In Western justice systems, the conflict between personal vengeance and legal due process creates profound moral dilemmas, as demonstrated when a sheriff must balance his desire for revenge against the principles of fair trial and the rule of law, ultimately revealing that true justice requires letting legal processes unfold rather than taking matters into one's own hands.

Western Film 2026 | Zane Grey Theater — Man Unforgiving | The Wildest Western Films #1080pAdded:
Heat. Heat. [music] [music] [music] [music] Heat.
[music] [music] Heat. [music] Heat. Heat.
[music] [music] [music] You got a choice of moves, stranger.
Pick the smart one.
Now come closer, mister.
Make it nice and calm like it from out of the west.
Dick Powels.
Same gray theater.
[music] [music] >> What's your name?
>> Well, is that important? It is. If I ask for it.
>> Ben Harper, >> where are you from?
>> Many places. Just as soon as I can find a new shoe for my horse, I'll be on my way.
>> I'm two up there on the hill. Why are they after you?
>> I have no idea.
>> You know them?
>> I didn't let them get close enough to tell.
>> Wouldn't figure you for the running kind.
>> I believe a man should have reasons before he fights. I didn't.
>> I do wonder though why they wouldn't follow me into town. Most folks got sense enough not to ride into Adam Prescott's town without being invited.
>> Oh, I see. Well, if you'll just tell me where I can find a blacksmith, Mr. Prescuit.
>> You don't sound like a saddle [ __ ] much as you look like one.
Something familiar about your face.
>> If we had met before, I'd remember you.
>> You look like you could use some rest, maybe a hot meal. Thank you for your kind invitation, but I'll be on my way.
>> I don't ask many men into my home.
>> Well, Mr. Prescuit, I find it very difficult to refuse your friendly hospitality.
>> Not exactly hospitality, Harper. I still got the feeling we met up somewhere.
>> And I say we haven't.
>> I still think maybe we have. There's soap in a basin behind the house by the water pump you can wash up back there.
I'll take care of your gun and your horse.
[music] [music] [music] >> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Would [music] [music] [music] you Mind pointing that somewhere else?
>> But a riff raff passes through Tyler. We still get Yankee soldiers drifting west.
I don't want none of them in my town.
>> The war has been over 3 years.
>> Some folks had good cause to remember it.
>> And some good cause to forget it.
>> Men like yourself. I bet you saw lots of action during the war.
>> I didn't say I was in the war.
Not at all.
>> Not at all.
>> Guess we better go in to supper.
[bell] >> It's delicious dinner, Mrs. Prescuit.
Food for the gods.
>> Thank you, Mr. Harper.
>> Gee, Mr. Harper, you sure can talk fancy. Billy.
>> Well, Billy, the way a man talks depends a lot on where he comes from.
>> Where do you come from, Ben? My guess is it might be someplace up north. From the fine way you talk, I'd say you've been a professional man. Lawyer, teacher, maybe even a doctor.
>> My paw, he was a hero in the war. A big hero. He killed a lot of Yankees.
>> Billy, there shouldn't be such talk.
>> Your mom's right, son. Shouldn't be talk like that at this supper table.
>> Shouldn't be talk about killing anytime.
Oh, sheriff, huh?
>> That's right, Ben. I'm the law here in Tyler.
Get your hat. You're coming with me.
>> [music] [music] >> Chuck, go get your horse saddled up. Why don't you make a trip over to Abalene?
>> Abalene? That's a nice ride. Adam.
>> Abene.
>> All right, Adam.
>> Oh, and Chuck. Okay. H up Dave Simpson.
I got a little job for him.
>> Yes, sir.
>> You're not holding me.
>> Have a seat.
>> That ain't a pretty sight, is it?
>> I've seen men hurt worse and lose more.
I didn't lose my leg. It was taken from me at Shiloh.
>> Shiloh.
>> Stinking Yankee Butcher.
I'm just waiting for the day when I meet up with him again.
>> You know the man?
>> Oh, I'll know him when I see him. And I'll kill him for what he did to me.
>> Maybe the leg had to come off.
To me, this looks more like shrapnel than a bullet.
Strange that a man claiming he wasn't in the war should know about shrapnel.
>> Man can imagine anything, >> especially if he's filled with hate.
>> You sit for me, Adam?
>> Have a seat.
>> All settled, Adam.
>> Ben, you look like you could use a drink. There's a saloon across the street.
>> Well, I might run off.
>> You got no gun. Your horse is lame. You won't run off.
Besides, Dade here is going to keep an eye on you. Dade. Mr. Harper is a guest of Tyler. I wouldn't want him leaving without having a chance to say goodbye to him.
Take a gun.
I want you to ride over the army post to Abalene. Tell him the sheriff of Tyler wants information on a Ben Harper, what his rank was in the Union Army. On Chuck, I want to know if a Ben Harper served in their medical core. I get going. You better be back by tomorrow afternoon.
