[00:00:20]We are talking next about innovation in democracy, and Professor Achille Mbembe is a historian. He is a political scientist. He is someone who has done a lot of work researching what democracy for Africa looks like.

[00:00:38]Sometimes we make copy-paste systems without thinking, "How do I make this work for me?" So, he's presenting a white paper on what innovation in African democracy looks like. Please help me give a warm round of applause and a welcome to Professor Achille Mbembe.

[00:02:13]>> [laughter] >> It's it's um uh uh uh uh a new one. I mean, I have seen him in action uh few time and uh I'm very happy that uh I was able to witness uh the same energy, the same intelligence, and the same commitment to our continent and to the idea of a common world. He ended with that.

[00:02:42]I was also delighted to listen to President Ruto and to hear about uh the efforts he has been engaged in in making of Kenya uh a place where no African feel like a stranger.

[00:03:03]>> [applause] [applause] >> All that we heard from President Ruto and Emmanuel, we heard it uh yesterday.

[00:03:17]Um the same joy, the same passion, the same energy was expressed yesterday during a pavilion uh the Innovation Foundation for Democracy, the Paris Peace Forum, and uh the International uh Commission for Jurists Kenyan section.

[00:03:40]We held uh at uh another university uh Strathmore University uh not far from here, indeed.

[00:03:50]And what we uh uh bringing to you uh time is in the form of of a book.

[00:03:58]And I won't be summarizing the book here.

[00:04:04]The book contains no less than 60 proposals, which are not proposals for governments, which are not proposals for business, which are proposals for all, beginning with civil society organizations themselves in the full knowledge that uh these days governments, uh business, and civil society and communities have to work together. There's no other way.

[00:04:39]And that we have to um basically invest as we heard this morning in our communities and societies' resources, in their strengths, being inclusive if we are to address the challenges ahead of us.

[00:05:03]I'll end these very quick comments with um one word which came to me as I was listening to the conversation we have had this morning.

[00:05:16]If when it comes to telling the world what Africa is all about.

[00:05:22]I will say it in French because I really haven't found a proper translation in English. I hope that the translators will do their job.

[00:05:32]L'Afrique est une réserve de puissance et une puissance en réserve.

[00:05:41]I believe that that's what I heard this morning, and I would like to leave it at that.

[00:05:47]So, this is the book.
