Pokemon Red Recomp is Out Now! More Nintendo PC Ports
Added:Everybody, welcome back to video game as so they're going to find an exciting video for you guys today that I'm probably going to run as a bonus video.
That is because Gameboy games for some reason never do really good views, but I definitely want to talk about this one because there is now a Pokémon Red static recompilation out that you can download and try out today and it's absolutely outstanding. It does everything it needs to do, nothing more and nothing less and that's always a win when you talk about static recomp. Just so you know, this was made by developer Bryant the boy and he's an absolutely epic job of bringing something like the world of Pokémon Red over to PC with its own launcher and ability to basically be modded to your heart's content. Before we get involved though, do me a huge favor go down below hit like and subscribe and ring that notification bell. Definitely helps us out. If you feel so inclined and want to support the channel, I got a Patreon link down below as well. But let's go with the name Combee for static recomp and get right into this because Pokémon recomps and decomps and PC source ports have definitely been something that a lot of people have been wanting. While there are a few out there, I think everyone wants to live in a world where every single Pokémon game from the eight-bit stuff like on Gameboy all the way through the 32-bit stuff is 100% ported over to PC with a bunch of quality of life improvements, the ability to play however you want, and a robust mod engine because trust me, we have a ton of different Pokémon ROM hacks that is absolutely kind of a thing that has been going on for forever, but if it's easier to make them than having to dig into the actual game ROM and being able to do it via a static recompilation, it's going to allow developers to do it much quicker and much more efficiently leading to more fun in the future. But you let me know down below and you tell me of all the Pokémon games out there both mainline and offshoots, which one would you love to see a static recomp for next because there's so many different options and honestly I keep hearing Pokémon Snap a ton, which is not a game I really fell in love with back in the N64 era, but it seems like a lot of people out there do love it. So I definitely hope you guys get that soon.
I feel like it might be happening.
And for those of you that care and for those of you that don't care, I still give you the information every single video. The repo has absolutely no signs of any cloud usage or any other agents out there. Seems to be done by one dude and one dude only and it is that boy.
But as we get in, I will say absolutely nothing here makes me think that this is doing anything other than what Pokémon Red should be doing. But I will say right now, and I know everyone's always surprised on the channel, I have not played all that many Pokémon games in my life. Sure, I played a couple of the RPGs back in the day, but it is not a sort of franchise that I've taken a hard look at every single game. But you'll see here in the GitHub, it is in the description below with the developer's YouTube channel. Go over there and give them a sub and leave a comment that says VGE sent me. This is a full static re-comp and it also has that modding tool available. So, you're going to be able to do anything you want. And there is even a project wiki that's going to help you through those mods a little bit easier if you want to create them. Well, I feel like you're more of a player and less of a creator. But you leave me a comment down below and tell me, have you ever made any ROM hacks in the past? I would be curious. And right now, about 15 hours ago, it was slightly updated.
So, definitely grab the most recent build. Whatever is at the top of the releases tab on GitHub, so you'll be able to play the game with no issues whatsoever. But in my capture, it was stable. There were no crashes. There were no bugs, no visual glitches, or audio glitches that I could detect that would make me think that there really is anything that needs improvement before you could just sit down and enjoy this game and play it. And it's one of those things I talked to a few people that have been enjoying this one and they haven't had any issues yet either. Now, of course, it is a big game with a lot of different Pokémon to collect. So, it's possible that there's some obscure esoteric combination out there that could present a problem. But right now, there's no indication that anyone has found that yet. So, we should be basically buttoned up and good to go.
And the dev on this one does have a full Discord server as well where people are talking about mods. If you want to get in on the conversation, see what's happening right now, and see what's going to be happening in the future.
There is an entire community based around this. And I know a lot of you like to actually get involved, not just playing the game, but seeing what is coming up next and maybe even suggesting different features. Because again, there is a metric crap ton of stuff that could be done to something like a Pokémon Red static re-comp and maybe your recommendations could be taken. Like I always say, if I send you to anybody's Discord and you come from my channel, be polite, ask for things nicely, and engage in conversation in a really nice manner cuz I'm going to say 99 out of 100 view will do that, but anytime I send anyone from my channel to somewhere else, I always want you guys to be cool about things cuz right now gaming seems to be a little bit of an argument on almost every single topic and I don't want that coming from the channel. All I want is happy, stoked people that get to play new static re-comps and have fun.
