Wood carving involves translating two-dimensional designs into three-dimensional objects, requiring careful attention to wood grain direction, tool selection, and progressive depth creation; artists must balance artistic vision with practical considerations like wood thickness and structural integrity while using techniques such as carpet tape for temporary mounting and diagonal chisel movements to prevent wood splitting.

Benjamin, how goes it, friend?
I'm sure time.
Oh, you're welcome. Um, I had really intended for it to happen 12 hours prior and I pushed the wrong button. It happened at midnight.
Um, so I hope it still catches some traction. It was I I wanted to It It was like the AI took it from the um from the live stream and um yeah, I thought it was a brilliant clip and so I wanted it to be longterm on the channel. I didn't want it to disappear in the shorts uh world, you know.
Well, I really do appreciate you.
I lost my wallet uh day before yesterday. I didn't have my wallet all day yesterday. I didn't leave the house.
Oh, I absolutely have to. I absolutely have to. Um, is there something that traditionally would be able to show both the front like the bottom and the top like a way of display? Maybe a mirror and maybe an elevated thing. Originally I thought about maybe something wall mounted with like a glass front and maybe glass shelves. Maybe maybe what Hey Ro, what's going on man? All the superstar artists are here. Wow.
Love it. Love it.
Absolutely stunning.
Stunning.
Every day I walk by them and just so honored.
I hope this um hope this doesn't kill my I'm going to put my mic in right here next to the tang.
Yeah. So, it's been an eventful few days.
I have had some of the most rewarding conversations that I've had on YouTube over the last few days.
It's um I'm so honored.
I'm so honored.
Let's see what we're getting to. Let's see what we're getting to.
I'm thinking of I had this piece uh from the spalted whatever that fell in my backyard and I started carving this out of it.
And so I thought I'd give a shot at that. And I'm going to try to make it into like a maybe a hair piece. I don't think I can make a actual comb.
Um or I thought a dagger might be cool, but I don't want it to be, you know, it's a little aggressive. You know what I'm saying?
If y'all will humor me for just a few seconds, I'm going to pull you up on my feed um so that I can see the chat without bending over and giving you a poor view of the work.
Scoo doo, how are you?
Rob over there. depression talks gives such a pleasant greeting because his voice is so nice.
I always uh sort of think of it when I greet certain people like I want to give them that same kind of warmth that I feel uh over there at Rob's chat.
So, I hope I'm pulling it off.
Caleb, what's good? Taking a break from work. Word is bone.
Gosh, what time you go in? Scoot and get that off all together. And I think I really enjoyed when I had when I was carving and things were just down like that.
Um I think that's how I'm going to do this one. I'm going to go back to the um method I got from I think it's Mike is making stuff who said put down some carpet tape and stick it down.
It comes off pretty easily, but it sticks really well. So, I'm going to utilize that little piece of brilliance.
Um, clean the surface a little bit first, though.
My mic.
So, sorry. I didn't meant to hurt you.
Never meant to hurt you. I put you over here on my arm.
What could go wrong?
Just bring these shot towels over.
Did I find it yesterday? Uh yeah, yeah, yeah, Caleb, I did that. Uh that awesome camera. That was dope. You're just popping in for a minute. Oh, okay. Well, I'm glad to see your school. you know, h I'll be over at the deck uh today as well if you if you get bored later where Oh my god.
Okay, carpet tape was not looking like carpet tape for a second.
So peep black the surface.
Well, who do we have here?
Well, my friend, we have a gentleman known as Quz does it.
And we should be making the things today.
My wife has an appointment.
I am going to take her to because I don't trust the tire on her car.
And um I'm going to get that thing replaced today. I was washing her car yesterday evening and I noticed that um she had a bubble on the side of her tire developing and that's a blowout in the making.
So needs to go to her appointment and I need her to get there safe.
I will warn you though, if you are going to use carpet tape on a wooden surface, um, run on down to Harbor Freight and get you one of them $15 heat guns.
They'll make it a breeze to get it off.
brief.
I just peel that.
Stick it in place.
Think that's a I wonder if I can get you slightly better.
Let's try a little more that way.
A little better. Dang it. That would be ideal.
Let's do this.
Don't leave. I'm just going to flip you.
Sorry. You're going to have to look at me for about two seconds. There we go.
