The Cyrus Cylinder, a 9-inch clay cylinder inscribed in Akkadian cuneiform and discovered in 1879 by archaeologist Hormuzd Rassam at the Esagila temple in Babylon, provides historical corroboration for the biblical accounts of Cyrus the Great's policy of returning exiled peoples to their homelands and rebuilding their sanctuaries, as described in Ezra 1 and Isaiah 44-45, though it is not the world's first human rights charter as some popularly claim.

The Cyrus Cylinder: Archaeology Meets the Exile and Return - Scriptorium本站添加:
A 9-in clay cylinder buried beneath a Babylonian temple quietly corroborates one of the [music] most significant moments in biblical history.
In October 539 BC, Cyrus the Great conquered Babylon without a battle.
Shortly after his scribes inscribed [music] this barrel-shaped cylinder in Akkadian cuneiform, 45 lines of royal propaganda, imperial policy, and building record, then buried it in the foundations [music] of Esagila, the great temple of Marduk.
Cyrus presents [music] himself as Marduk's chosen deliverer.
His announced policy, return exiled peoples and their gods to their homelands and reestablish their ruined sanctuaries.
That matches precisely what Ezra 1 and Isaiah 44 and 45 describe, Cyrus authorizing the Jewish exiles to return to Judah and [music] rebuild the Jerusalem temple. The cylinder never names Judah. It addresses a Babylonian audience, but it places the biblical decree within a verified pattern of standard Achaemenid imperial governance.
Anglo-Iraqi [music] archaeologist Hormuzd Rassam recovered it from Esagila's foundations in 1879.
It now sits in the British Museum. Some call it the world's first human rights charter, a modern overreading rejected by most Assyriologists.
It [music] is a Mesopotamian royal inscription composed for Babylonian eyes.
>> [music] >> What it actually provides is historical grounding for the return from exile. One cylinder, one empire, one remarkable convergence.
