Inadequate infrastructure development and delayed bridge construction can leave communities vulnerable to natural disasters, as demonstrated when floodwaters destroyed a bridge over the Adonsu River, cutting off 18 communities in Assin South District, Ghana, and leaving residents stranded with disrupted access to schools, farms, and essential services.

Adonsu River Floods Cut Off 18 Communities in Assin South After Bridge CollapseAdded:
We had a very disturbing story from the central region and about 18 communities in the Assin South district of that region have been cut off after floodwaters destroyed a bridge over the Adonso river. The incident has left residents stranded and seeking help.
Central regional correspondent Akwasi Adom has more in the following report.
Residents of about 18 communities along the Adiembra and those stretch here in the Assin South district of the Central region have become stranded. This is due to a river which has extended its banks and leaving residents in a very distressing situation. Let's speak to some residents and find out how they've been affected. Yesterday I came after returning I couldn't cross it cuz the water level was so high and the car couldn't cross it.
I tried using the other bridge through Assin Adadientem.
That one too I wasn't able to cross it. So I have to wait for today.
I was able to cross it.
And this is just the beginning of the rainy season. Last year the same.
As a result of this situation schools in these affected communities have been temporarily shut in order to ensure the safety of both students and teachers.
>> The construction of this bridge on the Adomi river has stalled for over 7 years. Residents are attributing the flooding situation to the failure on the part of authorities to ensure the full completion of this bridge.
And the assemblyman for Homahondomia electoral area is already feeling disappointed. According to him, political actors have always taken the people in this area for granted for far too long.
It took some road users a couple of minutes and under the guidance of NADMO officials to cross the area.
4 to 5 ever since in a year because and when you swim to a bar then I make a deal with I know.
If >> Many farmers are unable to access their farms since their farms have been flooded completely.
The Asin South District has been witnessing or experiencing pockets of flood-related disaster since the onset of the rains. However, the NADMO in the district says it lacks the logistical strength to deal with some of these issues. So, indeed, we have put in mechanism in the place. If there is an issue that will escalate the issues quickly, regional response team will come and run and then assist us.
>> But currently, we don't have the logistics to do that. Yes, please. As at now, we don't have the logistics in Asin South. Several residents remain stranded. The situation could be dire in the fullness of the rainy season.
The only solution to the problem the construction of this bridge. These locals are appealing to government for an urgent intervention.
For the Channel One newsroom, I am Akwasi Addo as in Homaho, Central Region.