Now, that ought to afford me some ability to zoom.
I'll go up some.
Bring it down some.
This is the part, Caleb.
I need that device.
That magnificent thing.
Think I'm gonna move the whole apparatus a little bit.
Meanwhile, look at this junk in my corner shop.
So, oh snap, I don't have the tools I was thinking about.
Got some stuff.
This, this, and that.
Hold on, hold on, hold on. need more little chisels.
I want want to carve this, but I want some of these I've not used.
So, all of this is highly experimental right now.
I've got to make a line here pencil.
I'm going to reach out to that kid I had the conversation that young man I had the conversation with last night and see if he'd like this channel promoted.
I don't know if he would or wouldn't.
So, I'm going reach out to him and see.
Courageous guy.
Sounds silly. I was a little proud of him.
I'll see.
I hope that doesn't sound pompous.
One of the things I have to be careful about with this particular thing is I don't want to go as thin as that in this area. So, I have to be sort of careful about not I'm also going to use I think I'm going to use my round mallet for this one. I think it's hidden up here.
I think it might be a little bit more controllable if I have to change grain sides like this cuz I I can't flip it.
That's the one negative of the uh carpet tape is I have to go to the other side of the table if my wood grain changes direction or I have to do this.
And this is good practice. So, I'm going to do it.
I'm the last person who needs an afro pick.
The last person maybe I have a beard pick.
Send me beard pics.
Jokes.
Sorry camera.
Bouncy.
A little bit bouncy. It's a little bit rock and roll.
Quite chattery. Quite chattery.
Let's pause for the calls. Send some respect to the chat.
Scoop's getting old. All right, Scoob.
Have a great one. Gage, pump us like a caddy. Wump us. All the youngest don't want the handle to beat the flow and the mama gentle fellow. What?
How's everybody really doing? What's good? Wild and way back. Boom.
Yeah. Doing Superman.
I didn't even mean for it to sound like a punt.
I know a guy who says Cattywampus.
He's got all Cattywampus.
And he's the only guy I think I ever heard say that. I wonder if it's a common phrase.
Feel like I could use it.
I need people to know what I'm talking about.
This is the kind of thing I usually say and then I realize I lost sound 15 minutes ago.
I'll take great for 500. All right.
Kevin with the right answer. Hey y'all.
How you doing, Mr. Kevin? Good to see you this morning. If you walked in and spoke, I apologize if I didn't see it and speak back.
Okay.
Throw a pair of gloves on real quick.
to see you this morning. Thank you for the kind words about my truck. Much appreciated. Oh man, you and I, Kevin, have done nothing but exchange kind words. I appreciate you, but it's a meaningful thing.
I'm going to bring this down both side. This is scary for me when I when I went on um a moment ago did see I think Rob's on live if you're interested know where depression talks and I think also So maybe I think I saw lions online.
Well, if I bore you, you got some good options.
You got some good options. I think that needs to go.
I don't want to be one.
Don't want to be the one.
I don't want to be the one. Baby, don't want to be the one.
I want to be the one.
told you she just kind of direction.
Nothing wrong with that.
Every single thing.
The evidence of that.
Watch and wait.
Change is going to happen regardless.
Why not be a part of that change?
Not guide that change.
I was warned by somebody about spaing.
Be careful. in school.
I only say it may have been telling me careful about these parts right here where they may be sketch.
Now going to start pulling this screw. move right here to brighten these fingers.
Now here where it's always a little weird for me three dimensions versus two Drawing. You draw what you see.
What you see and sort of carving what you understand.
The weird thing is it's fishing of downhill and uphill.
Hell of a game changer.
Please understand that I'm I'm trying to separate them without accident writing them too much too extreme.
Probably cursed myself a little bit by choosing the spalted woods because it's going to show lines that are going to simulate shadows.
And it's also going to be more difficult to distinguish that Maybe man, those knuckles are Yeah, this is this should be the high point by quite a margin.
I don't want to get too thin.
Let's do something.
So, I am going to purposefully make this a little bit better hands than what original is, even though I'm scaling it very similarly.
Um otherwise um mostly because this is going to be too thin I believe and uh I want it to be ultimate.
Hey Kelvin join the chat. Join the mallet warriors and upgrade. I know.
This here is a beard.