[music] >> I'll see you, Dave.
Oh yeah, >> these gentlemen were kind enough to let me sit in.
>> Looks like they'll regret their kindness.
I think I'll take a hand.
You know me, Adam. I'm Sam Baker from Grover City.
>> So, I know you.
>> We ain't here to start any trouble, but we got something to settle with him.
Been looking all over town for him. Been here twice before.
>> Why?
>> He's a no good card cheat.
>> Simmer down, kid.
What do you got to say about that?
>> These two are just bad poker players and very poor losers.
I don't cheated cards.
>> Well, after he went out of money and rode out of town, we found them cards was marked.
>> I didn't mark them.
>> His words good enough for me.
>> Well, that ain't for me.
Better get a doctor. Man's got a broken rib.
>> Is he able to ride?
>> It'll be painful, but >> take him back where he came from. Our doc's out of town.
>> Get him on that side.
>> Easy.
I'll take care of him. Harper, I'll still be looking for you.
>> You must know a lot about doctrine. You knew that ribb was cracked right away.
>> I heard the bone crack when you hit him.
>> I didn't think I hit him that hard.
>> Thought you wanted to play cards.
>> How about them [music] for stakes?
Now, it ain't exactly polite for a man to leave a poker game when he's winning.
You going to keep those links? You can, you know, if they belong to you.
>> They belong to me. Maybe I [music] won them.
They could have been poker stakes before.
>> Maybe.
But you ain't [music] leaving town till I make sure.
>> Sure deal, Adam.
[music] [music] >> Good morning, Mr. Harper.
>> Morning. [music] Uh, >> I thought you might like some coffee.
Oh, >> thank you.
Hope sleeping in here wasn't too uncomfortable. It >> was fine. Mr. Simpson saw that I wasn't disturbed. He's a very good watchdog.
>> Will you be leaving soon?
>> Just as soon as I can find a blacksmith.
>> I hope your husband doesn't interfere with me any further.
>> Oh, Mr. Harour, Adam's a fine man. It's only since Well, it it's not easy for a man like Adam.
>> It's not easy for any man.
>> He was so proud of his strength, how he could ride, how he could outwalk and out wrestle anyone in the county.
He told you, didn't he, about what happened?
>> Yes.
>> I want you to leave, Tyler, right away today. I know, Adam. I've seen the way he looked at you.
>> Mrs. Prescott, I'm sure your husband looks that way at every stranger who passes through here.
>> You should have known Adam before.
He was a happy man. I keep remembering that man.
Makes it easier living with his bitterness.
>> I've dealt with bitterness before.
I don't want any trouble with your husband.
or any man.
I'd better find that blacksmith.
That's all you've got to say.
>> Like I said, mister, I ain't got time to show you your horse. Just too busy.
>> When will you have time?
>> It's hard to say.
>> Then I'd like to buy a horse.
>> Ain't got none for sale.
>> There's a whole corral full of them back here with a for sale sign nailed on the fence. It's like I said, mister, they ain't for sale. I'm busy. [music] >> I'm sorry, but it seems like I don't have a gun left in the store.
>> There's a whole case full right behind you.
>> Oh, them. H.
>> Yes, them.
>> Well, they're all sold, mister. Just waiting for the owner to pick them up.
>> Nope. I ain't got a gun left for sale.
Adam was right.
This is his town.
>> Used to be a real unhealthy place, Tyler. Folks were afraid to walk the streets, afraid to speak up. Then Adam Presca run out the settle tramps and the gamblers and the gunfighters. Run them all clean out of town.
Yep. This used to be a real scared town.
>> Seems to me you still live in a real scared town. Everybody's still afraid only now of Adam Prescuit.
>> [music] [music] >> Must be getting sleepy, Mr. Simpson. Do I manage fine? Where's the sheriff?
>> He's in his office.
>> Thank you.
I'm tired of people holding guns on me.
Now, don't try anything foolish.
>> Think you've got the guts to use that rifle?
>> I don't know.
You [music] try something, we'll both find out.
[music] I'll take my gun belt.
[music] Oh, Adam, it's not loaded. I removed the shelf before I came in.
>> We've got something to clear up before I let you leave here.
>> Why won't you believe me? I'm not your man.
>> Around here, folks do what I tell them.
You ain't leaving until I make sure. I feel sorry for you and your town. Around here, everybody lives in terror of Adam Prescott.
>> Ain't no reason for fear in this town. I made it a good place for decent folks to live. They got cause to respect me.
[clears throat] >> Don't you ever let them see you without this. They'll liable to lose that respect and discover it was fear after all.
>> You keep talking.
