She Started Choking 😱… A Worrying Time for JolandaAdded:
on my life. I'm back. Now, today is Thursday. Yesterday was live day because it was Wednesday. Um, and yesterday morning started out really quite well.
Frey and I were off doing our usual morning feed live. And then in the afternoon, I took you out with Anna for a little hack around the farm away from all the hustle and bustle down here on the yard with all the building work being done on the ship and and the barns. So, it was a really nice day.
Everything felt really nice and calm and relaxed and everything was, you know, going just as it should be. Um, as we all know, things can change in an instance. Um, and by the evening time, it had changed up here right where I'm stood now. As Frey and Molly were doing their evening rounds and feeding everybody, they'd come up here to feed Special Yodel and all seemed fine. Yodel was tucking into her food. you know, she's always quite greedy. She scoffs it quite quickly. And then she started choking.
So, they gave me a shout and I came out to find that Yodel was choking. As I said, uh, she was pulling the Fleman's posture an awful lot. Um, which is, you know, that can be a sign that they they've smelt something, but it can often be a sign in in a lot of discomfort. And she clearly was not in a good way. Um, so my first instinct was just to go and get some water to try and flush her mouth out in case it was something that had just got sort of lodged in the back of her throat. Here's Yodel here.
But it was very clear quite quickly that it was a bit more severe than that. So it was a case of get in touch with Sam and see whether he could pop down to help out. Now, as many of you know, Fians are prone to a condition called mega esophagus, which was something that I first learned about many years ago after Hoitzer had a choking episode. And I found found out more from the Fenway Foundation, who've done an awful lot of research into this in the breed. Now, at the time when Hoitzer choked, it was really frightening, but Sam came along at the time, came along, got that blockage cleared, and was able to scope Hoitzer to see what was actually going on. And we found two areas where the muscles weren't working properly. Down around the sort of thoracic area down here and one part sort of higher up on his esophagus.
Now from that day on, I changed everything about how I fed the horses. I moved away from any kind of sort of musli or or sort of feed that could cause irritation and compaction and I moved on to sort of nuts and pellets, anything that could really be um soaked and create a nice soft feed for them. So I spoke to Sam, sent him a little bit of video. He very kindly managed to come down. He was all the way up in Wigton, over an hour away, but he came down and got a tube into her throat to clear all that impaction. And what you're basically going to see in today's video is some of the clips that we took. We didn't take any of her when she was really badly choking because we were just focusing um on just trying to get her more comfortable. But as you can see, she's back out in the field with Spesh today. But if you want to see some of what's happened, then you know, keep on watching. You'll see Sam's visit. As I say, you know, you can hear her still coughing now, and that is a concern. And I am going to arrange for Sam to come and do a scope um just so that we can see the extent of the problem. But I would be very very surprised if this is a mega esophagus.
Let's get a little bit.
I say cough it up, sweetheart.
Right. Come down again. Come down again.
Come on, sweetheart.
>> You can do it.
>> It is.
>> It's coming out of her nose and out of her mouth. I do.
Right. Come on, Yoda. Yoda. Come on.
Come on. Big cough. Special. That's not helpful.
Come on, darling.
Yoda, you're looking a little bit more comfortable now.
But she's got seditive on board now. And the idea is that if she goes to sleep and drops her head down, that gravity will help clear whatever's got stuck in her esophagus. But just to be on the safe side, Sam is coming down and he'll pop a tube down and flush her through just to make sure that whatever's in there is completely cleared. But I wouldn't be surprised if we find that she's got a touch of mega esophagus.
Can you have a good old cough?
No, but she is a lot more settled than she was earlier.
>> But well spotted both of you. Um because you'd just gone up to feed her.
>> Yeah.
>> And spotted that she was having a choke.
>> I thought we cleared it. But she >> Oh, she ced and then she tried to go for special food. So it's like okay, but then no. I feel like that's I feel like she had cleared it and then that bit to have another.
>> Yeah, but it has been coming out of her mouth and down her nose.
