The Stanford Prison Experiment demonstrates how ordinary individuals can quickly adopt abusive roles when placed in positions of authority, as guards in the 1971 study systematically dehumanized prisoners through humiliating drills, arbitrary rules, and psychological manipulation, revealing how institutional power structures can transform normal people into oppressors.

Inside the Stanford Prison Experiment: Psychological warfare between guards and inmates.Hinzugefügt:
one of the guards. We called him John Wayne.
They gave me the nickname John Wayne.
It's kind of curious because John Wayne never played evil characters in his films. He always played the hero. Well, we were all against the Vietnam War.
John Wayne came out in full support of the Vietnam War. So, if you're an evil dude, you're an enemy. What the hell are you talking about? You're John Wayne. He kept doing irritating things.
>> You tell me who's boss.
At first, I tried to make it kind of entertaining. And I would make up the drills as I pretty much went along. Say something. 1 2 3 4 It was uh singing stupid songs, or it was telling the guy next to you that you loved him. Anything that we thought would be kind of humiliating for guys. Down. Up. Down. We had them refer to us as yes, Mr. Correctional Officer. Prisoners must address the guards as Mr. Correctional Officer. Prisoners must address the guards as Mr. Correctional Officer. We referred to them by their numbers. How must prisoners address themselves? By number only. How? By number only. So, all things designed to sort of dehumanize the prisoners. Laughing and joking and they told us to chant something we would bastardize it somehow.
>> I'd like it to sound like football cheer. GO 1 2 3 GIVE ME A 5.
AND YOU KNOW THAT the guards couldn't hurt you. I mean, you know, it's an experiment for God's sakes. We're all white middle class students. What are you going to do to us?
