The analysis sharply exposes how 90s sitcom tropes weaponized Chandler’s vulnerability to reinforce a rigid, heteronormative hierarchy of masculinity. It effectively highlights the systematic deconstruction of his character to serve as a cautionary tale against gender non-conformity.

The Feminization of ChandlerAñadido:
Chandler in Friends is constantly effeminized throughout the show. In comparison to Joey and Ross, Chandler has often been framed in the narrative of Friends as being soft, weak, and effeminite. And there are subtle ways the show goes about framing Chandler as being not only the less masculine one in the group, but especially effeminite.
So, in today's video, I want to talk about the not so subtle ways the narrative of Friends shapes the framing around Chandler being effeminite.
One of the main ways friends subtly paints the idea in our mind that Chandler is a feminite is in his inability to pick up women. Nice going.
You just saved yourself a couple months of sex.
>> Out of all the guys in the group, Chandler is presented as struggling the most with attracting and maintaining a long-term relationship with women.
>> All right, relax, Mr. I've had sex four times.
Four different women. I've had sex way more times.
>> How many?
>> Nine.
>> Ross is a hopeless romantic and throughout the show gets married three times. And while Joey has no interest in long-term relationships, he has no issue attracting many women, but Chandler often struggles to attract women altogether or ends up sabotaging any relationship he happens to stumble into.
In fact, his inability to attract women forces him to constantly resort to being in a relationship with Janice, the only woman who seems to unequivocally be obsessed with Chandler. He constantly runs back to her despite not really liking her and finding her annoying.
Throughout the show, he constantly reignites his relationship with her because he fails to attract any other woman. And so he enters this cycle of settling for Janice, being unhappy, and breaking up with her, and reaching out to her again when he fails at finding a partner. That has been the case for so long. China has a reputation in the show of being notoriously bad with women.
>> From now on, I get the dates and you have to stay home on Saturday nights watching Ready Set Cook.
>> So much so that even an instance where Joey and Chandler were both attracted to the same woman, Joey just assumed she would be more attracted to him than Chandler. I was thinking about uh asking her for her number.
>> Thanks, man. But I think it makes a stronger statement if I ask for it myself, you know?
>> Chandler was very insulted by the idea, but everyone else pretty much assumed Chandler would not be considered as attractive or more attractive than Joey.
>> What do you mean? Like if you didn't, I wouldn't have a shot.
>> I don't like to say it out loud, but yeah.
And so the idea of Joey letting Chandler have women he's not interested in is somewhat reinforced in the show.
>> All right. Means that much. Yeah. I'll let you have her. Thanks.
>> What? Let me have her.
>> Even when the show tries to subvert this expectation by having the attractive woman be more interested in Chandler.
>> Have to say Chandler.
>> Yes.
>> He still in the end sabotaged and ruined his opportunity.
>> You suck. I rule all mini wave in celebration of me and woohoo.
>> I am now thinking I would like to change my answer to no one.
>> If Joey and Chandler are ever interested in the same woman, it is often times framed as Chandler never being able to live up to Joey.
>> It's not a big deal.
>> Well, it is to me. You wanted to sleep with Batman and instead you had to settle for Robin.
It's also interesting how the show puts Chandler in situations to get humiliated through being emasculated. In one episode, Chandler reunites with a childhood friend he teased when they were younger.
>> Susie Moss, fourth grade glasses. I used to carry around a box of animal crackers like a purse.
>> Susie Moss. They began a romantic relationship where she would oftent times push Chandler sexually, culminating in him wearing her underwear.
>> Have you ever worn women's underwear?
Kind of sexy if you wore mine tonight at dinner.
>> But it is revealed that she was only interested in dating Chandler as part of her elaborate plan to get revenge on him for teasing her when they were younger.
>> You pulled up my skirt and the entire auditorium saw my underpants.
That was in the FOURTH GRADE. HOW COULD YOU STILL BE UPSET ABOUT THAT?
