Today in this video, folk painting isn't just a type of art. It's a visual language that carries history, rituals, identity.
Here's a deeper look so you really understand it in detail.
What is folk painting? Folk painting refers to a traditional artwork created by local communities, usually without formal academic training. It develops organically within a region and reflects its environment, religious beliefs, social custom, daily life.
Unlike classical or modern art, folk artists is community-based, not individual focus. Their style stays consistent over generations.
Core characteristics. Number one, material and techniques. Natural colors made from turmeric, yellow, indigo, blue, charcoal, black, rice paste, white.
Surfaces.
Walls, mud house, >> [music] >> cloth, paper, floor, rangoli style. Tools, handmade brushes.
Twigs, fingers.
Second, style. Flat, no 3D paper protective, bold outlines, repetitive patterns, symbolic figures instead of realistic anatomy.
Three, themes. Mythology, god epics, nature, trees, animals, sun, moon, festivals and rituals, married and social events.
Major Indian folk painting styles.
Madhubani painting, origin Bihar, made mostly by women, features dense pattern, filling entire space, [music] no empty background. Themes from Ramayana and Mahabharata.
