This video illustrates the importance of seeking second opinions in dental care, as demonstrated by a patient who experienced complications from a root canal and crown procedure, including post-operative pain, infection requiring retreatment, and a poorly fitted crown, ultimately leading to the discovery that the original treatment may have been unnecessary.

Talking about my root canal
Added:So, my root canal was a pretty bad experience. I had just gotten a new dentist. Um, cuz I switched jobs and started with new insurance and yeah, for some reason I ended up at this dentist that was close to my house.
Anyway, um it seems like I was with him for probably about a year or maybe two years at the very most. And he said that this tooth needed and needed the filling to be replaced, but that he had to clean some of the filling out and it was getting too close to the root. And so he said I needed a root canal because when he cleaned it out, he might hit the root.
So I said, "Okay." And we did it. I I'd never had a root canal before. I'd never had any problems with my teeth other than, you know, a cavity here or there.
And he did the root canal.
I had no idea that a root canal involved shaving the tooth down and putting a crown on top. I had no idea what was going on.
Anyway, he does all that and then after he's done, my tooth started to really hurt and I was having no problems with the tooth.
So, I went back in and he said that there is infection and I need to go to an anodonist. So, I went to an endodontist and they had to drill through the crown and go in and clean out the root canal and redo the root canal and then put a filling in the crown.
Well, when I went back to the dentist so that he could review everything, he told me, "You also have a cavity over here that needs to be filled."
And I said, "Okay.
and he wanted to schedule it, but he never touched my tooth.
I have been going to the dentist for years and years since I was little. I had braces. I know what goes on when you have a cavity. They put a pick in the tooth and they fill around and if the pick sticks, then there's decay. He did not touch my tooth. So, I had an immediate red flag pop up.
Um, and I decided to go get a second opinion.
Well, during my search for a new dentist, I decided to contact a dentist that I grew up with.
Um, I don't know why I didn't think to go to this dentist from the very beginning of when cuz I moved to Florida and when I came back, that's when I found this dentist.
I remember now.
Um, but I don't know why I didn't search for the dentist that I grew up with because he was such a good dentist and I'll never forget him. He's now retired.
Um, but I called to see if he accepted my insurance and he did. And so I immediately went there, explained what was going on. He said, "There is absolutely nothing wrong with your tooth. you do not need a field. You do not have a cavity.
So, needless to say, I was very upset and I had the records transferred because something in my gut told me that I did not need a root canal either.
Based on the images, he said, "I don't think you needed a root canal." But that can be opinionbased. He could have just been trying to, you know, make sure that he didn't get too close to the root. I I I think it was, in my opinion, it was uh what do you call it? Associates defending associates, right? He doesn't want to put down another dentist. He definitely probably didn't want to go um defend his comments in court because I was so mad because that tooth was a big problem and I had never had a problem like that.
So yeah, that is my experience getting my root canal. I have a feeling I probably never I don't think I even needed it. Um and if you look real close, you can see that he did the crown wrong. So, not only did he So, my the dentist that I started going to that I grew up with, not only did he say I don't personally think it's not something I would have recommended, but he also did the crown wrong because the crown doesn't cover my tooth. So, if you look Oh, it's not letting me zoom in.
You can see that the crown doesn't go all the way up.
See how a little bit of my tooth is showing? For some reason, it's not letting me zoom in.
But when he did that, the plan was I was going to whiten my teeth. And he said, "I made the crown just a little bit lighter than your tooth so that when we whiten, they'll match." And I remember that specifically. But my ne my now dentist said, "It looks like the you know, maybe you had some gum receeded."
I said, "No, absolutely not. That is how it was when he installed the crown.
So anyway, that is my experience with the crown. The dentist uh that is now retired. I this was years and years ago.
So um I went to my childhood dentist for many years before he retired. We discussed replacing the crown before he retired with a crown that would cover my whole tooth. Um, but I'm just to the point where I don't want to mess with it until it becomes an issue and has to be replaced because crowns aren't cheap.
Number one, and number two, I don't want to mess with something that's not painful or giving me a problem. Um, I kind of wish I would have done it before he retired. The dentist that took that was in the same practice um, I go to now and he's a great dentist. Um, but when you've had a childhood dentist and you grew up with that dentist and he's been such a good dentist for, you know, most of your whole life growing up and then the years leading up to his retirement, you know, you put so much trust and just know that he's going to do a good job. So, I just hope that when it does come time to replace that crown that my now dentist does a good job and I'm confident that he will. But that is the story of my dreaded root canal and crown.
