Man suspected of assaulting 77-year-old appears in a Seattle court

[00:00:00]A 77-year-old man attacked unprovoked in downtown Seattle, according to police.

[00:00:05]Now, one of the two suspects police believe attacked him faced a judge this morning. Cairo 7's Ranjini was in King County Court and tells us what happened during Deshawn Ellion's arraignment.

[00:00:17]The video shocked people and grabbed headlines around the country. On April 19th around 10:00 p.m. at 3rd and Pine in downtown Seattle, a 77-year-old man was attacked unprovoked by two men. The victim ended up with a head injury, a broken arm and knee. This morning, 27-year-old Deshawn Ellion appeared in court accused of being one of the two men involved in the attack.

[00:00:37]>> So, you're being charged by way of information with one count of assault in the second degree. The video shows two men approaching the victim and one falls on top of him. After the attack, the men walk around talking while the victim's on the ground. Enter the even not guilty. Ellion in a wheelchair said almost nothing in court this morning as a plea was entered. His attorney asked for the court to reduce his $100,000 bail, but prosecutors argued he had a prior record of not showing up for court. Prosecutors say since 2018, he's had about 40 instances of not appearing for court. The judge says there's been numerous bench warrants issued against Ellion swaying his decision on bail. The allegations here which is probable cause to believe involved the attack on the street attack on a 77-year-old that is allegedly unprovoked.

[00:01:23]So, of course, that kind of offense is quite concerning. So, I am going to deny the request bail will remain the same. A second man, 29-year-old Amit Osman, was also arrested and charged with assault. He's expected in court tomorrow. Ellion is expected back in court on June 4th. In Seattle, Ranjini Cairo 7 News.
