Why Being Discarded Hurts So Bad

[00:00:00]Why does being discarded hurt so much more than being the one who did the discarding? Why is this? Okay, I've got a degree in cognitive science. I studied this for a living. And it's not because one person loved more than the other.

[00:00:09]It's because only one of the nervous systems had to absorb the impact. And no, this doesn't make the other person evil. Okay? But it does make the experience wildly unequal. Both experiences are real for sure, but they are not equal in impact. Okay? If you were discarded, it didn't feel like a breakup. It felt like emotional whiplash. One day you're safe, the next day you're disposable. No fight, no warning, no repair. Okay, here are the three reasons why that is so freaking painful to your nervous system. Okay, so number one, your nervous system didn't get a landing. When connection is warm, consistent, and real, your nervous system starts to organize around it.

[00:00:45]Okay, you relax, you orient, you build an expectation of continuity. Okay. So, when that connection disappears without warning, your body doesn't just register choice. It registers literally freef fall. Okay. You you aren't just grieving a person. You're trying to land after being released midair. Okay. And number two, your system goes into threat, not insecurity. This isn't anxious attachment. This isn't weakness. Sudden relational rupture activates survival circuitry as old as time itself. Okay?

[00:01:15]Abandonment distress, threat detection, attachment panic. Your admitted lights up. Your body goes into hypervigilance.

[00:01:21]Your mind starts searching for meaning.

[00:01:23]Not because you're broken, not because you're freaking anxiously attached, but because your nervous system is trying to reestablish safety after shock. Okay.

[00:01:30]Number three, the stress cycle never gets to complete for you. Here's what most people freaking miss. This is the most important one.

[00:01:38]This is the most important one. The person who leaves often experiences relief. Distance regulates them. Control returns. But the person who was left stays suspended. No explanation, no repair, no gradual descent. So the nervous system keeps asking, "What just happened? Is this even real? I can't even believe this, what changed? What did I miss?" That's why it takes longer to heal, even for secure people. So what looks like overthinking is actually unfinished survival energy and trauma.

[00:02:07]And an open loop, your brain cannot close, which it hates. One nervous system sought relief. The other took the impact to the freaking dome.