>> WELL, UM, why don't you call me in 20 years and tell me if you're still upset about this?
>> Which left Chandler wearing women's underwear stuck in a bathroom stall with his friends making fun of him?
>> I'm wearing panties.
>> You uh you always wear panties. It's interesting to note that even though that act in of itself doesn't have to necessarily be emasculating within the narrative of friends, it is.
>> Chandler's wearing panties.
>> What?
>> Let me see.
>> No, no, you don't have to see.
>> Hi, Tushy.
>> Even in his relationship with Monica, there is this undercurrent idea of Monica settling for Chandler out of convenience.
>> He's just he's so irresistible.
Really? The the scientist guy? Really, Chandler?
>> Continue.
>> It is clear that Monica and Chandler really care for each other. But since season 1, when they floated the idea of Monica and Chandler being together, it was from this framework of both of them after having fully exhausted all other romantic possibilities and scared of ending up alone. They would get together when they're older.
>> All right, I'll tell you what. When we're 40, if neither of us are married, what do you say you and I get together and have one?
>> Why won't I be married when I'm 40?
>> It was also always framed in a way where it would just be a friendly arrangement.
In fact, Monica was offended at the idea that she wouldn't find anyone to be with and would have to settle for Chandler.
>> No, I I just meant hypothetically.
>> Okay. Hypothetically, why won't I be married when I'm 40?
>> No.
>> So, there was never really any serious intention of them ending up together. In fact, even in an alternate story line where everything is different and everyone has made different choices, there is still this idea that even though Monica and Chandler do also end up in this universe, it only happened because they both failed so spectacularly at finding any other partner and had already exhausted all of their options and so just had to settle for each other.
>> Really win. You want to do it with me?
>> Okay.
I was kidding.
>> So was I.
>> Even in the alternate universe, Chandler is depicted as being very ineffective with women to the point where he's only ever had sex with one person.
>> I've had sex four times.
>> Four different women. I've had sex way more times.
>> For me, I've got those four other women to compete with. Well, if it helps.
There were only three.
And >> with the other two women, there was just one woman, wasn't there?
>> No, there were two, >> including me.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Even the circumstance under which Monica and Chandler begin their relationship was because Monica was feeling insecure about her brother getting married and her constantly having failed relationships.
>> My mother's right. Never going to get married. She began her physical relationship out of a need for validation and comfort and through that they were able to build a very happy healthy relationship. At first the relationship was mostly physical but over time they began to truly care for each other. But in the beginning the main appeal of their relationship was the physical aspect and also the fact that they were sneaking around and that they were keeping it a secret from everyone even their closest friends. It represented an escape for both of them.
A secret only they shared.
What were we thinking?
>> I'm coming over tonight though, right?
>> Oh, yeah, definitely.
>> What's also interesting is that they were initially very hesitant to ascribe any greater meaning to the relationship out of fear that it wouldn't mean as much to the other person.
>> We're just, you know, we're nothing.
We're goofing around.
It's also worth noting that once they became a couple, Chandler took on somewhat of a submissive role in the relationship and is framed in the show as being emasculating.
>> Do you guys have any extra ribbons?
>> Oh, yeah, sure. What do you need? We got lace, satin, satine, raphia, gingham, felt, and I think my testicles may be in here, too.
Even though he's supportive, takes an interest in her, and is extremely accommodating of her needs, the show frames it as emasculating.
>> Taylor, where are your tools?
>> Oh, I left them on my bulldozer.
>> I don't have tools.
>> Well, I do, but Rachel borrowed them. To further reinforce that comparison, Monica will sometimes be masculineized within the context of the narrative to make the joke that she's the man in the relationship and Chandler is the woman.
>> I brought reinforcements.
>> Oh, great. What? You brought Joey?
>> Well, I brought the next best thing.
>> Chandler. You brought Chandler. The next best thing would be Monica.