Sam's on his way. We can get it cleared and if she has got a touch of mega esophagus then we just deal with it, don't we, Yoda?
Just like we have with Hoitzer over the years.
Poor Sam. I've dragged him out from wherever he was north of Cumbria, but he's going to come and make sure that little Yodel is okay.
>> You still got stuff coming down.
>> Yeah, I know. She might. I mean, I I'll I wouldn't normally Well, we'll see if she's blocked. We'll see. But I wouldn't normally flush one out on her first visit, but I'll I'm not anticipating leaving before it's cleared because Leaving it for half an hour and coming back doesn't make a lot of sense.
>> No, not really. Not when you've driven over an hour to get here. Where were you?
>> Uh, just north of Wigton.
>> It's only an hour and 10 to get from the weekend to hit.
>> But funny enough, actually, Molly said that >> Bring this way a bit so I can >> vets should actually have blue lights.
>> No.
>> No.
>> We I think I don't know. I think you can get a green light, but gives you no rights other than alerting people.
>> Oh, really?
>> Yeah.
>> A green doctor light. Yeah. Yeah.
>> Do you want to sit down on that side or whichever? There you go.
>> I don't think she's going anywhere.
>> Well, good lass. And you're going to snort this all over me, aren't you?
>> Yep. Make you nice and >> I should have put a jacket on, shouldn't I?
>> Yeah, but at least you've not got a cream top on like me.
>> Good girl, Yodor. Oh, I know. Darling, >> don't bash me in the head.
>> Doan's not that.
>> Stop.
Can you give seditive as well?
>> Yeah. Yeah. No, I can give give them more if we need. The problem is famous last words. It's usually that bit they don't like. Thank you. And then if you give them more, they're so dope and they won't swallow the tube.
>> Right. Okay.
>> It actually makes it You're better to have a little bit of resistance to get the tube in.
And then let's see. Are we in there?
>> Rather than not reacting at all.
>> Oh, we're in. It's >> coming back out.
>> Yeah. Okay.
She was very much this top part.
>> This was where it was solid.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, bless you.
Good lass. All right. All right.
I don't really want to push.
Good girl.
>> Harder than that.
Good lass. Good girl.
>> Is there more resistance than you'd expect?
>> Yeah. Def. Uh, oh, that's going in.
>> Can you just tell the tube there a second, please?
>> Yeah.
>> Thank you.
>> Good girl.
Okay. Right. Okay.
That pretty much looks like your feed coming back down through the tube.
Yeah, I think that should be running out. So, I think probably what's happened is the tip of the tube's plugged like that.
>> See, >> and got Oh, there we go.
Because just for the purpose of the video, >> um I when she was choking and she was really uncomfortable and bad, my automatic reaction was to >> flush her with some water to try and clear whatever it is. But you're saying that's the wrong thing.
>> Well, it's not it's it's not the wrong thing. It just won't really because it's way down here. It won't really achieve anything. What um See if I can go in again. What I'm uh trying to do here is get to the point of the obstruction >> and then put uh liquid in. It'll flush >> to soften it.
>> Yeah. And it'll just it'll sort of flush it out around the side of the tube. But >> so what I did with syringing the water in, would that not have helped >> once I'd done it? Uh, it depends how much of it she swallowed and and also if she swallowed it, it's I mean it'll help a bit, but it's all just going to end up coming out of her nose. Well, >> when she puts her head down.
>> Yeah, because because she she can't swallow it in the stomach cuz the esophagus is blocked.
>> That tube again.
No, I got it. Okay. All right. Let's we got Let's just take that out.
All right. We got >> At least that's coming out.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
I do that.
>> Yeah. Yeah, it's pretty sludgy that >> I mean their feeds are always soaked and it was just literally the last couple of days cuz we'd got some extra treats.
>> Yep.
>> Um they just went in whole.
>> Yeah. No, it's it's for one of better phrase one of those things, you know.
It's um Yeah. And it's >> won't be the first or it could be anything.
>> Yep.
Oh no, I'm a meanie. I'm sorry. The the classic is unsoaked sugar beat. That's the one that really does it. Yeah.
