[00:36:18]"I know who grew them.

[00:36:35]By the time the magistrate came to adjudicate the cultivation claim in the eighth month, the garden had become something the village could not ignore.

She spoke to Crease, who had come to argue that the orc was a vagrant and the garden was unauthorized and the wall was an eyesore and the village charter gave the council authority over common land. Magistrate Voss listened to Crease with the particular patience of a woman who had been listening to men like Crease for 31 years.

[00:38:32]She ruled that the strip was unclaimed crown land, not common land, and that the village charter did not apply.

[00:38:42]She ruled that Seraya had established a valid cultivation claim through continuous productive use for more than 30 days and that the claim entitled her to a permanent tenancy under the crown land provision of 1672.

[00:39:01]She ruled that the tenancy could not be interrupted or revoked by any village authority and that any attempt to remove the tenant or destroy the garden would be prosecuted as contempt of her office.

[00:41:30]Who built a wall in four days because a wall was the only thing standing between a garden and 20 men with shovels.

[00:41:45]Every seed planted is a statement.

[00:41:49]Every row tended is an argument. Every marigold in the border is a sentence in a language that does not need translation because the translation is food and food is the thing that nobody can argue with for long.

[00:42:06]Sometimes the most important thing a person can do is build a wall around the thing that is growing.

[00:42:14]Not because the wall will hold forever.

[00:42:18]But because the wall holds long enough for the law to arrive and the law for all its flaws is eventually interested in the thing that grows.
