2027 Tesla Optimus Gen 3: Tesla's "End Game" Plan Revealed
Added:Tesla stock just hit $420.
Car sales did not do that. In fact, car sales are down. A robot did that. A robot that has never clocked a single real shift, never earned a paycheck, never once complained about Monday, just did that to the stock price. So, either Wall Street knows something we do not, or Wall Street is having another one of its moments. Let us find out which by looking at what this thing can actually do instead of what this stock chart is doing.
What makes this 50 actuator hand different from every other robot hand out there?
Start with the hand, because this is the one upgrade that's not just marketing speak.
22 degrees of freedom per hand, 50 actuators total across both hands, 25 packed into each forearm.
Tesla mirrored actual human anatomy here, the same setup you have, where the muscles that move your fingers actually live in your forearm and pull on tendons. That is why you can make a fist and still see your forearm flex like you are auditioning for a watch commercial.
Copying that layout means Tesla can build this hand on a repeatable line instead of hand assembling some fragile watchmaker mechanism, one unit at a time.
Compare that to Gen 2, which had just 11 degrees of freedom per [music] hand.
This more than doubles it. 11 degrees of freedom gets you a claw that can grab a box. [music] 22 gets you something that can curl one finger at a time and adjust its grip mid-squeeze, [music] the way you do with a wine glass without thinking about it.
That is the [music] actual gap between a claw and a hand. And it is the real reason this generation earned the Gen 3 name, even though the body underneath is mostly still the Gen 2 upper body.
There are four sensitive tips on every finger now, which is the difference [music] between a robot that picks up an egg and a robot that turns an egg into an omelette by accident. Tesla has shown it holding eggs intact and adjusting tool grip on the fly.
And this was [music] not a one-take demo they filmed 40 times and kept the best clip.
These hands have been running actual 24-hour shifts on the Fremont floor.
Why did the new AI 5 chip go into a robot before it went into a car?
The AI 5 chip taped out April 15th, 2026, with roughly five times the memory bandwidth of the old AI 4. And for the first time ever, a new Tesla chip is going into a robot before it goes into a single Tesla car.
A company that built its whole identity on cars just handed its best new brain [music] to the robot first.
Read into that whatever you want. I know what I'm reading into it.
The AI 5 also runs on [music] the same neural network architecture as full self-driving. Optimus is [music] not learning to see the world from a blank slate. It inherited a vision system trained on millions of miles of real [music] road data from the car fleet.
Every other humanoid robot company on Earth has to build that perception stack [music] from nothing or rent someone else's. Then go collect their own training data from scratch.
Tesla already has years of it sitting on a server somewhere.
Optimus shows up to its first day of work [music] having already cheated off the world's biggest test bank. And honestly, good for it.
Figure AI and Unitree do not get to skip that step. They are out there collecting their own data one careful [music] demo at a time, which is part of why Figure just bragged about hitting one robot built per hour at its Bot 2 facility. A 24-times jump in under 120 days.
That is a genuinely impressive number, and I will give credit where it is due.
But, Tesla is not building [music] robots one at a time and hoping the software catches up later. It already has the software parked in a fleet of millions of cars just waiting to be repurposed for a body with legs instead of wheels.
How does Optimus actually understand what you say to it? Voice runs on Grok built by Elon Musk's other company, [music] xAI.
I'm pointing out because it shows Optimus does not exist alone.
Amused, it sits inside a web of Musk companies >> [music] >> feeding each other data like a very expensive family potluck. The cars feed the vision data, xAI [music] feeds the language layer, and the robot is what happens when both dinners get combined onto one plate.
Earlier demos had an awkward problem here, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. You would [music] talk to it and then wait. And then wait a little more.
The kind of pause that makes you check if the thing froze.
Grok is Tesla's attempt to close that gap because a chat model built for quick back-and-forth is a very different animal than a rigid command parser bolted onto a robot chest.
Whether the lag actually disappears or just gets shorter is something we find out once regular people outside a controlled Tesla event get [music] to talk to one of these.
Is the body itself actually better or just the hands?
The body picked up real upgrades, [music] too. Version 3 runs 37 joints, nine more than Gen 2 using a mix of harmonic [music] and planetary drive systems that absorb the shock of walking better than a plain [music] gearbox.
Overall, weight dropped 22% versus Gen 2.
That weight number [music] sounds boring until you think about what it buys.
