In criminal justice, prosecutors can seek 'sexually violent predator' (SVP) designations for individuals convicted of serious sexual crimes to prevent their release from prison, even after serving their original sentences. This legal mechanism allows courts to extend confinement for those deemed to pose continued danger to society. The 'Girl in the Box Case' (1985) involved Cameron Hooker, who kidnapped Colleen Stan and held her captive for seven years; prosecutors are now seeking SVP status to block his release after his 74-year sentence, with a forensic psychologist confirming he meets the criteria.

Prosecutors seek sexually violent predator label for Cameron Hooker to block release from prisonAdded:
Happening today, the jury selection will start for this man convicted in the notorious "Girl in the Box" case.
Cameron Hooker was convicted back in 1985 of keeping a sex slave in Red Bluff for 7 years. Prosecutors want him deemed now as a sexually violent predator to prevent him from being released from prison. Hooker was sentenced to 74 years for kidnapping Colleen Stan and forcing her to stay in a box under he and his wife's bed. A forensic psychologist who interviewed Hooker in prison recently, Dr. Michelle Vorwerk, wrote in her report that Hooker does meet the criteria as a sexually violent predator.
The trial was moved to San Mateo County because of the publicity. The jury selection is scheduled to continue tomorrow.