I like hearing your voice. I keep remembering a voice just like it. You haven't got the courage to live with your handicap. You use it as a club. And all because you've got to prove something that everybody else already knows.
That you're as good as any man.
Now, I don't want any showdown with you.
>> I'm asking you to let me ride out of here peacefully.
>> You won't get 10 yards from this office.
I want you here when my deputy gets back from Abalene.
could have saved him a lot of writing.
These cufflings convinced you, didn't they?
All right.
I was an officer in the Union Army, >> medical corps, >> infantry.
>> You were at Shiloh, >> and a lot of other places.
Now, there's a horse hitched out here.
I'm riding him out of town. I'm leaving you a good horse in exchange.
>> You ain't leaving here until I let you.
>> I'll be gone before you can get your hands on a loaded gun.
>> I wonder, Adam.
I think we could have been friends.
[music] >> [music] >> Harper, >> you set one foot in that stirrup and I'll put a bullet through you.
>> I'm riding out of here.
>> Adam. Adam's [music] belly hers.
It's his leg.
>> Get him inside. Doc's out of town. What happened? fell out of the big tree here.
>> Let me see.
>> Let's try the hotel, shall we?
There.
>> It's broken.
>> Are you sure?
>> Dr. Carwell, he won't be back for 3 or 4 days.
>> It can't wait.
>> Be no need to. He knows all about legs.
You're going to set my son's leg, mister, and I'm [music] going to watch you get some wood for splints and some brandy. Jesus pain.
All right. Now, Billy, I'm just about finished. Billy.
Now two of you carry him home here. Get him right under here.
>> Be careful. Careful.
>> Hi, Billy.
>> You and me are going outside. Doctor >> Adam, you don't have to be a doctor to know how to set a broken bone.
>> You don't get away with it that [music] easy.
I've been waiting too long to catch up with you again.
Now outside. But >> Adam, he fixed Billy's leg >> and he took mine. Now you go with the boy.
[music] Dade, count to three.
>> Don't do it, Adam.
>> When he calls three, you better go for your gun.
Dade, start counting.
>> 1 2 3 [music] Get away from me.
>> You're going to listen to me first.
>> You were right, Adam. I was in that tent at Shiloh with a bullet in my shoulder.
That's why my face is familiar to you.
I watched that doctor trying to save your leg. He tried, but it had to come off before the operation was finished.
Your outfit counterattacked and we have a retreat. But that doctor stayed behind. He stayed behind with you.
We found him two days later when we retook the area.
All these years, Adam, you've hated a man who died saving your life.
>> Why didn't you tell me?
>> Would you have believed me?
>> [music] >> Then help me. [music] [music] [bell] Wasn't [music] [music] [music] that a shot? [music] >> [music] >> Are you ready? [music] Heat. Heat.
[music] [music] [music] Hold [music] it. You back shooting skunk.
Don't try it, Clang.
>> [music] [music] >> Shot in the back without his even touching [music] his weapon.
This time Owen, it ain't self-defense.
This time you hang. cost [music] from the west coat. [music] [music] [music] >> [music] >> Look, I don't gun a man in the back and you know it. I'm tired and any man I gun down is facing me reaching for his.
>> Just give me an excuse and we won't have to waste time on a trial.
>> Now, let's be honest, Sheriff.
You're scared of me. You're all scared of me. You, Kley, why don't you say what you think and there's only one reason why I'd put a bullet in Kle's back.
You'll have a time to tell your side.
>> To them, have they got a safe chance to hang me? Can any one of them think I'd be afraid to give Kle a fair draw? You ain't a big man no more, Owen. Right now, any ordinary fella can see way over your head.
>> Now move, little man.
We ain't going to waste any time. The trial's this afternoon. I'll see Judge Hollis is ready, and we need six men for jury.
>> I'll serve. You can put me on the list.
Count me in. G.
>> Me too.
>> It's Mason, Baker, Tupill, Walsh, Riggs.
That's five.
>> You can be number six. Cobb.
Choose somebody else. Plenty who welcome a chance to finish off Owen.
>> You're saying I'm picking men to make sure he hangs? I'm saying there ain't six men in this town who won't jump to vote Owen guilty, whether he murdered Kle or not.
>> Do you think he didn't?
>> I don't mark a man murderer till all the facts are in. I'll vote the rope. I'll take pleasure in tying the knot.
>> Ever since you've come to town, Cobb, you talked about how the law in this part of the country should be strong, important. But when a posi is being formed, you ain't ever around. When a jury's called, you got no interest. I never had much use for a man who did nothing but talk.
>> I don't see it makes any difference my being on a jury or everybody else is out for blood.
>> You got some like him to Rowan?
>> No. nor anyone like him. But you don't know if a killer is a killer till you hear it legal in a trial. Come on. You may as well know that I figure Owen's guilty. But I'm willing to listen to the facts. Make my decision when I've heard them. Even if the facts don't agree with what you want.
