During the Vietnam War, American troops faced severe challenges from the harsh jungle environment, including extreme heat, humidity, and constant mosquito infestations, which led to widespread drug abuse as soldiers sought relief from their difficult conditions. By 1971, over one in five American troops tested positive for drug use, causing squad disappearances, violent conflicts in barracks, and entire patrols being sent home. This environmental and psychological crisis significantly weakened military effectiveness and contributed to the US defeat in Vietnam, demonstrating that military success depends not only on combat capability but also on maintaining troop morale, mental health, and operational readiness.

One of America's Most Unexpected Enemies.Added:
One of America's worst defeats in Vietnam wasn't on the battlefield, but inside their own camp.
It was 1970, deep into the Vietnam War.
It was hot and humid.
Mosquitoes buzzed non-stop. [music] Soldiers sat in their camps waiting for days, sweating, rotting. They were fighting a war they didn't believe in.
They didn't trust their commanders. They felt forgotten.
So, when a local villager offered them a little medicine, something to calm their nerves, to sleep, to forget, they took it.
At first, no one cared. They still showed up. They followed orders.
And then, the inevitable happened.
They couldn't fight anymore.
By 1971, over one in five American troops [music] tested positive. Squads disappeared mid-mission.
Fights broke out in the barracks. Some couldn't walk straight. Entire patrols had to be sent home.
The White House was briefed, but the generals denied everything. Years later, President Nixon would call this one of the main reasons the US lost in Vietnam.
