In Yasujiro Ozu's 'Good Morning,' the director prioritizes character development over aesthetic interference, creating endearing characters who live authentically in their world; this approach requires viewers to actively engage with the film's stillness and silences, making character the fundamental lifeblood of fiction that transcends the director's distinctive visual style.

GOOD MORNING is a fart comedy diagesis/meditation on what it means to live (in a society?)Ajouté :
Ozu's the best. I'm partial to Good Morning. Good Morning is an amazing movie that is, you know, Michael Cera introduced this to me through his Criterion Closet video, which was him talking about how it's a it's a juvenile film at its heart. It's a classical Ozu movie with all the locked off shots and everything like that. It's a very still motion movie and a drama. Has a lot of silence to it. But just as much it's about kids experiences in kind of a transitional period in Japan. And the big theme being television. Is television evil? And they have to go over to friends house to watch TV. Their parents won't let them have a TV. But they they get so much of their their incidental joy from farting. They know how to fart on command and farting is like the main drive of humor in the movie. It is in many ways half a comedy.
It's like it's a fart comedy from Yasuhiro Ozu. I think that's amazing.
And when I watched this it was like This is a This is great. If this is Japanese cinema, I need to see all of it. Now, it's not. But Ozu really knows how to make characters endearing to stand on their own. So much to separate from the aesthetic interference that he puts there. Because the films are not engaging in a popular sense in the way that he's constructing the images, the way that he's constructing the edit.
He's letting you have to lean in. Like either you're falling asleep or leaning in. And that's the only way that it's going to work. Good Morning is just such a good example that if the characters are good, that doesn't matter because you're leaning in. The characters are endearing. Because you like these characters are willing to live in their worlds in the same way that you live in your world. Your life is filled with silences and your life doesn't have cuts. Your life doesn't zoom in. You're experiencing things from your perspective, but the thing that makes life worth living is because you are interesting, he is interesting, She is interesting. They are interesting. So on and so on. You know, character is the lifeblood of fiction and Ozu understood that and stood by that in his aesthetic principle. And I think that's amazing.
