Flash flooding occurs when heavy rainfall falls too quickly for the ground to absorb it, even when the rain is needed to relieve drought conditions; this rapid flooding can create dangerous road conditions requiring immediate safety precautions such as turning around when encountering flooded roadways and allowing extra travel time for morning commutes.

Flash flooding reported late Tuesday nightAdded:
Stepping outside about 11 o'clock on this Tuesday night. Much more quiet now in Memphis than it was earlier today or for last night. We do still have some severe thunderstorms in North Mississippi in parts of North Mississippi, especially down toward Oxford, Batesville, Corinth, Clarksdale for about the next hour or so. They could still be dealing with some strong storms, but Memphis is all clear. We did get a ton of rain though, almost 3 to four inches in some spots, more than that just in the last couple of days.
Now, of course, that's great news for the drought because we desperately needed some rain. I know a lot of those farmers are happy about that. But it came down so quick that it has led to some flooding. So, if you're going to be out late tonight, there are several roads that we've heard are flooded, covered in water, and we've heard of at least one person that had to be rescued from their car, from the roof of their car, because they drove into flood water. So, if you do see a flooded roadway, remember to turn around, don't drown. There could still be some ponding on the roadways. And while the flooding will subside overnight, those roads will probably still be a little bit wet for the Wednesday morning commute. So, you might want to give yourself just a little extra time.