>> You're on the jury, Cobb. This will give you a chance to see the law don't go wrong.
That's what you want, isn't it?
>> Looks like what I'd better do. Like it or not. All right, G. You got your jury.
Five men voting guilty before the trial and me.
>> Ain't nothing [music] to wait for. Well, we're going to talk it out. We all say he's guilty. How does one man come off saying five are wrong?
>> We have a responsibility to a higher power than this court. Thou shalt not kill. And Todd Owen killed.
>> Well, it don't make any sense. You didn't hear anything different.
>> Well, I got no use for a man who'd stand up for just quiet down.
Cobb here's a reasonable man. I I think you'll see his mistake once we've talked this out.
>> Cobb, you've got something on your mind.
Well, I'm willing to hear it and we'll get on with the job.
>> I keep asking myself, what's he on trial for?
Killing Clay or because he's Todd Owen.
>> Well, he admitted the killing. He's guilty. That's the law.
>> You know how the law works out here. One man draws on another, the other can shoot and kill in self-defense.
Owen didn't make those rules.
But he's lived by them. He never fought fair in his life. He'd choose a man, pick at him till a man forgot that Owen was faster with a gun than anybody else.
He'd draw like my kid brother did, never having a chance. You call that a fair fight?
>> If that had happened to my brother, I'd feel the same as you do. But we're not here deciding whether your brother was killed fair or not.
>> All right. I say we forget Owen's a gunman. No use to waste time on what he's been. He killed Kle, shot him in the back. For this he hangs. First, I got to ask a few questions. I didn't get the answers at the trial. Maybe you got them. All the answers I need.
>> Why did everybody hear three shots? Owen only fired two.
>> Now, what has that got to do with it?
>> Kle's gun wasn't fired.
>> First shot sounded like it came from a rifle. Everybody's agreed on that. Well, maybe my grandmother was hunting bears at the edge of town. Great hunter, grandma. [laughter] >> Plague's horse was tied up at the rail.
There was a rifle boot on it, but the rifle was missing. You got a point on that rifle.
>> 100 reasons why a man's rifle might be missing. That's no cause to let a killer off.
>> One thing that don't add up is cause enough not to hang a man.
>> What else is on your mind, Cobb?
>> Well, why would Owen mount his horse and ride 50 yards to shoot a man in the back? A man he could outdraw wearing mittens.
>> Yeah, if Owen wanted to dry gulch Kle, you'd think he'd set it up better. Yeah, >> Kle was around town enough. So Owen could have picked a fight with him if he don't mind to.
>> That's another thing. Any reason why Owen should want to kill Kle? Any trouble between him?
>> I haven't heard of none.
>> No, neither have I.
So take a look at it the other way around.
What reason should Amos Kle have to shoot him like Owen claims he did?
>> I reckon half the men in this town I'd like to take a shot at Todd Owen.
>> He's killed three men he's going to hang. You ain't going to stop it. If we don't string them up legal, the rope will still be just as tight.
Only he might have company.
>> Don't like threat.
>> Wait a minute.
>> Choose me anytime you want. Cob, I'll be waiting.
Why'd you join the jury, Cobb, if you feel it ain't right to hang a guilty man?
>> Sometimes you can kill a man by turning your back on him.
>> Owen's the killer.
>> I'm not sure of that.
And you can't be either.
>> Don't tell me what I'm sure about.
Before you hang a man, you've got to be sure. What are you trying to say, Cobb?
When I was living in New Mexico, some cattle were stolen from a ranch down near the Canadian River. Bunch got together to track down the rustlers. We caught up with a fella. Tracks matched and there was a dead steer with a brand we were looking for. We all had the same thing in mind.
Two days later, word got back that a couple of fellas were shot down near the border. They were the wrestlers. They had the cattle we were looking for.
I couldn't plot out the picture I kept seeing in my mind.
A man and a rope and a tree.
>> You ain't going to listen to him, are you, bigger?
Baker, you're a religious man. Oh, don't mistake me. I respect you for it. But I know that because you are, you've got to above all be able to live with yourself.
Now, if you can say to yourself without any doubt that Owen is guilty, you got nothing to worry about.
Maybe we'd better take another vote.
Hey, Owen just slugged Whitley and took his gun. He broke for it.
[music] Don't show yourselves. We got him cornered. [music] He's in there someplace. Anyway, he can get out.
>> Just one feet first.
Might be the trial was wasted. A bullet could cheat the rope.
>> The juryy's still out. He's not guilty, will we say? So, we got doubts even after he tried to escape. What man wouldn't try to run out in a hanging?
Another ballot to be counted. [music] Go. The verdict's in. You'll know.
>> Take your time. He ain't going no place.
We got men enough to make sure of that.
[music] Two.
