Origins of Psychedelic Music BYRDS, Yardbirds, SONNY & SCHER, The Who, THE KINKS - 1965Added:
Hello. On today's episode of Erica Reacts, we'll be going over the origins of psychedelic music. This was actually a curated playlist by a donor. They were like, "Uh, here's some songs. I just wanted you to suggest to song like they basically gave me five songs. The Beach Boys and the Beatles forging the sound such as with a feedback into I feel fine." So, this is a origins of psychedelic music part one, hints of sounds to come.
and uh this person donated a bit. So, we are going to some of these I know. So, what we're going to do is I'm not going to listen to the full songs of this, but I'm going to try to identify very quickly aspects of each of these songs and let me see if I can see how how he chose these five songs and what that means. Okay, so Mr. Tambourine Man, I know this song, but do I know this version of Mr. Tambourine Man? Let's see. So, this is the birds, but it's spelled with a Y. 1965 American band the guitar tone [music] [singing] for me [music] I'm [singing] going to miss the [singing] [music] man I love the harmonies for mele.
I like the harmony [music and singing] >> and they have a very interesting guitar tone.
The sounds very trip upon your magic swirling ship. All my senses [music] have been stripped and my hands can't feel to grip and my toes too numb [music] to step. wait only for my booty.
>> So, it's kind of like an ostenado pattern. The uh instrumental part is kind of repeating repeating repeating, but it has this very quality on the tone of the guitar. And then the way they do the harmony, I could see that being used later, like very similar style. Uh, the way he sings is very interesting, but they sound amazing. I love that song. Isn't that a Bob Dylan song? If I'm wrong, comment it and say, "Oh my god, how could you think it's a pop?" I think it is. Okay. Uh, a who song? I don't know. Maybe we'll hear the whole three minutes. Who knows?
>> Awesome.
>> Interesting. [music] I can go anywhere we are. [music] I can live anywhere.
>> Like the backup singers.
Well, this does not sound like the voo I heard. [music] [music] Anyway, it's nice anyway.
[music] Okay, psychedelic land. [music] A soulful way to sing.
[music] >> [music] >> A lot of cacophony a lot of distance.
[music] Another shaking the camera.
[music] [music] [music] >> [music] [music] >> Very [music] on the tone of that guitar [music] anyhow [singing] go [music] anywhere anywhere I >> [music] [music] >> And the way the way I do it, [music] the way I walk [music] the second drone repeat [music] creates a feeling of dismember interesting and the crowd went wild. Okay, they had some backup singers. But yeah, I think that droning just having the bass repeat gives you like a drone feeling repetition that like it makes you feel something. Interesting. Interesting. So, we went from Tambourine Man to the Who.
All right. Yard Birds. I've reacted to the Yard Birds. I think maybe one or two things. I like them as I remember. Let's [music] hear.
I've heard this song before.
>> [music] >> Can I react to this one? Let's find out.
[music] >> Yes, this is what I reacted to.
>> I don't have to listen to the whole thing here. You can watch the whole reaction. And [music] if she says to you she don't love me, just give her my message.
[music] And I know she had me back again.
I would never make her sad. I know.
So Right. [music] [music] They have the little [music] >> I think that whole like [singing] that kind of melody heard that another psychedelic music.
Don't forget guys, I have an episode where someone wanted to introduce me to the psychedel like San Francisco psychedelic scene and they had me listen to the Monterey Pop Festival with Janice Jofflin quicksilver messenger service from the Fillmore and they had me listen to Jefferson Airplane. So I have a psychedelic music episode already. Now this I have you if you want to hear my first time of listening to the Rirds I just published it to everybody. It was from a live stream I did a few weeks ago. Um, but I heard this in a live. But I can hear the little again the guitar has that tone and I think something about that chord change. It's something we hear later.
It's very characteristic of the thing.
All right, now we're at the kinks. Now, I do have one video where I listen to four Kink song and then separately I listen to Celluloid Heroes. Um, so this is probably my 1 2 3 4 5. This is like my sixth Kink song I've listened to.
I've liked everything I've heard of the Kinks. Um, they're great, but let's see if this is a direct descendant because the person who curated this list for me.
I mean, they're trying to have me listen to I'm looking for something that they're they're hearing. So, let's see.
This looks like older Kings, though, from what I listen to. Well, I definitely did not see a video of them.
I listened to some Spotify tracks. Okay, check out that video, too. It's like Erica reacts to the Kings, like Celluloid, uh, like Lola.
Um, gentlemen something. I don't know.
You'll look it up.
Oh, yeah. That weird overtone in the guitar. [music] They have that effect.
[music] Yeah. [music] Heat.
[music] [music] The melody goes [music] all I like that [music] this is considered psychedelic.
I like that.
She just [music] [music] Heat. HEAT. HEAT.
[music] [singing] >> [music] [music] >> I like it. It reminds me, honestly, there's some Beatles songs that sound like this. [music] I'm still helps [music] psychedelic.
It's like a mix of help with rubber. See [music] what it sounds like.
That part sounds like a Beatles song from like [music] now we sound like we're on Revolver.
forever. I like it a lot. [music] But that part sounds like if you're listening [singing] about the space between us [singing] now, it's the same melody.
You know George Harrison make love all the time make love singing songs.
