Madoka Magica Isn’t Subversive And That’s A Good Thing

[00:00:00]Spoilers for all of Moka Magika. Moka Magika isn't actually subversive and that's what makes it great. Don't believe me? Well, what do you what do you think makes it so different from previous magical girl anime? The girls dying horrifically. Been that way since the genre's golden age. Their power source actually being evil the whole time. It was already somewhat of a trope. Magical girls fighting each other happens all the time.

[00:00:26]There are two reasons for Moka gaining a reputation for being more mature than its contemporaries. The first is simply the length. The average magical girl season is over 40 episodes whereas Moka's only 12. This cuts out the need for episodic filler, thus condensing the darkest moments into being right next to each other. The second aspect that makes Moa feel so different is the most important and where so many of its derivatives failed. It's a reconstruction of the magical girl genre, not a deconstruction. A reconstruction.

[00:01:01]A deconstruction takes a genre and critiques it, poking holes into its tropes and conventions until it falls apart. A reconstruction, however, takes the holes that that the deconstruction would poke and fills them in.

[00:01:27]The magical warriors having to be teenage girls. That's because they're easy to manipulate and create high amounts of emotional energy, which is what Cubay is harvesting.

[00:01:38]The monsters only attacking one at a time, just a byproduct of a witch's life cycle. The main character having an overpowered magical destinary. Homer repeatedly creating new timelines to save Moka, altering her destiny every time caused each subsequent version of Moka to gain the potential of every previous version combined. And most importantly of all, how come Moka never gives up hope? Simple. If anyone tells her it's a mistake to have hope, she'll just tell them they're wrong and they'll keep and she'll keep on telling them until they believe. That's why Moka Magika is so good because it's the quintessential magical girl series. It understands everything that makes magical girls so special. So, if you want to get a friend into a magical girl anime, you should recommend Moka.
