Long-running film franchises face the challenge of maintaining audience interest through sequels, as repeated installments can lead to franchise fatigue; successful sequels often require genuine innovation and surprise elements to feel fresh, as demonstrated by the mixed reception of Toy Story 5's trailer, which introduced a new villain concept (screens and iPads) but faced criticism for marketing that undermined its premise.

Can We Stop With Star Wars and Toy Story Already?Added:
And I let me not ruin whatever relationship I have with Disney.
>> [laughter] >> But It's okay to to ask questions.
>> Wars? Like nothing about it is >> Period. Wow.
>> It feels at this point like they're just continuing to like fork in the big money and they're using whatever IP they can wrench out of this thing that is now 50 years old.
>> Mhm. And there's so much money and energy that could be devoted to new ideas.
Yeah. Sorry. Is that >> [laughter] >> Well Do you feel that way about like Toy Story 5 which is coming out this summer also?
>> Sure do. Fifth install. Okay. Okay. So you're >> and it pissed me off. Oh, wow. See, I feel like most people saw that trailer and were like, okay, maybe they've got you know, having the iPad be a villain in Toy Story 5 is at least a fun new idea. Yeah.
The trailer starts I'm like, oh, how do they how do they make this feel new?
This is the fifth installment in this movie which has been around the franchise now has been around for like decades. Oh, like 30 years? Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. And as soon as they let me know in the trailer that the villain is the iPads and screens and how screens are stealing kids imagination.
Mhm. I said, all right, well then they aren't allowed to market this film in any way that would give screen content to kids.
>> [laughter] >> Otherwise, what's the point? Otherwise like So then I was just pissed. You're asking for purity in marketing which is never going to happen.
>> Toy Story 5 stuff for kids screens. Oh, yeah. Like Toy Story 5 game for your iPad. Thank you.
>> [laughter] >> Anyhow.
Yeah. So I just didn't like that. I also think that Toy Story 3 is the perfect movie. Stop while you're ahead.
>> Mhm.
Yeah, I mean >> so good. Toy Story 4 though like I so I have kids so I like with the right in the wheelhouse for that. Like again, better than it had any right to be. Like when they keep making these sequels that feel like they're actually satisfying you're like, okay. It's kind of like when they made Fast Five like in the Fast and Furious franchise I'm like, I didn't think we need that and then it turns out to be great.
>> That's the [laughter] thing. Every now and then they can find a way to surprise you. Wesley Morris's review of Fast & Furious 5 Okay. was part of the submission that got that man a Pulitzer for criticism. And well-deserved in every possible way.