That's fine. Thank you, sir. I appreciate it.
I appreciate it.
Homie pulled up, man. It's like uh I don't know. It's weird. It's like 10 people come through, but it's like it feels like almost everybody at the same time. You know what I mean? Like, oh snap, Benjamin's here. Oh snap, Captain's here. Oh snap, Gage is here. Oh snap, Scoo is here. Oh snap, Kevin's here. You know what I mean?
Wild stuff. Rob's here. Like Mr. McCall's here. Like this is a party.
Hey, parties party.
you know, I I watch uh I watch other creators do stuff that I've not done yet.
This is going to sound so weird.
I imagine what it must feel like to do that thing.
Like in my head I'm like, "Oh man, that must feel incredible to have that bowl spinning." And you're just like gently giving it the just like you're making micro movements and just watching it move like clay, slow and clean and pure.
And I get so excited about that feeling.
And then I go over there and I'm like, that's what I'm chasing is that feeling of um clean intended precision just went like I was trying to I'm going to get another chisel.
See, this should be way lower. I don't know if I can do it.
And I'm not going to go way lower, but I'm going to try to incrementally go lower.
Exaggerate it a little bit because again, I'm be thicker, but I want to give the illusion.
Sorry for blocking.
a lot more intense pulling a chisel towards you. You know what I'm saying?
You think I don't know singing this time for you something.
I hope you think the church My brain just really enjoys the dopamine to figure it out.
When it learns it well enough to do it without me, I won't cloud like I get to serve.
Not quite there yet.
If you guys are not yet subscribed to Benjamin Winkle's channel, I would urge you to do so.
He is got some really good stuff coming up.
going to be doing some classes from what I understand and I can't think of anybody better to learn from.
I am going to take those classes when they become available.
So here, just going to do a little cut towards us.
And to control that from losing it and coming towards us, I'm going to slice down at this angle. Right. Pressure this way, pressure that way.
That way, if we miss, we jump off the wood like I just did.
Don't nobody move. Don't nobody get hurt.
I thought these knuckles are going to be a lot ambitious for me. Particularly way the light is set up and the way that depth is set up.
I may have to do a version of it. It's not true to the anatomy of this particular piece.
I am disappointed about that.
I think that's just I go for that level of depth. I'm going to make this thing too.
I I do miss a little bit the the knives that I made and that I sharpened and sort of changed.
Um, but I'm still not mad at these little cheapo off Amazon. Literally the cheapest set I could bought.
17 books.
Built the crap out of them.
Sent them out into the world. See how they These are not a bad starting place.
Now I have to get into sort of interpretive part of this how true be how effective visually it is where it's at now without going everly further.
Don't breathe.
Feels like maybe the only one that does.
I'm going to ask y'all to forgive me for one quick second.
Hey Mike, how you doing? See you later, Gage, if you're dipping.
Oh no. I'm sorry to hear about that, Gage.
That sucks.
Oh.
Hey, Mr. Number Five. How you doing?
Oh, man.
Oh, that makes me a little sad.
Um um sorry. Uh what I was going to say was give me a quick second. I'm going to uh have to put my mic down and check on my wife about getting her appointment real quick.
Right. Right. Right.
Okay.
So, I got a good half hour with y'all if that's okay.
Hey, Pat. What's good? What's good?
Brandon says, "I've never used rubber gloves in this wedding."
Oops.
Um, I use rubber gloves for a couple of reasons. Um, one is I do have really thin skin about as thin as these gloves. So, if I just get slightly poked, I can bleed a lot.
And whereas I'm a contractor, that doesn't bother me in the slightest.
If people are looking at my hands, it does bother them. So, I take a little extra precaution to make sure that I don't bleed on my work and that I don't freak people out uh who might not be as um immune to blood as I get it.
Um but also not protect my hands like I got contract but who wants to see that? You know what I'm saying?
Wood lot. Wood lot hat in this building.
So anyways guys, I got about another 15 minutes, 20 minutes or so uh before I got to run my my lovely wife to the appointment.
But maybe we'll flip this thing over.
See what we can get going on the other side of it. Right now, I think I'm going to have to give this side a little bit of a little bit of a rest. I get too um is the right word. Um, there's a little mathematician, the geometry in my brain that doesn't want to rest until these are exact duplicates of one another. And it'll it'll it'll make me accidentally get down that thin down that thin.
