Secure loose wires.
>> There you go.
>> Okay, >> done.
>> Your boots.
>> Everybody's wearing boots, but not mom.
>> All right, let's go.
Okay, >> I'm going to try the power Look what I see.
already up looking around. Whole bunch of them.
Good job, mama.
This is the run to the litter. About half of them have socks on. They look hilarious.
So that's a hamrock, a hamster, a durac, and a guinea hog. They definitely have Moe's face. That's our guinea hog boar.
Okay, I'll put you back.
Piggies.
>> So, we came out here after dinner last night, and she she had just had them.
So, I think she had them at about dinner time last night. This is very exciting.
It's always a very happy time when babies are born on the homestead. It's just exciting. It's exciting. Like, spring is here. Babies are here. Yeah.
We went from having four pigs to now we have 14 pigs. That's a lot of pigs.
And this is the real reason We're following the chickens or following the cow with the chickens.
If you look at the cowpies, you'll see little pin holes in the cowpies. Maybe not that one. I stepped in that one. See that fly flying around?
Give a little sprinkling of some chicken feed that encourages the chickens to come scratch through and eventually it gets to where I don't have to sprinkle feed on the cowpies.
Chickens already know, hey, there's fly larvae in these cowpies.
And I will tell you, it drastically cuts down on the amount of flies when you are following 3 days behind the cow with your chickens. Come on, ladies.
First, brave soul.
All right, we just got to feed Stakes.
We'll move him to night. Chickens move in the morning. cow moves at night. All I have to do is tear down and set up one net every day.
>> He made his lease pile way bigger.
>> Yeah, he did.
I have some snacks.
>> Good afternoon, beautiful people.
Yeah, you just saw that back there. So, it's a new week. Last you saw, actually I think last you saw, I don't even remember what I was working on. I was getting ready for my inspection. Had my inspection, I failed. Big surprise, right? No, actually it was a whole bunch of nitpicky like I forgot nail plates.
Like I needed a nail plate right there and everything else is fine, but they're like, you know, go ahead and just add nail plates there and there and there and there and there and there and maybe one there and maybe one there. go. Yeah.
Everything they said, they're like, "It's not that big a deal, but just do it just so we can say you did it." And I was like, "Hey, no problem. No problem."
Now, there was a boo boo on me. I forgot smoke alarms. They were like, they kind of looked around. They're like, "These are all lights. Where's your smoke alarm?" I WAS LIKE, "OH, SNAP. I forgot smoke alarms." So, I had to run to Lowe's today, get smoke alarms. And from the stuff I was reading, when you do your framing inspection, your your big walkth through before you can close things up, uh, windows and doors were not a part of that. That was what my research had led me to believe. And they walked in, they're like, "We like to do it all in one inspection.
So, can you put your windows and doors in?" I was like, "Absolutely, but it just kind of slows the process down." And come to find out, I should have put my windows in quite a while ago because it is it is spring. Everybody's building everything and windows are 20 days out. So, I got to put my order in for windows and wait for several weeks.
Kind of a bummer. I was able to get a door. There's my door. That door will go and we will start getting this thing closed up. I'm super excited. So, on the docket today, I'm going to put in my smoke detectors real quick. It's super simple. I picked up an extra breaker.
Pop that in there. It's really very simple. You just put a couple more light boxes in and that's where the smoke detectors will go. Generally, everything else they're pretty happy with. Like I said, it was a bunch of like nitpicky little bitty just, oh, you need this, that, and the other thing. I was like, oh, how's everything else look? They're like, everything else looks great. So, I am like super excited. It's like, "Yes, let's let's keep rolling." So, kind of bummer I didn't pass with flying colors, but they actually at one point cuz I was asking so many questions cuz I want to know. It's like, "Hey, how do you feel about this? How do you feel about that?"
And they finally stopped and they're like, "We should have probably just done a walk through with you cuz you have so many questions." Asking them about how I'm planning on finishing this thing and, you know, little details I'm going to do. And one of the inspectors was like, "That's going to look really nice when you're done. I I kind of want to see it when you're done. This is going to look really really cool." So, you know, stuff like that. It's good to hear. Kind of kind of morale boost, I guess. Even though I mean, I got to go back and change add some stuff that I forgot. It's no big deal. It's all good.
First things first, I'm going to get these light boxes in for couple smoke detectors and nail plates. And I just basically followed them around with a notepad and took notes. There was some stuff I asked them if I needed and they're like, "Not really, but now that you bring it up, why don't you put it in?" like I got to add some fire blocking to this back wall over here, which I had already figured I was going to do and I asked about it and they were like, "Hadn't even thought about it, but you're right. It needs fire blocking." So, just knick-knack stuff. So, that's what I'll be doing today. Just picking up and putting in place the last few pieces.