>> Yeah. Cuz that swells quite quickly, doesn't it?
>> It does. Yeah.
>> And then um Yeah. Uh they they bolt it unsoaked, >> sticks in the esophagus.
And then it um it tends to swell up.
>> Right. I think I'm just going to put a bit of liquid in now.
>> Yeah.
>> Got before we >> funnel help.
>> Yeah.
>> You're too tall.
>> Yeah. But you're not exactly sure, are you?
>> Well, no, but still.
>> Do you want to stand on the rocks?
>> I wondered about that, but it >> Oh, is that it?
>> Yeah. See, it's coming there. You see that?
>> Yep. There you go. Oh, that's all coming out now.
>> Oh, there we go. That's a huge amount there.
Doesn't help that you're so greedy, does it, Yodel?
>> I'm quietly confident it won't teach you any lessons whatsoever.
>> No, I'm sure it won't.
>> Big a minute ago. It's just gone back up.
When the kids overeat, it doesn't teach them not to do it.
>> No.
>> Oh, there we go.
>> Nice.
>> So, do you reckon it's not worth putting a camera down to see if there's merosoft? It's it's I mean uh yeah it's it's worth it but as you say what what will it won't necessarily change >> um >> anything in her management.
>> Yeah.
>> Not unless it's really severe.
>> Yeah.
>> In which case >> we'd need to be keeping her.
>> Just pull the tube back just slightly, please.
Yeah, it's fine. Put your head down last. Put your head down. That's it.
That's coming down your nose.
>> No, absolutely. Cuz it >> be comfy.
Oh, straight out of her nose.
>> Yeah.
Put your head down. Put your head down.
Put your head down. Put your head down.
>> Right. Okay. Just just just come out.
That's fine.
>> Yeah. Come out.
>> Yeah.
>> All right.
>> What we'll do because Yeah. I if she's more heavily sedated then then that's fine. That's fine. Good girl. It all come out.
>> If while we're doing that and her head's below this point or low.
>> Yeah.
>> Then everything will just run out round the side of it around the side of the tube. Um but she's too awake at the moment. So just make her slightly dopier.
It's a good end to the day, is it?
It's not a good end to the day.
You all right, Spacey?
Yeah. For fall over. You're a bit too big to fall over.
>> She won't fall over.
Well, don't think she won't.
I used to say guaranteed she's not going to fall over.
>> No. I used to say I used to say I guarantee it won't she won't fall over when horses are sedated. than one did.
Now I say I'll pretty much guarantee it.
>> All right, >> stand up. Stand up. Stand up. Stand up.
>> Yeah, you done.
>> You just get your back leg sorted out a bit last. Come on, >> think about it.
>> That's it. Well done. Just put that one back a little bit more. That's it.
>> Okay, I've got very weak back legs.
again.
Good girl.
This is a problem with the two dope I don't swallow.
Wake up a little bit just to swallow it.
Thank you.
Goodness. E. That tastes nice.
>> No, I didn't quite get it thankfully.
That would have been gross.
just got that's fine. Yeah, thank you.
Now the glamour.
So if this had been left, >> uh, I mean, >> possibilities of what could have happened, >> should probably clear it herself eventually.
All right, that's all right. All right, all right. Um, >> but she'd be in a lot of discomfort.
>> Yeah. and and and it's possible she wouldn't clear it and then that would mean you know well ultimately she wouldn't be able to eat >> because you can't swallow. Um and the other reason for not leaving it a long time is you got a load of sort of obstructed stuff in the esophagus. It's not very good for the lining of the esophagus.
you know, it sort of makes it a bit sore and you can in theory get it scarred and then you get well almost the opposite of megaros and get like a stricture I reckon you know bit where it narrows cuz it's scarred but >> okay >> I mean quite a lot in there is there >> yeah there is Yeah.
>> It's not like it was a massive feed either.
>> Good girl.
All right.
Let's let it out. Let it out. That's it.
Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
>> It's coming out slowly.
Jeez, pretty well blocked last.