Lighter means faster. Lighter means less battery burn per hour of standing around looking busy.
Lighter also means less kinetic energy involved if it [music] ever bumps into an actual human, which matters quite a bit when the plan is to have these things sharing floor space with real employees.
Target walking speed sits at 1.2 m/s, holding balance on a 15° slope. Nobody is winning a race at that pace. That is a relaxed stroll, not a jog.
But compared to the stiff, hesitant shuffle from earlier demos where every step looked like it was one bad sensor reading away from a face plant, this is a real jump.
And a 15° slope matters more than it sounds because a real factory floor [music] is not flat showroom tile.
There are ramps, uneven seams, a stray cable [music] someone taped down and forgot about.
A robot that only works on a perfectly level stage is a demo.
A robot that holds its footing on a slope is a machine.
What is probably coming next for the senses and safety side of this robot?
Nobody confirmed a new [music] battery or a new sensor this week, so I will not invent one.
But follow the [music] logic that is actually on the table.
The AI 5 chip just gave Optimus roughly five times more processing headroom than [music] AI 4, and Tesla already pushes software updates to its car fleet about once a quarter with safety and collision avoidance models bundled into that same overnight pipeline.
If Optimus follows that same cadence, you are looking at three [music] to four safety-relevant software revisions a year with zero hardware changes required.
Meanwhile, the rulebook is nowhere [music] close.
OSHA's current machine guarding standard is built around equipment from the 1970s [music] fixed behind a cage, not something walking past you on the floor.
Historically, US safety regulation for [music] a genuinely new machine category has taken anywhere from 3 to 7 years to catch up after real-world deployment begins. And it typically only moves fast [music] after an actual incident forces the issue.
Tesla is shipping code updates in months. Washington moves [music] in years.
What is it actually doing on the factory floor right now today?
Right now these units are sorting 4,680 [music] battery cells, moving parts between bins, handling delicate items during testing. [music] That part is real, happening today at Fremont and Giga Texas. [music] But Tesla itself says most of this is still learning and data collection, not full productive labor.
That is not a failure. That is exactly where a program like this should be.
Every [music] sorted battery cell is training data for the next version.
Think of it less like a finished employee and more like the new hire everyone is still watching a little too closely. Elon Musk himself said [music] on July 1st that initial production will be extremely slow because everything [music] here is new and building a robot with roughly 10,000 unique parts is nothing like building a car.
That is not hype. That is a man deliberately lowering the bar in public.
Given this program promised 5,000 units in 2025 and delivered a few hundred.
That kind of blunt honesty is worth more to me than another polished demo video.
It tells you Tesla actually knows how hard the next stretch is.
And look, I get it. You have heard big robot promises before and watch them quietly shrink by the next earnings call. I have watched the same thing.
That is exactly why the boring infrastructure matters more than the flashy demos and stuff.
There is a real modular assembly line sitting in Fremont right now. A training supercomputer running actual megawatts and a chip that beat [music] the cars to market.
None of that existed the last time Tesla promised you a Optimus on the market.
Why does Tesla plan to release a brand new design every single year?
Musk says Tesla intends to ship a new Optimus design annually. Same iteration pace as the cars.
Gen 4 has already been mentioned, though nobody outside Tesla has real specs yet.
What makes that possible [music] is that the production line itself was built modular from day one. So, [music] when next year's hardware changes, Tesla is not tearing the whole line down and starting over.
That is a very different bet than a normal factory line built around one fixed product for a decade.
So, where is this actually headed on paper?
Nomura reports Tesla has already raised its Fremont [music] capacity target from 50,000 to roughly 70,000 units a year, with weekly output aiming for around 1,000 units by September 2026.
That is still just the warm-up lap.
The real number sits at Giga Texas, where filings point to a dedicated Optimus factory, 5.2 million square feet, built for up to 10 million units a year once it is fully online, with Gen 4 production expected to start there in 2027.
Long-term, Tesla has talked about 1.5 million units a year across both sites.
Big gap between 70,000 and 10 million, and that gap is exactly where the next few years [cheering] get interesting.
The hands are the flashy part everyone points a camera at. [music] The chip is the part that actually decides whether any of this scales past a factory [music] demo. A great hand with a mediocre brain is still just an expensive claw. This is not a finished product. It is not doing your laundry.
It is not replacing a full shift yet.
But, the hardware here is genuinely a different animal than what [music] we saw in 2023 and 2024.
