[00:00:00]tan theta. Everyone uses it, but why is it called tangent? Watch this. Here's the unit circle, radius [music] one. As we rotate the radius, the Y shadow traces sign and the X shadow [music] traces cosine, standard stuff. Now, here's the trick. Draw a vertical line perfectly tangent to the circle [music] at the point 1,0. That line literally touches the circle at one spot. Extend the radius [music] outward into a ray.

[00:00:21]The ray hits that tangent line at exactly one point. Look at the height of that point. That height [music] right there is tan theta. That is why it's called tangent. It's the length of the segment on the tangent [music] line.

[00:00:32]Near zero, tan is tiny. At 45°, the height is exactly one. [music] Past that, it explodes fast. At 90°, the radius is parallel to the tangent line.