If you would let it just run around the side without getting stressed last be better. But feels too weird for you, doesn't it?
Let's just get that bit in.
>> It's an interesting sound.
>> Yeah.
All right.
There's a lot there.
Okay.
Just pull the tube just back a little bit, please.
Yeah. and keep bit more.
>> Yeah, that's it. Yeah, it's grand.
>> Good girl.
>> Just we're getting quite thick stuff and it's plugging the tube. That's the >> Yeah, it a little bit more.
>> Well, it just if she ideally wanted to run around the side, but she just gets so stressed when it happens.
Come on. Just put your head down. Head down. Come on.
Just pull the tube back slightly.
Thank you. Yep. It's good.
It's running down her nose this side.
>> Good.
That's better.
put your head down.
>> It's running clear actually. Wonderful.
>> Yeah.
Just go. Got it.
>> That looks like it's moved easier.
Okay, good.
just come back slightly.
Yeah, it's good. It's good. And keep it running.
Just come back a little bit.
Okay.
>> All right. Let's go.
Yeah.
We go. We go.
I remember with Hoer when you did put the camera down in he said he was It was down here.
>> Okay, you just again stopped working.
>> You'd think with the amount of water that that would have softened it all by now, wouldn't you?
>> Well, it will be softening it. So, just come back a little bit and just bit plugged.
That's it. Okay.
Um, but it's more at this stage. It's more just the mechanical flushing. So, the water rushing down the tube and flushing it out around it.
Okay, I've got it.
All right, that's well done.
Oh, good girl. You're all right. You're okay.
again.
Is it But then could there be the possibility that she's got food that's been stuck in there for a while?
>> Yeah, it's not possible. I think you probably would have seen Well, I don't know. Maybe you wouldn't have seen any signs of it. I don't know.
>> Well, it's it's not possible, but you can't tell from just doing this. Um uh >> but as we said, it's not going to change the way we manage her. We just need to make sure that she has soft feeds and she's generally eating. Mind you, they they say with mega esophagus, they should eat with at a higher level.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Just cuz it runs down.
>> Same as dogs with it. Feed them from a table.
>> Yeah.
I think this is looking probably all right.
>> This isn't coming down a nose now, is it?
>> No.
>> No, I think we're clear.
>> Yeah.
>> Well, it's got to be going somewhere.
>> Oh, there's some coming down.
>> Okay. All right. All right.
Right.
Okay. Got it.
It's got to be stomach.
Yeah, it's a stomach.
>> Yeah.
>> Good girl. Yeah.
>> Sorry. It's just She just listening >> just listening bubbling and that amount of air coming out.
>> Yeah, that's fine.
Okay.
Apart from anything else if that just hold there. So that's Yeah. That's how far it is to that stomach, >> right?
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Even if it does that, you know, >> and goes around. Yeah, >> that's fine. Right. I'll give us I'll give her some She She's not on beauty, is she?
>> No.
>> Right. I'll give her some be and uh >> have a quick listen to her chest as well. Make sure she hasn't inhaled too much.
>> Best bet and my best to put her back. I mean, she's up here at the moment on grass.
>> Give her a bit of time to recover stable overnight.
>> Uh She's normally out, is she?
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. I mean, I'd wait till she's like, you know, 100% round. That's going to be a good couple of hours.
>> Give her a very, very sloppy feed.
>> Yeah.
>> If she eats that, all right, put her out.
>> Put her out.
>> Y.
>> Okay.
>> And if she doesn't >> If she If she doesn't eat it, >> she doesn't eat it, I'd probably keep her in with a feed in front of her.
>> Right. Okay.
>> Oh, y dog.
Poor baby girl.
Soak you a nice feed.
She might She might have lost a calorie or two now.
She is in We do call that a fat camp.
Um going to be very sore.
Should I give a beat for a couple of days?
Is that sounds okay? Just listening to see whether she's you can hear any fluid bubbling. All right, >> she's breathed in. Um, but I can't can't hear any.
>> Good less. Good girl.
