Assam Set To Approve Uniform Civil Code: Reports

[00:00:06]The government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma is all set to give approval to one of their poll promises. Assam is all set to give its approval for the uniform civil code. So far, remember, two BJP-ruled [music] states have approved the legislation, Uttarakhand and Gujarat, and Assam could be the next state in line. Himanta Biswa Sarma will take a key decision in his very first meeting in the cabinet after taking oath as the chief minister. So, he has been picked as the CM for the second consecutive time, and this could be one of the many first decisions that his government could be announcing. I don't want to go across to Piyush Goyal on that quick note. Piyush, this is in line with the promise made by the home minister on multiple occasions in the run-up to elections in Assam. So, it's a reiteration in that sense, if at all this comes out to be one of the big announcements. But, we've also seen constant opposition to this. Many in the opposition have opined that this uh interferes with religious freedom, as has been in the case of other states where the BJP has made a similar move.

[00:01:05]Give us a sense of how this is going to play out the next few hours. What are sources telling you?

[00:01:10]Well, today afternoon, when Himanta Biswa Sarma, you know, chairs his first cabinet meeting after having taken over the 3.0 government and 2.0 Himanta Biswa Sarma Sarma government, this key decision is going to take shape, given the fact that this is part of the poll promise that the BJP has had, not just here in the state of Assam, but also across the entire country. 2014, 2019, 2024, they all have uh seen this being mentioned. The uniform civil code has to become a reality. Since it is a state subject, state by state that is going to get approved as well. You already see uh that approval in Uttarakhand. You already see that approval in Gujarat. Uh today, it's going to be Assam. Multiple states, including Maharashtra, have already committed that they're going to make make sure that this legislation becomes a reality. Dating back to what the prime minister said a couple of years ago, I think it's even just after 2024, when he was speaking at a rally in Madhya Pradesh, he said, "How can you have different rules for different sons in a family?"

[00:02:04]The sons have to be governed by the same laws in a single family. That's That's the reason the importance of uniform civil code is absolutely important. It has to make sure that there's uniformity as far as inheritance is concerned. You know, the various laws that are governing the country, whether it's, you know, marriage laws, divorce laws, they all have to be the same as well. So, on those lines, Himanta Biswa Sarma's government is expected to give its approval to the uniform civil code. It's a small cabinet which was sworn in yesterday along with Dr. Sarma. And they're going to take this decision forward and make sure that, you know, there's a process which is really followed. You set up a committee.

[00:02:35]Generally, the committee had retired Justice Ranjana Desai on it in both the states as well. A committee will be formed. The committee's reports will be submitted to the cabinet and then the cabinet further takes it up as well. We think that really becoming a reality in Tripura coming up 5 years state and then Gujarat. So, we're expecting that to become a reality sometime soon in Assam.

[00:02:53]It's going to be a bigger, stronger, and a more decisive government in 2026.
