Lenovo V15 not charging - IT8227VG replacement, using boards from ebay for sparesAdded:
Hello way back in this time. We have a nice laptop to repair. This is a Lenovo Ryzen 5 and radio and graphics. The problem in this one pressing the power button dead.
Now this job is coming from a computer business. Let's check the email. The email is pretty interesting.
Is not taking charge or powering one.
The fuse on the battery was resolder on the laptop. So I think it may be a motherboard fault or some sort.
Is this something uh you can help with?
I mean I can but it's not making sense.
The fuse on the battery was resoldered.
I mean the fuse was burned. Okay, that's a battery issue. So the battery it's locked but the laptop should work should come on and work on the charger. Then the customer believe it's a motherboard fault. Yeah, because obviously she will work without the battery. I will say let's plug a charger and see what he's doing.
But you see the people are learning. You see they are replacing the fuse. The problem is replacing the fuse. It will not solve the problem. The battery has to be unlocked.
I think this is the charger.
We have 19 volts, 20 volts. Plug in the charger and the laptop is taking some current. You can see that pressing the power button and nothing happened. Dead. Check that. The current is exactly the same.
Let's open the laptop and let's have a look inside. Yeah, the laptop has screws. Just give me like one minute.
Yeah, it is open. We have a seal on the board. We have some liquid damage here, but otherwise it's looking fine.
Yeah, indeed. Someone work there.
But like I said, we don't need a battery. This bit is broken.
Disconnecting the battery.
And without the battery. No, it's not coming on.
Okay, let's check the main power rail.
The main power is present.
So the main power rail I'm assuming is here 0 volts and here we have 20 volts. Yeah, let me lower the voltage 19.
So the main power is present. You can see that. Yeah. 19.6.
So why this laptop is not coming on?
That's my question.
Pushing the power button, but nothing happened. So the power button is on this flex cable.
We have a BIOS battery. Wait one second.
If we are resetting the BIOS, this board should come on by insta, right? So the BIOS battery it's out.
Plug in the power and nothing happened. The is not coming on.
Okay, let me try something. Let me disconnect this.
So, the flex cable is disconnected.
No, it's not coming on.
Okay, let's check the coils.
So, this coil is fine. 84 ohms. This one is fine. This one is fine.
This one is fine. This one is fine.
I mean, everything is looking fine.
Okay, let's plug the charger and try to find the 3.3 on the power button.
So, we have 3.3. Yeah, we do have 3.3.
Check the 3.2.
Are a lot of 3.2 here.
We have another 3.2.
And that's all.
So if we are shorting a 3.2 to ground what will happen?
Anyone knows bad things can happen can happen here.
Uh nothing happened.
Huh?
Let's do something else here. Let's press the power button and see if anything happened.
So we have the ground there.
And we are looking for a track of 3.2 volts.
This 3.2 is not even present anymore.
Okay. Unplugging the charger.
Plug in the charger back. Good.
And here we have 3.2. Pressing the power button is not going to zero. Okay.
Then on the other side we have 3.2. Pressing the power button going to zero. Check there. You can see it's going to zero. Yeah. So the power button it is good.
Hard to say what is the problem. BIOS chip. We have no voltage on the BIOS chip.
Oh, one second. Actually, we have we have 1.8 volts on the BIOS chip. So, how this laptop get messed up? Because it's not starting. Everything is fine.
I mean, can be some bias issue. But let's have a look here. Let's see what do we have here.
Okay. So someone work here and it's not me definitely someone else work. So let me understand after this battery repair actually battery is good.
Let's push some current into the battery.
Uh we need plus battery like 7 volts plus here. Let's see if we can push current.
We can check that. So the battery is good actually.
So not sure if they fix it just by resoldering the fuse.
Yeah, the battery is charging. Check that. I can raise the current to like 3 amps. The battery is charging fine.
Okay, they fixed the battery, but the laptop is not doing anything.
