Why Editing Your Lawyer’s Contract Creates Legal Risk

[00:00:00]As lawyers, a lot of what we do is in writing. [music] We're literally writers for a living. If you ask me to write a contract for you and I write a contract that has, let's say, [music] five pages, because that's what I think should be written and that's what I think based on my experience is the proper length of a contract. And then you [music] come back to me with your reviews. And when you send me the contract back, the contract has 15 pages. And, you know, you probably got all these beautiful pages [music] and words from Claude or from ChatGPT or from some artificial intelligence source. Then that's not the document that I wrote. And you cannot pretend that I put my name on that document, because I didn't write [music] it. The reverse is true. We cannot just write something and then somebody else put their name on their paper. I don't know of any ethical lawyer in this city that will do that. That's just not something that we are able to do. So, if you want to write your own things, it's fine. But if you are hiring a lawyer, you have to trust that your lawyer is writing what he's writing based on the experience that he has, because it is different that you get a document from some sort of artificial intelligence than, you know, someone that has 500 plus cases, 15 plus years of experience and that, you know, writes whatever he writes based [music] on that experience.