>> I'd like to get one clear shot at him.
Just one. Be a lot faster than all this jewelry talk.
>> Maybe [music] you'll still get a chance.
Stay undercover. No use in [music] you catching a bullet. At least not for a man who's going to be dead before sundown.
One way [music] or the other.
>> Five to one. One guilty, [music] five not guilty.
>> That was before he broke jail. You got to know he's guilty now.
>> Would any of you pass up a chance to break loose if you were in Owen's spot?
Guilty or innocent? No. Well, I don't see a man waiting around to hear if he's going to be hung. Not if he has a chance to get away.
>> 5 to1, 50 to1. As long as there's war, he don't go free. I'm not changing. You can talk till my brother climbs out of the grave. Todd won't put him in. I know your brother.
Something was driving him. I don't know what he was trying to prove.
Maybe that he was bigger than you made him out to be.
>> He's got nothing to do with this.
>> You're putting Owen on trial for killing him. Now for killing Kle. When you were around with your brother, he didn't talk much. Mostly he listened to you. Played second pit. The kid brother who took orders. But when he was alone, >> if I'd have been home, wouldn't have chanced it. I'd have got him if it was the last thing I did. When he was alone, he wasn't taking orders. He was making up for not being treated like a grown man. Sometimes he pushed too hard, like he was asking for trouble. That's how it was when him and Owen fought. You should know what was driving him.
Even though when you're together you look like strangers or like a boss and flunky. He was your brother. You should know.
>> Hanging on it won't help you. And you don't sleep better at night with two ghosts instead of one. I'm not listening to anything you say. You're talking to yourself.
>> Well, you got to talk now.
Why do you want Owen dead? And you better come up with the right answer or you'll be living with that lie the rest of your life. [clears throat] >> Leave me alone. Owen gunned your brother down. Why did he do it?
>> It was Owen.
>> He pulled the trigger.
>> It was Owen.
>> Who put your brother in front of the bullet?
>> I wasn't even there.
>> Is that enough of an answer for you?
>> I tell you, Owen is going to [music] I tried.
[music] Even as a kid, he was so stubborn.
[music] All right.
Owen goes free, then [music] it's him or me.
That's the thing I got to do.
[music] I don't know what you're waiting on, but we're going to burn out Owen.
We found him not guilty.
>> Are you drunk? Well, you got to be out of your mind. No six men in this town had let Owen off.
>> Judge said he had to be guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Well, there were doubts called. Too many for us to go any other way.
Mason, Baker, you Tupill, all of you. Owen goes free. That's the way it is.
>> You're doing nobody else.
>> You better call off your man.
>> You know how I waited to get my hands on Owen. Now I got him holed up and you're turning him loose.
>> All right, he goes free. But after this, you get yourself another sheriff.
>> [music] [music] >> Hold up. Owen got found not guilty.
Owen, you can come out.
Owen, I said the jury turned you loose.
>> Maybe he didn't hear you.
>> He heard me. Unless he's dead.
>> Six fools say you're not guilty.
You're free.
>> I've been hit.
>> I need help.
>> Ain't that a shame?
>> A man's shot. Whether it's Todd Owen or anyone else, he needs help. He's not a guilty man being hunted down like an animal. You're not the first sheriff that wanted a fast gun out of the way.
But as long as you're wearing that badge, you got no call to let a man bleed to death.
>> Maybe you'd nurse a sick rattlesnake.
>> I'll go in. But there'll be those who wonder why you didn't.
>> [music] >> over here.
[music] I'll put it in your holster and turn around.
>> Are you out of your mind? Now, >> you didn't really think I'd fall for it, did you? A jury in this town turning me loose.
>> They did? Why do you think I walked in here?
>> Because you figured I was just as stupid as you are, and I'd fall for that story.
And we're going out of here together.
And if [music] anything happens, you're going to get the first bullet. Come on.
[music] Now, anybody tries anything, G gets it.
The two of us are riding out of here.
Don't nobody think about a posy unless you want a dead sheriff.
>> What are [music] you trying to do, Todd?
You're free.
>> You're a liar. I was on a jury. You know that.
If you don't believe me, ask Mason, Tuppill, Walsh.
>> They turn me loose. They're all too scared of Todd Owen. Now turn around. I don't want nobody interfering.
Turn around.
I'm fine. [music] I'm out of [music] the next time I won't be so softarted. Anybody else moves, G gets it. When we get a ways out of town, I'm going to give you a sheriff back his gun. Been waiting a long time.
>> [music] >> Hey, let's go.
[music] >> Keep this for me.
>> Where you going?
>> After them.
>> Alone.
>> Might let one man come up to him. More than that, not a chance.
>> What do you think you're going to do?
>> I don't know. Are you going after him with our gun?