>> To add insult to injury, we learn later on in the show that Chandler wasn't even Monica's first choice in a hookup in London. she was actually hoping to hook up with Joey. The entire basis of their relationship and how they became a couple is recontextualized to imply that Monica settled for Chandler when her first choice was unavailable.
When I went to your room that night, I was actually looking for Joey.
It's also justified in the narrative that Joey would be Monica's first choice if all she needed was someone to make her feel good in a moment of weakness and that between Joey and Chandler, Joey would have been better at meeting Monica's needs. Monica assures Chandler that she made the right decision in choosing him and reaffirms her love for him. But the new context just further supports the idea that Chandler is not great with women or would be a woman's first choice. Another way the show effeminizes Chandler is by framing him as unmasculine in comparison to the other men in the show. Since the beginning, Chandler was characterized as being wimpy, weak, and soft in comparison to Joey and Ross. That characterization at times took on a literal element where some plot points centered around Chandler being feminine.
In one episode, after taking up smoking again, Chandler struggles to break the habit, which annoys his friends. To help him quit, Rachel offers him a hypnosis tape her friend used that helped her stop smoking.
>> Strong, confident woman does not need to smoke. A strong, confident woman.
>> After listening to the tips every night while sleeping, Chandler was able to quit smoking, but with one weird side effect.
>> I haven't smoked yet today. I feel great and and and confident. That is a stunning blouse.
Chander literally became more effeminite within the narrative through the power of suggestion.
What?
>> It's always interesting that these are the story lines given to Chander to constantly reinforce the idea in our minds that he's a feminite.
>> Okay. Just because he buys you dinner does not mean you owe him anything.
>> I know.
>> This is a recurring framing device in the show. Even in his friendship with Joey, there are many times where Joey and Chandler's friendship imitates that of a romantic relationship. The juxtaposition of seeing straight men navigating their friendships in the same way they would a romantic relationship is the joke. Chandler is always relegated to playing the feminine role in the dynamic while Joey always assumes the masculine. In one plot point, Joey, after becoming a successful soap actor, decides he's making enough money to move into his own apartment. What would have been an ordinary right of passage of moving into your own place became symbolic for a romantic couple breaking up.
>> I saw the way you were checking out his moldings.
You want it? Why would I want another apartment? Huh? I've already got an apartment that I love. Well, it wouldn't kill you to say it once in a while.
>> Chandler was disappointed that Joey didn't seem to have a more emotional attachment to their dynamic beyond just being roommates. So, for the purposes of the joke, Chandler is a neglected woman asking the indifferent man to stop taking her for granted and cherish her.
>> So bent out of shape for her. Huh? It's not like we agreed to live together forever. We're not Bert and Ernie.
Look, you know what? If this is the way you feel, then maybe you should take it.
>> Eventually, Joey does move out, and in his absence, both Chandler and Joey struggle to readjust to no longer living together. They mourn the end of their living situation the same way one would mourn the end of a relationship.
Chandler even went as far as to get a rebound by getting a new roommate Eddie who Joey immediately feels threatened by.
>> Whose eggs do you like better? His or mine, huh? Well, I like both eggs equally.
>> Oh, come on. Nobody likes two different kinds of eggs equally. You like one better than the other, and I want to know which.
>> Again, the dynamic is played out similarly to a relationship with Joey being disappointed at at how quickly Chandler moved on. Neither of them fully willing to admit to each other how much they loved and needed each other. Yet, even in a dynamic where the joke is about a straight friendship mirroring a romantic dynamic, it is Chandler who is epheminized by the narrative. Joey's masculinity is reaffirmed by his emotional distance. And Chandler is epheminized by being disappointed with a lack of intimacy from his friend.
>> Your eggs aren't here anymore, are they?
>> YOU TOOK YOUR EGGS and you left.
Did you really expect me to never find new eggs?