Sorry everyone's like why do you compare everything to the Beatles? I'm like it sounds like the Beatles but the other part like the verse part of this song sounds like something that could have been on help. I can't think of which song it is but like cuz you like me too much and I like you.
I really do. That's the Beatles pre-scedic album, Help, which is one of my favorite. But you hear in Help, they're like pushing boundaries, which I why I love Help so much and cuz I grew up with the movie.
If you leave me, I will follow you and bring me back. See, that song is like pure just rock but sounding good. And then this is mixing help with rubber soul or revolver. Okay. One of those like when it's getting a little bit more. Okay. Cuz in within one song I'm saying like one part of the song sounds like help, one part sounds like rubber soul/resolver. Revolver.
if you're listening. [music] [music] [music] Okay, I liked it. And yes, there were some things that sounded like. Okay, now I got you, babe. But this is a very famous song. I never thought of this as psychedelic, but let's see. Oh, it's because of the orchestration.
>> [music] >> They're making some >> She's so pretty.
[music and singing] >> There's nothing like seeing young share.
They're so just like [music] >> and he's not pretty to look at.
>> It's like a Beauty and the Beast situation with them [music and bell] really.
>> Babe, she's like a 10. He's like a >> a three.
>> I got you, babe. Like there's a big disparity in their looks.
[music] >> He's so pretty.
>> And he thinks you're like, but at least I'm [music] sure >> he makes the average guy feel good about himself, you know? And it's like, wow, maybe I could get a girl like Sher, you know? [music] >> I got you, babe.
>> I got you, babe.
I got my [music] house in [singing] the face.
[music] [bell] >> I got you to wear my ring. [singing and music] And I'm sad you're a clown. [music and bell] >> Pick a perfect.
[singing] [music] >> Nice.
[music] I don't care. I can't.
When you smile, he looks better. Maybe like >> she's still like a 910. [music] mountain. We can't fly. [singing] [music] Babe, [bell] I got you, babe.
I got you, babe.
[music and bell] [music] I got you to hold my hand. I got you.
I [music and bell] got you. Walk with me. I got you. Walk with me. I got you.
[music] I got you.
I got you.
[music] I got you.
I got you, babe.
I got you, babe. [music] I got you, babe.
I got [music] you, babe. [bell] I got you, babe.
[music] I got you, babe.
>> Okay. Well, I've heard that song before and I hadn't, you know, I never I only saw Sher when she was already doing like do you believe in life after love, you know, so I forgot about her youthful beauty. I've seen pictures before of her young, but to see her like this young singing and then she's much more attractive than Sunny Bono.
So, it makes the average guy feel like I can get a nine or a 10, you know?
Sunonny Bono did it. He's uh he must be really nice or rich or something. I don't know. I guess they could sing together. Did he produce the music? He discovered her talent and then like helped her become a star. Um, but I think she was married to someone else and then yeah, then didn't he die in like a skiing accident? Like he hit a tree or something, but that was more recent. But I don't know. Okay. Well, that was an interesting tour of the origins of psychedelic music part one from my donor. Um, what are my takeaways?
that there's some similar threads between them all. To me, it just sounds very 60s.
I never thought of I Got You Babe as pre- psychedelic, but okay. Maybe just the guitar tone in the beginning and kind of the what I like to call ostanado because it kind of repeats the d throughout which you see in some psychedelic music. So, I'm guessing there's going to be a part two because this person who curated this must have some kind of grand plan for me. So, that was part one of his list. Five songs.
And uh All right. Well, what do you guys think about that? Do you think those are actually related to each other? Do you think those are actually pre-schedelic?
Do you think those particular songs are important? Um, what am I missing? What did I totally not notice? What am I just not paying attention to? Feel free to comment that because I am just a woman.
I'm, you know, I'm not an expert in psychedelic music. I just studied opera and I teach singing and I know a lot about music theory, but I could have missed a lot. So, feel free to comment that. I don't take it as an insult. I take it as education. So, sometimes people write me like a mean comment like, "You don't know anything?" D. I'm like, "Yeah, I'm here to learn. I have growth mindset. How about you tell me what you know instead of just insulting me for not knowing?" You know? I think the fact that I'm open to be vulnerable and say I don't know makes insecure people feel bad about themselves because they feel that they need to know everything. I don't know. So, just if you have something to teach me and it's positive, comment it.
And if you comment a mean comment, it's good for the algorithm anyway. So, it's a win-win for me. All right. When my request form opens again, you can find it on my link tree. You'll know because this will work. In the meantime, only my highest level of members are allowed to request right now as of March 9th, my benefactors and my premium. It's like benefactor premium, whatever. So, that's on my Patreon and my YouTube. And that's just because I need to control the amount of requests coming in cuz I got so popular cuz guess what happened today, guys? March 9th, guess what happened? I woke up to 20,000 subscribers and I was like, I had a dream, a song to sing [singing] to help me through with [singing] anyway. So, I woke up with 20,000 subs and was like, whoa. So, because of that, I have to start to limit access. 20,000 of you and one of me. I have I can only do so many things in a week. So, thank you. But anyway, we'll figure out how the channel grows as we grow. We'll just we're just going to roll it, roll it, rolling.
We're just gonna organically grow it.
All right. Thank you for being here. Let me know about this psychedelic music stuff. All right. Take care and bye.