>> And that heavy breathing, you'd expect that?
>> Well, not really. No, not not necessarily. No, no. Um, uh, but I think I think it I think it must be stress. I mean, it's quite it'd be too if she had inhaled stuff, >> you'd expect to hear it on the on the lungs and so I I think it was just the stress of it really. Yeah. Yeah. Right.
Um >> bringing Yeah.
I'm going to give her some um I wanted to go on to antibiotics, but the one I'd normally give her, I can't because she's been sedated. Um, so I'll just give her a shot of penicellin >> and then leave you some powders to put in is really hopefully she's prophylactic >> because she's at higher risk of getting a chest infection. Um, because if she has breathed any of it in >> obviously it's not going to be best place for it in >> Exactly. Yeah.
>> So what a fiveday course of antibiotics.
Yeah.
>> And and give her a be for a few days.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
I've given Yodel a couple of hours as Sam suggested. I'm pleased to say that her breathing is back to normal.
So, I've just done her a really sloppy feed here.
She's not so keen on it at the moment, but it is quite warm.
I'm just going to let her tuck into that or not as the case may be.
I think what I'll do is pop her back up with her sister cuz I think probably grass is the best thing for her to have right now.
So, she's going to feel a little bit sore for a while, but she has had some beaut.
Breathing is a little bit labored again.
Wondering whether we're actually better to keep you in the stable overnight.
So, she's very happy to have her back, but I don't think I'm happy with your breathing.
I think we'll pop you in the stable with your sloppy feed and then you can tuck into it as you feel able to. will not give you any halage because I think your esophagus is going to be quite sore and I think that would be quite irritating.
There we go. Sweetheart, you stop and rest in Uber's box for the night.
It's the box that never has any halage.
It can be the box of the sloppy feeds.
At least you can rest for the night cuz I say don't like the sound of your breathing. Still a little too labored for my liking.
So you rest up and we'll see you in the morning.
That's Yodel's trademark. She does love to scrape her teeth on things just like Fema used to. Her mom.
Right. Good night, sweetheart.
The morning after and Yoda is looking a lot brighter than she was last night.
She's got a proper sloppy breakfast with her antibiotics in, but she's not very keen to eat it at the moment, and she's still been coughing quite a bit this morning.
So, she's just going to stop him for now.
Once she's polished off her breakfast, she can go and join Speesh back up on Drumy's driveway.
Bought Yoda out. She's finally done a dropping in her stable. She's finished off her breakfast. She's had a little bit of a soaked tailage.
She's still been doing a fair bit of coughing this morning.
So, I've brought her out just to see if she wants a pick of grass.
And for Yodel to not eat grass is quite unusual, but as I say, she is going to be very sore.
What's coming? All sorts of noise over there today.
Here we go. You going to try? That's it.
And I think we'll give you a clean up because you've still got all the food down your legs, all around your face.
Hopefully make you feel a little bit better as well.
We're just going to have a little walk down the road, have a bit of cow parsley and cleavers.
There's the boys down there. Nero's actually only just got out of bed. He's been flat out in the field for the last couple of hours, but he was moving okay this morning. And Frey and Molly went down to feed them.
You can see he's a bit stiff there just on the right cuz he has only just got up.
Right. Come on, Yodel. Let's go. Get some nice tasty treats.
Uber, have I made your day bringing a lady past?
Hello, boys.
No, she's not joining you.
That's some good grass yodel. Especially as you've been on fat camp and you had a little short grass to eat for the last week or so.
So Yoda's had a bath and a clean up after a walk and I've just brought her back up with Spash because I'd rather that she's out and on the grass. Let me take your head collar off, sweetheart.
So sorry Yoda, you're back to the short grass now.
But she's happy now she's got her big sister back.
Feeling thankful for the love and the happiness we chase. Sun is shining brightly, sky so blue and clear. With every breath I take, I'm grateful you are near. So grateful.
Thank you for the laughter. Thank you for the tears. Thank you for the moments that we hold dear. Thank you for the love. Thank you for the light.
So bright. So the world
