison and he immediately regrets the decision. What an idiot.
This episode's decent, but the writing isn't as strong as it usually is with this show. I like that the lead character is pretty unlikable and some of the concepts are good, but I feel like they needed to do more with the concept than it actually did. Plus I found the ending to be a bit lame.
>> How about that escape clause?
You care to utilize it now?
>> [music] >> Ending it with him being in prison for eternity would have been a pretty solid ending, but it had to end with him agreeing with the devil to kill him.
This feels pretty unneeded, but otherwise fun episode, albeit flawed.