>> That's plain crazy. I reckon we're all about as guilty as you are. No reason you should get yourself killed.
>> I don't propose to.
[music] Then take your gun.
I can't outdraw Tadon. And if I could, I wouldn't try.
[music] Good luck. Thanks.
>> [music] [music] >> Hold up.
[music] [music] [music] Heat.
[music] [music] Heat.
[music] >> [music] >> Your >> good friend Car Oakley.
>> I got no friends.
>> You don't. Listen, good car. I said nobody follows. Came here alone. I don't have a gun.
Came here to try to convince you you're wrong. The boat was not guilty.
>> Sure it was. Yeah, it was. Because none of the jury could be sure what happened to Kle.
I got no reason to lie to you except saving him from a bullet.
>> I'm telling you the truth. You let G go and there'll be no charge against you.
>> True or not, it don't make much matter.
If he doesn't get me for CL, he'll find someone else.
>> I'll sure be trying.
>> Get on your horse, Gold. We'll ride back to town.
>> Colt goes nowhere.
You've been waiting a long time to find a way to get me. A safe way. You know how it was with Clay get you one to hang me.
>> [music] >> Now you pick it up with a barrel and put it in your holster.
>> I will reach for mine till you do.
>> Just got your neck out of one noose.
Don't be ups.
>> I won't draw with you.
>> Pick it up.
[music] You don't gun down an unarmed man, Todd.
You never have. That's what he's counting [music] on. He knows it.
>> He knew it when he tried to get me for Kle.
>> I'm riding out, Owen. You can take a shot if you want.
>> If you do that, I'll be riding at the front of the P that tracks you down if it takes a year.
>> He ain't walking away.
Now, G, you pick up the gun or I'll shoot you down right with St. man. Right now, you can ride out of the territory.
Go any place you want. But if you SHOOT G, GET OUT, COBB. GET DOWN NOW.
>> [music] >> They won't hear no more. NOW YOU MARTIN, GET OUT of here [music] now. G right now.
Why you here? [music] >> [music] [music] [music] >> Don't do it.
[music] Thanks, Cobb. You did real fine.
[music] Heat. Heat. [music] [music] [music] >> [music] >> Unhitch them horses.
[music] >> [music] >> Put that down.
[music] [bell] [music] >> [music] >> from out of the west.
[music] Dick Powels, Zane Gray Theater.
[music] >> [music] >> Afternoon, Will. Where's Bill?
Oh, Judge.
Bill had me make this for you.
That's a beauty.
Nobody in Lake County will beat me now.
>> Bel won't either.
>> Judge, a man once told me, there always comes a time when the pupil overtakes the master.
Come to think of it, judge, you was the man that told it to me.
>> Well, anyway, we'll keep it in the family. Where is she?
>> Over making tallow. Just follow your nose.
Keep [music] a tight rain on that label, boss. Dang nearly burn the skin off.
>> Sure be a lot easier on us when we get that new axle grease from Chicago.
>> You get me down here to talk about axle grease.
>> Oh, grandpa. No, I got you down here to show you something.
>> How'd you get that?
>> The McGregor mines have reopened up at Carson, and we have the contract to freight their supplies.
>> That money's in advance, judge, for the first shipment. First shipment went out this morning.
>> Now come to the office and watch me do what you said was impossible. Meet the payroll.
>> Ah, that's fine. But hauling supplies for one diggings won't keep you in business.
>> You still don't think I can do it?
>> It'll take years for this country to recover from the war between the states.
And right now, you got 10 wagons laid up in way stations around Arizona.
>> Eight. One is already on its way up to McGregor. The other one's coming in from Phoenix with a second load of supplies.
>> When I turned this line over to you, I told you you were on your own. Maybe you'll make a go of it and maybe you won't. But don't interrupt my afternoon siesta to tell me about it. Judge, if I wasn't directly related to you, I'd tell you what a stubborn old billy goat you are. Come on.
>> And I wish people had stopped calling me judge. It's been 20 years since I sat on the bench. Oh, thanks for the whip. Come home early. I'll have the targets all set up.
[music] >> [music] >> Well, this is it, boys.
[music] [music] Come on. Good, man. Act like you always expected it.
>> [music] >> You got a right nice outfit.
>> Thanks.
>> Kind of outfit I always wanted to be part of.
>> You looking for jobs?
>> Well, not exactly, ma'am. My name's Rufus Murdoch. And this is my oldest boy, N.
>> Howdy, ma'am.
>> N's the politest man that's ever been.
He's got to be. Otherwise, folks might take offense at what he says. And that can be downright fatal.
This is Red, my second boy. He's a mean one in the family. He's a sandstorm mixed with a whirlwind. He's bad from bottom up and rotten clean through.
Don't you mind, P man? You see, he's given to boasting. [laughter] >> This is my youngest.
He don't talk much.