They said they weren't going in here.
I found these at Lowe's. These weren't in stock when I was buying stuff. They have a nice little cleat. This would fit over a 2x4 or in my case, I can drive those into my uh roof rafters or my ceiling rafters.
And then I can pop a screw in there and like those aren't going anywhere. I really like that. That's a nice firm attachment bracket. I like those way better. These don't have any adjustment like my electrical boxes that I showed everybody, but I anytime I can find something heavier duty, I will. These are nice. Levy said put it right.
I like my inspector.
He's a good dude. He's kind of based in reality. He's reasonable.
You will actually see me physically check stuff off my list. Smoke detector boxes. Those are in. Let me just run the wire real quick. Install the breaker.
And those are ready.
Okay, time to start cutting lumber.
Luckily, I have lots of scraps of lumber.
All right. I know inevitably somebody's going to ask, "What the heck is fire blocking? What's it do?" It's really important in walls that go all the way up up into your attic. Um, in this case, the way we frame this wall, the walls go all the way from our bottom plate all the way up into attic attic storage space. We have wires in the walls.
hypothetical, I'm fine because the wires are so deep in the wall. But say say I was putting my drywall on with 3-in nails and I happen to pop a nail right through the stud right into where the wire is ran through there and it doesn't cause it to trip a breaker just yet. We insulate drywall and then you know months down the line, a year down the line, it just sits there and zap zap zap zap zap and then before you know it, it tries to start a fire. Well, the theory behind fire blocking is you block that fire in that that wall cavity to where it can't catch and burn all the way up to your attic and burn your whole house to the ground. In theory, there are all sorts of other precautions to avoid situations like that, like when you run your wire, run it in the middle of the board like that. Um, that way you know your your drywall, you know, half inch, 5/8, whatever drywall you're using, plus your screw.
I'm using inch and 5/8 drywall screws to attach it. They're only going to go that far. So, as long as your wires pass that, you never have to worry about hitting your wires. Otherwise, you'd have to use nail plates. Like, this is a great big nail plate. You would have to put those on every single stud where there's a wire. They sell them that are like they're only like that big, half that. This is a a jumbo one for my piping because my twoinch pipe where it goes through the floor, I pointed that out earlier. It would absolutely get hit by a drywall screw or a brad when I'm putting my trim on. I like to use 2in brads. I feel that they hold a lot better. I would absolutely poke a brad through the trim, the drywall, the wood into my pipe. Like that would just be my luck. So nail plate it is. That's the fire blocking. I'm going to start putting it in. I've got to put it in anyways. So, I'm going to put a piece right there. And I'm going to run my wire from the smoke detector back to my sub panel. And I have to get that piece of fire blocking in now. So, that's what I'm going to do. I think we're going to come in since I have all these nice little holes right there. So, there it is.
Do that one.
Do that one.
>> It's going to be close.
>> I don't know.
>> Be very close.
>> I don't know.
>> Going back to Lowe's today. We'll find out. Stay tuned. Get in there.
>> Oh, is it going in the light?
>> This is the box for the smoke detector.
>> Oh, okay. I thought those were a light >> there.
there.
Get me another staple in there.
My guesstimation was I would use about 250 ft, which is one roll.
>> Uh-huh. Look at that. You got like 5 ft left.
Don't be breaking my jar.
>> Don't be putting your jars in the construction.
>> You told me to put them there on that shelf.
I did what I was told.
>> I did 10.
>> You did one. How about that one?
That's the breaker I'm going to use. I only need probably that much.
That is probably almost >> 4T.
>> No, 5 and 1/2 ft.
>> Okay.
>> Probably 5T.
>> All right. Good job, mister. about 5 ft.
So, I needed 245 ft of wire.
>> There you go.
>> You would appreciate this.
>> I'm going to check it off.
>> Yeah, baby. Do it.
>> Smoke detectors done. Here's another easy one. I can check off one of us real quick. They're like, "Hey, this really needs to be secured."
>> Okay.
>> I was like, "Well, I kind of didn't have big enough stables." I found big enough stables.
>> Oh, hey, there you go. I was at Lowe's and it was like, you know what? I bet you they have staples big enough to do that. They did.
Okay, no more wiggly wiggly.
>> Secure loose wires.
>> There you go.
>> Okay, >> done.
>> All right. Okay, I'm going to work on blocking. Guess I need my tool belt.
>> Okay.