You're like 19 and the laptop is not coming on.
Pressing the power button, nothing happened. This is some kind of EC chip issue because it's not charging. Also, where is the EC chip? Here under the Wi-Fi card. No, it's not here.
And here we have some coils.
Now I seen the 3.3 is present.
But what about the 5 volts?
So here 5 volts is present. Yeah, but this 3.3 is not present.
Pressing the power button, we have the light. Here we have the light.
taking the 3.3 we have no light.
So when I call 3.3 we have the light here you can see it but the current is not changing nothing happened.
Okay, let's pay attention on that circuit here. It should be I enabled pin and we have to find that enabled pin.
So the 5 volts it's working because they enable.
Okay, that looks dodgy. But anyway, here is like 19.
The enable pin must be here somewhere.
Probably here.
This one? No, not this one.
This one? No, this one. No, this one has 5 volts. No, this one. No. So, where is the enable pin?
I have no idea where is the enable pin.
Okay. And this one. One second. This one we have here zero.
Here we have 19. So, this is a divider here.
And they have 18.7.
Then not sure what is here. Probably here is the LDO. So here is 3.2 LO.
Then I'm not sure what is here.
I'm assuming is the enabled. Oh, no. No.
Maybe here.
Not sure how we can do it.
No, here is ground.
They put the enable pin next to in uh 19 18 18.7 you think?
Let's um let's try it. So the battery is plugged, right? Great. So we have like 3 volts 3 volts uh plus so the 5 volts is still working. Check that. Yeah. So the 3.3 when we are coming here with 3 volts it's working. Check on the screen. 3.1.
Wait a second. But we are coming with 3.1. Okay. That's weird.
Um then here not sure what is here. 3.1 H weird.
Then this one. This one is doing nothing.
So which is the enable pin then? Quil is cracked. Check here. We have a crack co.
Wow.
Which is the enable?
This one.
3.3. Yeah, that's the enable. This one.
So when I coming when I'm coming with 3.1 is taking out. Look, I can lower the voltage. It's taking out 3.3. So this is the enable.
This one.
The only problem is No, it's not here.
It's here. The only problem is it's taking like 220 milliamps.
That's the That's the problem.
3.2. Yeah. Yeah. That's the one.
That's the one. This is the enable. This one.
But it's taking 200 milliamps.
Yeah, 220 millia. So something is getting mad hot when I'm coming with current there likely the AC chip probably but let's see.
So you have the thermal camera current here and 200 milliamps and we can't see anything.
How is possible? Nothing is getting hot.
Of course, it's not making sense.
Wait, wait. Something here. You can see it. Something here is where? Let me unplug this cable.
Unplug your cable. Let's take it. Yeah, same. Um, on the other side probably is the AC chip. Yeah, I don't know what to say.
So the AC chip is keeping off that power supply because the AC chip is not reading the power button.
And because the AC chip it's also not charging. I believe it's a AC chip issue.
Okay, let's take the board though. Let's see what EC chip we have there. For a second I said uh you know what? I'm not going to fix this. But I have a feeling I have this CC chip and I think I have it on my box. Yeah.
And the board it's out. And the board is untouched. Check here.
It's like brand new. I can see the shape of the AC chip. Can you see it? Yeah.
There.
That's the AC chip.
Taking the foil out.
and check that we have the AC chip.
Yeah, great. Let's have a look.
And that's the AC chip.
Remember the AC is getting hot when we are enabled the 3.3.
I mean it's strange because the AC chip is not actually shorted because I will see the I will see if the AC chip is taking is short. I I will not have the LDO power supply on but LDO power supply it's on but yeah the AC chip is not reading the power button and is not charging the battery.
So let's have a look for IT8227 in my box.
All chips from here are brand new. So maybe we can find one like this one.
It no it's not this one. The thing is I don't want brand new because it is possible need to be programmed.
So I one with a program inside 5126.