So, pause it a little bit. Wait, little bit of a pause. At the same time, we got to keep this downward slope strong enough to give the illusion there. It's the same amount of proportion there.
Shout out to old books and pal who uh taught me really early on in my uh chisel game um that when you get to a circumstance where it feels like you might tear out, start going diagonal.
Watch this chisel.
That way.
Roll it out.
Little bit more that way.
Blow out.
They have community at some points of these you I have to say okay wait does it look finger that's Yes.
Chill.
No.
Got to adjust.
like feels good.
Like what I wanted to be able to handle. That's like poison ivy to me now.
That's poison ivy.
Now, this is the side that I'm going to be carving next. So, got to get as much of this off of here.
Gloves come in handy cuz they do better on pulling this off than skin does.
Oops. See what I say? See what I say?
much of this off the top as I can. I don't want my chisels to get all gummy.
Chisel the same.
Pull the gloves off with this one.
That's a tough way to start a morning gauge.
It's common for tanners to develop that allergy.
Possibly I have recently um develops some kind of allergies.
For me generally, it didn't matter how pollinated the hair was carry an impact on me.
Man, I'll be sneezing like crazy. It's about it though. I don't get broken out or anything, but I can't can't lay in almost any grass.
My grass touches myself, it'll break out.
brushing and ripping lots of it by hand and getting wet and softening it. Yeah, I would imagine that would do it. It's like weird that it does though.
How do you overcome it though? You just have to glove up extra or do you just have to avoid that material all together?
It was like poison ivy. I would imagine.
But I don't know how essential it is.
You know, either I realized last night that we're a bunch of dudes that basically take turns hanging out in each other's garages. Oh, that is 100% it.
100% it.
And I don't remember who I was telling this to the other day, but it's kind of a dream of mine to get get to get enough money set aside, however, to take a summer and just pack my truck with a handful of hand tools and go visit other people's shops.
have shop day with them in their shops.
Like I think it's smoke I was talking to about that like that seems like the most fun to me.
out of every time I'm somebody else's shop.
Big shops, small shops, medium size shops, wood handworking shops, machine shops, CNC shops, like outdoor chainsaw carving area. Like I want to be in those spaces.
That would be says garage in the wall. Absolutely, man.
Says I had to wear gloves every day before I retired. Mess with too many chemicals.
I didn't get what the chemical they call chemical blasters. Woo!
Any blisters sounds like Oh, there was once a fellow named Cob is just busting robs again. Oh, you can visit my shop and the ecosystem is only a couple hours away.
Totally will.
Totally will.
I accept invitations totally cuz I want to like I want to uh I shop invites.
So let's see where we're going is finger here.
Here that may be Don't like this one.
Okay, we need to get Lions to the States to join West on the shop tour. Telling you, man.
And yo, you know what I'm saying?
Um, I do understand though that sometimes people's um, it's also, you know, like you said, garages in homes, you know what I mean? Most everybody lives in their location as well. So, I get where some people that'll be a vibe check.
Stay there. That's kind of up to us.
But also I I would welcome people here. You could also come visit here too.
Me and Kevin talked about that once.
We're not super far from each other.
Let's say I'm probably closest to Rusty and then after that probably Alvin or Smoke.
Smoke might also appear to be in closer proximity.
Florida family there.
Make soon as I get my money right.
That would be a cool time with the homies.
I don't know if you guys ever play like black top pickup basketball, but that cut that I made just Somebody ever get you the ball in just the right place in just the right time.
Oh, let me rain this real quick.
Throw it up.
That's a feeling.
session about this and blow it and blow away.
Not quite there.
So deep.
This one is super deep.
Relatively speaking.
Well, sorry you guys, but seems like time for the day or for the moment at the very least up. Um, thank you for everybody that came out.
Um, in particular, thank you for those of you in the chat.
Keep things going and the algorithm believes something interesting is going on.
And uh, yeah, thanks.
Y'all, when I come back, I'll either be out there on that deck working or I'll be back circumstantially.
decided by I'll go with this car tire.
>> See y'all later.
You so much for hanging out with me.
I appreciate all of you. I think I lost my thing a minute ago, but I appreciate all of you. Thank you so much.
See y'all though later.
One time.
