5 Horror Scenes That Totally Blindsided MeAdded:
You can watch horror for years and think you've seen every trick in the book and then a film hits you with something you genuinely didn't see coming.
[screaming] >> And before we get into this video, folks, I do want to say that there will be spoilers. Hi, my name's Darren and welcome back to Only Sands. There's a very specific kind of horror moment that sticks with you. Not just because it's scary, but because it completely blindsides you. No big musical builds or anything like that. No obvious warnings, just a moment that lands and then suddenly the film you thought you were watching isn't that film anymore. And these are five scenes that did exactly that to me. First up is Hereditary. This one is a proper gut punch because going into Hereditary, I genuinely had no idea how this film was going to play out. It feels like a slowburn family drama.
Something's off, but it's really sort of controlled. And then you get that sequence. Charlie's having an allergic reaction. Peter panics, throws her in the car, and speeds off trying to get her to a hospital. She's gasping for air, can't breathe, and she leans her head out of the window. And then in a split second, Peter swerves and ahead it's a roadside pole. No cutaway or anything like that. No musical cue, just pure impact and then silence. And what really gets you is what comes next because he just sits there in shock.
Doesn't even turn round. Then he drives home, goes inside, and goes to bed. And the film just leaves you with that. And it's a horrifying moment, an absolute gut punch, as I said. Then later in the climax, Annie, who's completely gone at this point, soarses through her own neck and takes her own head off. And suddenly, you realize that Charlie's death wasn't just shock value. It was setting the tone for everything else.
The whole thing had gone full circle.
Next, a movie that doesn't always hit you as a horror film straight away, but then by the third act, you're completely convinced that it is because, as I said, Bone Tomahawk spends most of its runtime convincing you that it's a western. It's kind of slow and really deliberate, and you really settle into it, and then that final act hits, and it feels like something straight out [music] of an early8s Italian cannibal movie. It's raw and unflinching. it.
It It It's even difficult to talk about.
Deputy Nick is dragged out completely helpless. He's [music] scalped in front of Kurt Russell.
>> Please.
>> NICK, WAKE UP.
>> Turned upside down and then split in two.
>> No cutaway or anything. There's no softening of it at all. And it and it's way too violent for me to even show you here. It just sort of happens and that's what makes it so effective. Doesn't feel like a scene. It feels like something you weren't ready to witness. I remember finishing the movie and just feeling completely empty, like really dry inside, like the film had taken something out of me and wasn't prepared to give it back at all. If you haven't seen Bone Tomahawk, I can highly recommend it. My third choice is something completely different again, which is Sleepaway Camp from 1983. Now, this one's a different kind of shock because honestly, the first time I watched Sleepa Away Camp, I wasn't even sure what I was watching. There were a lot of uncomfortable moments in this film. It it feels very kind of lowbudget. Some of the kills are good, but some of the acting is absolutely shocking. It feels off, as I said, really awkward and a bit strange. And for the most part, feels like a formulaic slasher. And then it gets to that ending. The killer is revealed and you see Angela just standing there completely still holding a seven head.
And then it hits you. Angela isn't who you thought she was. She's actually Peter, her brother, raised as a girl by her aunt. And the way that it's presented really gets under your skin.
That frozen expression.
>> How can it be?
[music] >> That low unnatural sound. and Peter's junk just hanging there. It doesn't feel like a normal ending at all. It feels slightly wrong. And that's why it's become one of the most, I guess, blindsiding moments in horror history.
Now, the problem today is that most people know what this twist is. But if you saw it back then, it was quite the surprise. Back to 2020 now and The Invisible Man. Now, this one, this is a proper oh [ __ ] moment because it comes completely out of nowhere.
>> [music] >> Cecilia meets her sister in this busy restaurant. Everything feels really calm and almost kind of safe. They're talking, trying to fix [music] things, and then suddenly a knife lifts off the table.
>> What?
>> On its own and in one quick motion slashes her sister's throat. And before you can even process it, the knife is placed back in Cecilia's hand. So now she's sitting there covered in blood holding the weapon in a room full of people and there's instant chaos. And what makes it hit isn't just the act, but it's how quickly it turns her into a suspect. It's almost instantaneous. Lee Winnell is one of my favorite directors in horror and absolutely knew what he was doing here. He sets you up to relax and then just pulls the rug completely from underneath you. And The Invisible Man for me was one of the strongest movies of 2020 for sure. And then finally, we have The Mist. And this is one that literally has you shouting at the screen because you can literally see where it's going and you really don't want it to go there. They run out of fuel. They're stuck in the mist. They're surrounded. And then David makes a decision to spare themselves from what's coming. Inevitable doom. It looks like [music] David takes a gun and one by one he kills everybody in the car, including his own son. And then the mist just clears and the military arrive. The rescue was just moments away and he's left there realizing exactly what he's done. And it is quite simply, I think, the most devastating, blindsiding ending in cinema history. And it's the kind of moment that sticks with you for years.
The film didn't actually smash it at the box office at all, but that ending became infamous. And it gave it real legs. People talked about it, recommended it purely because of how bold it was, and the movie just grew and grew after its theatrical run. These are just five horror scenes that have completely caught me off guard and have stayed with me long after the credits rolled. Let me know in the comments what scenes did the same to you because I guarantee there's loads that I've missed. And I'm not saying these are the best. These are just five that have stayed with me.