Nice. Not this one.
Okay, let me try to find the chip on on a board. Maybe I have a board like this.
Okay, we have one. I can only hope it will get programmed by itself because otherwise can't program this chip.
Let's remove the original one first.
Wait, this chip is not even straight.
What happened to this chip? Check here.
Huh?
Do you think I uh I remove it and then solder back?
8227 128 and the original one is the same VG.
It is VG. It is. Yeah.
Okay. Let's remove the EC chip.
We need like what? like 400Β° 420 hot water.
Yeah. One rosin flux here.
Ross in here and on the other board.
Perfect.
Pin number one here. Great.
I want to preserve the solder balls if I can.
Okay, you know what? Let's go to four 460.
It's taking too long and the chip it's out. Check there the solder bolts. Check there. Check there.
Check there. Huh? Perfect. Yeah, we don't need re bowling.
We don't need rebulling anyway.
But that's how you take a chip out.
Yeah. All solder balls are equal. Okay, that's how you do it.
Then we have this chip. Let's take this chip out.
This chip I want to push it down.
That's what I want to do with this chip.
We go. Yeah. Okay.
That's what I want to do. You're right.
Yeah. I don't want solder balls on this chip.
Great.
And now we can move this chip here after we clean it. Yeah.
I mean everything looks perfect. We have few solder bolts here and that's all.
The chip is looking like brand new.
Yeah, definitely it's a brand new chip.
Let's solder the chip. Pin number one here.
Good. We have solder balls. We have broin. Everything looks fine.
G position somewhere here. Yeah, the position is important.
I don't want to screw it up.
I mean, I can screw it up. And we can uh resolder without solder balls.
But if we have solder balls, why not?
No.
Check there. The chip is moving. You can see it. Yeah.
Perfect.
So, this should be it soldered perfectly in place.
Well, the question is still there. It will work cooling down the board.
Good. We need a charger.
So, plug in the charger.
300 milliamps kind of like a fixed amount of current from what I seen 3 free free okay what is taking that current the easy uh no really the AC chip is taking some current but the CPU is coming on.
I forgot the BIOS battery here. Yeah, it's warm. It's not hot.
I'm not sure what should I say. I mean, the CP is coming on, but that's not helpful.
So, the 3.3 is present. Check that. You can see the 3.3 present. The 5 volts is present.
But the board is just stuck. Is stuck.
It's taking 330 milliamps. And that's all.
It is charging. Wait, we have some light here now. You can see it. Yeah.
Yeah. The CPU is super hot. I mean, it is a change. It looks like it's alive, but it's not good enough. Plug in the charger. And of course, it's not charging.
Nah.
Nah. Has to be programmed.
That sucks.
So, what we are doing?
Yeah, the heat sink is hot.
Not sure if the fan is spinning.
Nah, the phone is not spinning.
So is wrong firmware on the AC chip.
But basically, this can be programmed with SVOD using the keyboard connector, right?
I think I think we should try it. Huh?
Um, okay. It's not working. No, it is busy.
Um, we can't we can't do it.
It's not working. I can't connect to the chip.
I believe you know what? I believe actually my chip is faulty.
So, I want to solder back the old chip and try one more time.
So, what do you think about that?
Let's solder the chip back.
Hard? Nah, it's not hard.
No, we still have the solder balls there.
So, we just have to pay attention to preserve the solder balls.
In order to preserve the solder balls, we need rosin.
Let me heat up the chip.
Great.
Now, let's take the chip out and the chip it's out. Check there the solder bolts.
Huh?
What do you think about that? Check the solder balls.
skill right. Yeah, definitely here is looking fine.
So, we are soldering back this chip.
Come on. Just see there. Yeah, it is hard to hold the ship. Solder balls over the solder balls.
He's running away.
Okay, maybe now.
Yeah, like that. Good.
Now we are fine.
And the chip is moving. Check that. You can see the chip moving, dancing.