>> Sure doesn't take after his paw.
He's sensitive like an artist, you might say. He draw the black ball on the side of our freight wagon.
>> Freight wagon.
>> Of course, we ain't got fancy printing like the Garrison freight line, but that's cars none of us can ride. But any fool can plainly see from the markings that we're the Black Ball Overland Freight Line at Limited.
>> Well, you're welcome to compete, but there's hardly room for one carrier in these parts. Well now, man. We were of the same mind. That's why we decided against competing.
We figure I'm merging.
>> What? Why you old? If you had the sense of a blind mule.
>> I don't think this is the right outfit for you.
>> Oh, it is, ma'am. Certainly is. We investigated. We know you got a contract with the McGregor Mines. We know you're getting this line back on its feet.
>> I'll bet if I investigated you, I'd find a sheriff in your past and not too far behind. Oh, ain't so, ma'am. We are a hardworking family. We went bust mining, farming, ranching. We figure our luck's due for a change, and we are turning our efforts to frighten.
>> I can see you're a man of strong character, Mr. Murdoch. If you're willing to work, I might have jobs for you.
>> Well, I'd be sherking my duty as a father if I let my boys hire out for wages. Murdoch never worked for nobody and never will.
We'll come in as partners. You just better move on.
>> Come on. Get >> there. Now you see, ma'am, no matter how polite N is, there's always someone anxious to crowd the notches on his gun.
N the gent's unarmed.
>> I'll handle him, P. That stick makes him just about my size.
>> Are we We come to join this outfit, not to fight it.
>> Get off my property.
>> All right, we'll go. But we'll stay around town a while. Sometimes things happen to make folks change their minds.
>> Might be smart to talk to the marshall about those fellas.
>> The marshall's on a circuit tour collecting taxes. He won't be back [music] for another week.
>> And Ben Leslie, thanks for your patience, Ben.
>> My pleasure, boss. By this time next month, we'll have all the wagons running.
>> Get the boss.
>> Boss, where were Drago?
>> You heard?
>> Just my pride.
>> What happened?
>> They burned the wagon. Every last blanket and every last sack of flour.
>> Do you recognize them?
>> Didn't see them. They were hid among the rocks.
>> Where's Tim?
>> He rode over the mine to tell McGregor the surprise won't be coming.
>> You look done in. You better get some rest.
>> Nothing we could do, boss. Just nothing with those guns on us. All right.
We sure can't stand another loss like that. Meeting that payroll took all the cash we had. Now, >> those four skunks named Murdoch.
>> Yeah, put it back.
>> Now, that doesn't sound like Bell Garrison.
>> You're getting shot won't save our contract.
>> You're not going to let them get away with this.
>> First things first, we have to get those supplies to McGregor.
>> Sure. We got another shipment coming from Phoenix. What happens if we lose it?
>> Can't. It's up to you to keep an eye on the Murdoch until it gets here without the gun.
>> [music] >> I don't care what grandpa says. I'm staying here until that wagon gets in from Phoenix. If it takes all night, >> you won't like it.
>> I don't either, but that's the way it is.
>> Bal, they outplayed me. Old man Murdoch and the Redhead had been sitting in the last chance saloon like they were glued there. The other two left a couple hours ago. I didn't figure they'd try anything alone. They took the road to Phoenix.
>> We better ride.
[music] [music] Any [music] [music] doubts now about who did it?
>> No doubts, just no proof.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> Well, I didn't mean to be forward, ma'am. We can put a desk for me over here. We thought maybe you'd come around to our way of thinking.
>> A fair-minded man like you wouldn't want to interfere.
>> My boy don't need no help.
[music] [music] >> [music] >> We wouldn't have harmed it. We would have been satisfied with half. But you made your choice.
>> You murdering saddle [ __ ] When the marshall gets back, I'm going to see you hang higher. That >> you can't prove nothing except your luck is bad. So bad you got no supplies to deliver. So bad you ain't got a chance to keep that contract.
>> Come on, boy.
You you show yourself on the street, my boy N will be waiting. [music] [music] >> Afternoon, Liz.
>> Afternoon, Belle. My credit still good?
>> Well, can always chance a few yards of calico and a can of beans.
>> Oh, I need a few hundred cans of beans, 50 stacks of flour, and >> Sorry, I can't accommodate you.
>> Well, by the end of the week, if I can't replace them, I'll pay you in cash.
>> I can't do it.
>> Why not?
>> Cuz his partners are a >> partners. The news of your bad luck is all around town. Bel, somebody's going to take over. May as well be me and my partners. You throw in with them and they'll end up with your hide.
>> Well, we won't be stepping on each other's toes. I'm going to supply and they're going to haul.
>> And when we promise to deliver, we will.
That's what I told Mr. McGregor up at the mines. And Mr. McGregor agreed that the contract will go to the outfit that delivers.