Let's go into the first of two soundtrack samples. Go ahead and listen to the audio quality in the Pokémon static re-comp. Hear if there's anything out of alignment and I'll be right back with a bit more.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> So, that sounds like Pokémon Red to me, but you tell me cuz I always love to comment on basically every video now that I have what I call two-tin ears, which is to say that audio is not my strong suit. I do not use it as far as my own personal work is concerned outside of YouTube. If I am on a film set, I am behind the camera and the audio department handles amply everything. So, if something is slightly off tune, if it's playing slightly too fast or too slow by a few percent, or maybe even some of the instrumentation is coming in the wrong pitch, that is not something I usually notice. So, if you have any issues with the audio, you can tell me down below, but I haven't heard anybody else mention it, but it's always one of those things. You guys have thousands of eyes and thousands of pairs of ears versus my two eyes and two ears. So, every single video I do where I say I can't find an issue, I'm pleasantly surprised. And yes, I do like it when you help me find issues. That something like this is actually working correctly or if it does have any problems whatsoever. Because it really does take a big community effort to make sure everything like this is 100% buttoned up. And that is the goal of this developer. Basically, every single recap developer out there, they don't just want 100% perfect. They want beyond what the original base game is. [music] And that's why static becomes exist in the first place cuz if all this did was make it playable on your PC, well, we have emulation for that. And that is definitely something that I always advocate for. But these static recaps go beyond what emulation can technically do in making the mods easier. And it's one of those things that doesn't create new ways to do things that can't be done in emulation. It creates easier ways to do them. So, maybe it'll take only a couple months to make your ROM hack not something like 6 months. And I will say it's extremely easy to install as well.
You take your legally owned copy of Pokémon, you drag the file over top the actual recap window, and then in about 3 seconds, like you saw right there, maybe not even three, you'll be booted into the menu and you'll be ready to sit down and play the game with no issues whatsoever. There really isn't any sort of controller rebind option I've seen as of yet, but again, it is still in development. So, hopefully something like that comes soon unless I missed it in some sort of menu. And of course, it is using the actual kind of Super Game Boy color palette here as well. So, it does have a really fun hue, at least to me and my opinion. But you tell me down below, when you're playing Game Boy games, do you want them in something like the pure monochrome black and white, or do you want them in something like the actual colors you see on screen here? But playing around with this, running it on my PC, I really don't have anything to point to to say that I think it's doing anything other than what it should be doing. And that is really what I look for in static recaps, even if they are in active development, because you want to have a better experience than just sitting down at a Game Boy.
But, that's not really all that hard, cuz even with screen mods, the screen is tiny. If I'm going to play Game Boy games today, it's either going to be on software emulation or an FPGA device hooked up to my television, and now some static free comps as well. And having more ways to play games, having more [music] options is amazing, cuz this isn't just basically video game quote-unquote emulation or static recompilation, it's also preservation.
And that's always something I advocate for on the channel. Let's do one more soundtrack sample so you can get another piece of the audio, and I'll be right back with more.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> So, again, if it sounds perfect, you tell me down below if it sounds like it needs some improvements, also tell me down below. But, as far as my opinion on this one, I know a lot of people have been wanting more Pokémon static free comps, and I'm absolutely glad that there is another one here. And the developer on this one seems to have done absolutely everything right. Has a Discord for support, has a well-documented feature set on GitHub, has a mod engine built into the code so you can kind of play around with other things if you so want to. Super friendly dude who kind of chatted with me in the background, cuz I did have a few questions, and is really just excited for more people to enjoy something like this. So, again, if you want to play, the link is in the description below for the GitHub page, for the developer's Discord, as well as their own personal YouTube page where they talk about the development, and show other things off as far as this is concerned. So, definitely give them a sub, cuz I'm very firmly a rising tide floats all boats sort of person, and I want to see absolutely everyone basically succeed on this platform and get more viewership.
So, you've been waiting around for a Pokémon aesthetic recap. Pokémon Red is here for you today. The setup process is super easy. It's dragging and dropping one file and you're playing the game and you have to love that. Sure to that, leave me a comment and tell me what's the other Game Boy game you'd love to see a static recap for. But, we're done.
If you have any questions or comments, leave them down below and I'll see you next time. Bye-bye.