>> I honestly do like this joke a lot of two straight friends symbolize a romantic couple and friends does this joke a lot especially with Joey and Chandler. In another episode, Chandler is again relegated to the more feminine role of the dynamic when Joey on a whim decided to adopt a baby chick and duck.
>> Stayed home from work today while you were rehearsal so somebody could be here with our chick. Hey, who was up from 2:00 this morning until 5:00 this morning trying to get her back to sleep?
>> You don't think I get up when you get up? In this framing, the animals are Joey and Chandler's children. Yet, Chandler takes on most of the domestic labor, similarly to how a woman would be expected to in this dynamic.
>> I was working all day, and you don't think taking care of our chick is work?
That's not what I said. Okay. I just meant I know what you meant.
>> Chandler is always in the feminine role.
It's never shared between them. Joey gets to sherk his responsibility and continue to be the emotionally distant man while Chandler demands more effort from him, pleading and begging for intimacy like an emotionally volatile woman. Here it comes. I'm stuck here all day. And then you come in and spend two seconds with us and then expect to go off gallivanting with your friends.
Well, I don't think so, mister. And it seems at some point early on, they decided that the idea of Chandler falling into feminine roles or behaviors was going to be a recurring joke because there are many off-handed jokes about Chandler accidentally doing something feminine or being perceived as weak.
>> Don't worry, this doesn't make you any less of a guy.
That does.
>> Saw a girl with that vest.
>> Thanks.
>> One of the most prominent ways the show effeminizes Chandler is through questioning his sexuality. Since the beginning of the show, there's been this recurring joke of people mistaking Chandler for being gay.
>> Cute. He's funny.
>> He's a he.
>> Well, yeah.
Oh god, I just I feel like >> it's never explicitly said why people seem to have this assumption beyond the fact that Chandler is portrayed as being a very sensitive person. All the ways in which Chandler fails at being traditionally masculine opens him up for people to make assumptions about his sexuality. Is >> that ridiculous? Can you believe she actually thought that?
>> Um, yeah.
Well, I mean, when I first met you, you know, I thought maybe possibly you might be.
>> In one episode, Chandler has to navigate those assumptions, and we see where this becomes an insecurity of Chandler's because his perceived queerness, it feminizes him within the narrative.
Behind every Chandler is gay joke is the idea that he's so feminized that he likes men.
>> So, uh, what is it about me?
>> I don't know. Cuz you're smart. You're funny. Moss is smart and funny. Did you ever think that about him?
>> Yeah, right.
>> And so that being a prominent aspect of his characterization constantly reinforces in our mind the idea that Chandler is feminine. Even the narrative choice of Chandler's father being trans kind of paints the idea of Chandler's querness running in the family. Almost as if he inherited his femininity from his father. If I turn into my parents, I'll either be an alcoholic blonde chasing after 20-year-old boys or I'll end up like my mom.
>> Even when we find out about the reason why Chandler notoriously hates Thanksgiving, there is this framing of the backstory of Chandler's father's querness ruining and disrupting his life.
>> Leave with the house boy then with me.
more turkey, Mr. Chandler.
>> And so the show will make constant references over the years of Chandler being mistaken for being gay in a way that never happens to Joey or Ross. So Chandler seems especially epheminized in comparison. While watching Friends, I never really understood why it was always assumed Chandler was feminine.
Even that first episode where they made the first Chandler is gay joke, it took me by surprise because Chandler never seemed more especially effeminate or weak in comparison to Joey or Ross. But as the show went on, it added certain narrative plot points to continually chip away at Chandler's masculinity and reinforce in our mind the idea that he's more feminine than the other male characters. Tell everyone in your class that you are as gay as the day is long >> because I told everyone he slept with dinosaurs.
>> Well, that's clearly a joke. This could easily be true.
>> So, that's it. Those are my thoughts. Be sure to let me know what you think down below. Remember to like, comment, and subscribe, and I'll see you guys in the next one.