Yeah.
Cool. So, we solder back the old chip.
Let's cool down the board.
Okay. So, we cool the board. Let's plug the charger.
Maybe now it's working.
No, I say like before like 400 milliamps. Exactly like before. Yeah.
Let's see.
No, it's not working.
He's not working.
So, we are like one week later and they decide to buy a board from eBay and send it here.
So the board is here, but soon I I seen the board and I seen the wire here.
This looks like, you know, one of my jobs.
Then I checked online for uh the board and I found it. Now this is a big coincidence because the location from where the board is coming, there is the guy who sent me the job lot with with motherboards for repair. So, the board was sold like, okay, working order, but has liquid damage. Anyway, we don't have to replace the board. Yeah, probably it's working because I fixed it.
But we have to take the EC chip and move the EC chip on the customer board.
But eBay, it's a very small place, huh?
Yeah. All what we need is the is the EC chip. Let me grab the customer laptop.
Now, let's quickly replace the EC chip one more time. So this is the original one.
Uh you remember we have to preserve the solder balls, right?
Good. What about the new one? Is the same?
Yeah, it's the same.
We need some liquid rosin.
Pin number one here.
480Β°.
Let's take the chip out.
And the chip is out. Check that there.
Perfect solder balls, huh?
What do you think about that?
Great. Now, let's take this out.
Perfect. Check that solder balls. Huh.
Let's solder the chip on this board.
We have to match the solder bolts like that.
Good.
And the chip it is solder on place. You can see that it's moving. Great.
But the question is it will work or not.
Let me cool down the board.
We need a charger.
Plug in the charger.
And everything is looking fine. Let's see if it's charging.
The plug in the battery and plug in the charger.
120 milliamps. 2 amps. Check that. So the laptop it is charging fine. Great.
And we have the charging light here. You can see it. Let me put the board back quickly.
Okay. We put few things back. Uh let's plug the battery.
Charger.
Now let's try to power on this laptop.
The charger is plugged in. Charging.
Good.
Uh pressing the power button and the laptop it is coming. Go and check that 2.5 amps. The fan is spinning.
Why we have no picture?
Huh? Caps lock not working.
Why is no picture there?
H I mean it's 2.7 then it's switching 2.2.
to Yeah, check that picture.
I think we all know the answer, right?
Yeah, let's swap the BIOS chip.
It is possible someone try to write the BIOS or something, but we know the AC chip is good.
And the biohip it's out.
Good.
Now we have to remove this bios chip from here.
And the bio ship. It's out.
It's out and gone. Yeah, I found it. I found it.
Then we have to solder this BIOS chip back.
Let me use the solder iron to solder the BIOS chip back.
Good.
solder.
Perfect.
And here.
Great.
Great.
Perfect. Check the H.
So what about now? Huh? It will work because if it's not working, we have a problem.
BIOS battery is back in place.
Pressing the power button and the laptop it is going on.
rebooting and that's good.
We have picture check there. Huh? And it's loading the Windows.
Can't believe. Can't believe it's fixed.
Ha.
We fixed it. I mean, we replaced so many EC chips on this board.
Wait, not enough current.
Yeah, we don't have a fan. And the CPU is getting hot. Let me plug the fan.
The fan is plugged.
The fan should start spinning. And it's not spinning.
We have to follow that.
Good. Come on fan spin.
And it is spinning. Check there. You can see it's spinning. Yeah. Ah, sorry. We have a user there. Yeah, it's working fine. Check there. Fine. Is spinning.
Everything is working great. We fix it.
Fantastic. Fantastic. I'm happy. I hope the customer uh this is a good option when you have to fix a board. Just buy another motherboard like a faulty one or even like this one like water damage and you can take the chips and move whatever you need.
In this case, we move the EC chip and the BIOS chip.
But it was not a BIOS issue. Yeah, this remember the the this board originally was dead was not even charging.