146.
Fire blocking check. Dry stop foam. We can do that right now. Okay, my fire blocking is in. Some of this stuff just feels like a complete waste of time.
like for real and I understand it's code, but some of it it's like just throw logic out the window. We need this to satisfy whatever. Anyways, get off my soap box. Well, I guess I was standing on a toolbox, not a soap box. We could put soap in it. That'd be a really big soap box. Anyways, I'm losing my mind in here in case you guys hadn't noticed.
Um, yeah. So, I've got the fire stopping foam that needs to get put in. I got some of this stuff. It's some great stuff. Not for you. Don't breathe it.
Don't smell it.
>> Great stuff.
>> It's great stuff. Let's do that.
>> Great stuff. If uh someone else is using it.
>> All right, let me dig through my box. I know I have the applicator nearby.
Oh no.
>> Oh no.
>> Oh no.
>> I'm up.
>> Well, hand me the cleaner. That's why I got cleaner.
Well, I can see the end now.
>> Hey, that's promising. If that's going to squirt acetone, then that means it's not plugged.
>> Cheese whiz.
Uh, I forget how nasty that stuff is to get all over your hands and the floor and your toolbox and your bucket of pipe parts and your PEX parts and everything.
It's everywhere. Now, that uh pistol was full of spray and I took the the tank off and I didn't realize how much pressure was still in that thing. I squeezed the trigger and I just all of the fire stopping foam or caulking as they said, caulking or foam. That's what code requires. It is in here, Brett. I got to get my notepad out. Take this.
Okay.
Dry stop holes done. Nail plates. I got to finish those.
Nail plates.
Boom. All right. I think I've done just about everything I can do today. I can cut that dryer vent hole, but it's literally just sit here with a hole saw and pop it through. If I have time this afternoon, I would really like to get this door in. Doors are easy, especially they come pre-framed. All right, it is afternoon, late afternoon, and we got all kinds of smells coming out of the kitchen, so I had to walk over here and talk about it. What you got going on over here?
I'm making mushroom spinach chicken gravy and tie tie is making spatzel.
>> Spatzel. It's all up there. Aha.
Spatzel. Sorry. Let me get the camera all up in your face. What are you doing?
>> Eating mushrooms.
>> Eating mushrooms.
>> So, I was going to serve this on rice, but Tyler was like, "Is that my festival?" Like, you go for it, son. Um, so I'm just sautΓ©ing the mushrooms and then I'm going to chop chuck this in there until it gets all wilty and I'll add like, you know, flour and chicken and broth and stuff like that.
>> So, it's like a chickeny mushroom spinach gravy. Sounds delicious.
>> Yep.
>> With spetszel.
>> Yeah.
>> I'm not going to lie, I was a little excited when I heard there's going to be spzel.
>> Okay, good.
>> I think everybody in the house loves spzel.
>> Yes, we do.
So, me and Meg just sat down and did some serious shopping, seeing if we could find windows anywhere. They are 2 weeks minimum or a month ordered from anywhere. I've got one more place I'm going to try. It's a local hardware store. They do windows. So, I'm going to actually go down there. They don't really have a website. Uh, so I'm going to go down there. I got to order windows. I wish I'd done that a while ago. Anyways, at least I got a door.
Kind of frustrating cuz now there's a like unknown hangup. The only hangup before has just been me and now I guess I'm still the hangup. Oh well.
>> Are you ready to eat dinner?
All right, I'm going to push pause on this. I got my little drain sill thing in or sill. Whatever. Threshold. That's the word I wanted. Got my threshold flashing.
I'm tired and hungry. Time to eat.
>> Yeah.
>> Dear heavenly father, thank you for today. Please bless this food for our bodies in Jesus name. Amen.
>> Made it by.
>> Oh, Tyler made it.
>> You're welcome. Ch. Thank you for making the Spzel. This is great.
>> Way too much spe. Let's get this door in. Okay, set it in a nice safe location.
>> Oh, yes. This is nice.
>> It's a door now. Not just an opening.
All right, I'm going to pull off that brick molding and I'm afraid I'm going to break it. I have to put flashing tape all around this whole door. Um, and you better believe I'm going to put that in.
You'll see it. Just Just keep an eye out for it. to see nice shiny aluminum looking uh Pella flashing tape sticking out from under all that. I'm tired of working on this. I've been working on this all day. So, I'm going to end this video right here. Wish I had a pile of windows put in, but >> yeah, >> it'll be a couple weeks on that. It looks nice. All right, that is going to do it for me for this video for today.
So, I'll catch you guys on the next one.