>> Ed, I can keep that contract if I get supplies. My grandfather founded this town and made it possible for you to settle. When times were hard, we freighted your goods free to tide you over.
What good are supplies going to do if you can't get them through?
>> All the John in the world ain't changing the shape of things. The garrison freight line is about to go bust.
[music] [music] You ride to the ranches east of the river. Won't you take the other side?
Tell them what we need. Tell them we'll take anything they can spare. Ben, you go to the sore mill at Twin Forks. Get anything you can.
There's only one way to beat the Murdoch.
Ballots all over town, saying I'm afraid to step outside for fear of running into one of them. Nobody's putting a yellow tag on me.
>> Nude's a gunfighter.
>> I can match his draw.
>> With your hand in that condition? Uh-uh.
If you really want to help, don't do anything to play into their hands. Wait till we get our supplies.
>> If we do get them, how are we going to deliver them?
I don't know, but there must be an answer somewhere.
An answer without killing.
>> I thought this was the time, Grandpa.
>> I'm not sleeping very well. I don't like what's going on. I heard what happened at the store. Yeah, true blue ass came through like a real friend. Right between the eyes.
>> We got to get that stuff from McGregor somewhere.
>> I've already sent the boys out to every outfit we know.
>> All the ranches need as far as plenty.
They'll be glad to help.
>> That's not our problem.
>> I also heard about the dry go.
How do I get a wagon through, Grandpa?
>> It's going to take a bit of thinking.
>> My brain feels like it has a padlock on it.
>> The idea, of course, is to knock the coin off without knocking over the block of wood.
>> I guess I'm not in the mood.
>> You think you're in trouble?
Let me tell you, Bail, I knew a fellow once who was in trouble that was trouble. This fell's name was Williams.
Got caught in the middle of a Sue uprising. Country all around was swarming with Sue, killing every white they came across. You'd say he was in trouble, wouldn't you?
>> Well, I'd say he had no way out.
>> No, but he had a brain. You know how he got out?
>> Uh-uh.
>> He disguised himself up to look exactly like those marauding Indians. They let him walk right through their lines.
You see, he sure fooled those Indians.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Oh, Grandpa Frank. Ed. Ed.
>> Hey, Bill. Come back here and finish this contest. Come here, >> Ed. Grab a [music] >> [music] [music] >> 41 shot note. Remember your poor taught you to be thrifty.
[music] [music] When the mood suits, I'm waiting on you.
>> Man, hold up.
Go ahead, N.
Go after it.
[music] Any Murdoch want to make a move.
[music] [music] >> That whip trick fools us just once, is all.
>> Don't press your luck.
AD's got a real short temper.
[music] >> You had no right interference.
>> I didn't want to see you killed.
>> Puts us right back where we started against a stacked deck.
>> We have a card we haven't turned yet.
>> Yeah. When do we turn it?
>> Tonight.
>> [music] >> P.
>> What time is it?
>> It's almost dawn. P. I've been hearing wagons coming and going.
>> Are you up? We up for that.
>> Them wagons is going into the garrison yard.
>> Gil, get up, G. Saddle two horses. Go on. Get going.
>> You and N. Load this wagon fast. Get on the roof before she does.
>> What's the matter, Mom?
>> That girl sure has get up and [music] go. She got herself supplies somewhere.
>> You mean she beat us?
>> Boy, you lost confidence in your paw.
Go on.
[music] [music] Well, now I reckon that's about the prettiest appearing sea I ever saw.
>> What's it look like now, boss?
>> Like the black ball overland freight line. It'll >> be light in about an hour. Then you can send her on its way.
>> Uh-uh. We're not [music] waiting till it's light. Come on then.
>> Oh, Belle.
>> Mor, you get up there in place of her.
>> Stay right where you are, Grandpa. I can't let anyone else take this risk.
You come down from that box.
>> Boss, >> you just called it. I'm the boss. Get the wagon rolling.
>> You do no such thing, >> judge. Even I got enough sense not to argue with her when she's like this.
>> All right, you be careful.
[music] Hey, [music] got our markings.
>> Paul, skin us alive. We let them get there first. Come on.
>> [music] >> YEAH.
[music] [music] HEAT.
>> [music] >> All right, boy. You know what you got to do? [music] [music] >> [bell] [music] [music] [music] >> Fires is Gentlemen, [music] here comes theirs.
[music] No, NO.
PULL UP. Pull up.
>> I can't figure it out. They wouldn't stop to help us.
>> We're not them.
[music] >> You killed them. You killed our own Red.
Red nuke.
>> Guess a man shouldn't try to do too much for his boys.
>> Do you want us to help you take them in?
>> No. I brought my boys here. I'll take them home.
>> [music] >> There we go.
[music] >> [music]
