Prom Night 4k UHD Review | Synapse Films
Added:[music] >> What's up, everyone? I hope you love slasher films because Synapse Films released a classic, and I'm talking about 1980s Prom Night starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Leslie Nielsen. And Jamie Lee Curtis is simply mesmerizing in this movie. I mean, the girl can dance. Hello. She She was simply mesmerizing in this movie.
I'm not going to lie, man. I'm I'm not going to be as It was She was fantastic in this movie. And Synapse Films, they did a fantastic job with this 4K transfer. I'm just telling you right up front, this is a great 4K transfer by them, which is kind of no surprise because they have done an amazing job in all of their transfers. Um the only one that I'm missing is Hunter's Blood.
That's the only one that I'm missing with the deluxe limited editions. Um but this, guys, this has a new 4K transfer, a new scan from the camera negative, and it has Dolby Atmos. And I'm going to talk about both of those here in a second. But first, hit that like and subscribe button. If you do, I greatly appreciate it. Check out those tier memberships. Hype this video up as well because Synapse did a wonderful job. So, Prom Night. What's it about? It's It's a slasher film set in a school setting, and Jamie Lee Curtis, I mean, besides being a fantastic dancer, it's just like your typical high school setting. It's It's prom. This takes place on prom night, prom day, and just little events taking up place. In the beginning of the film, however, there is a tragic incident that happens um when these young kids are playing a game that's called like hunters hunters game and they are evil to this one little girl and something happens 6 years later boom it's prom day and just leading everything else leading up to that prom night and I'm there are this movie is kind of tame if you you know to for today's standards however there are a couple good um kill moments and gory not really gory but some surprisingly good killer moments and the music man the music was popping I absolutely love it this is night and eight 1980 film however you you know this movie was made in like 78 79 and the colors to this I'm just going to talk about the 4K transfer no wait let let me show off this design because who whomever is the artist I couldn't find it here on the back so I greatly apologize I'm going to have it here this artwork is incredible I absolutely love it it reminds me of uh the Frankenhooker now I don't know if it's done by the same artist I think it is it's fantastic this is the back of it right there looks really really nice again here is the front spectacular there is some spot glossing on prom night and on the spine as well there we go and and for the case this is a double this is this has a reversible sleeve and there is one I switched mine cuz when you get it you get this version right here. And I just prefer this one my girl Jamie Lee Curtis.
Um and then when you open it up, you get the booklet, the Synapse catalog right there. And then you just remove it, you get the Blu-ray and 4K. I love that I love that they're doing art design on the disc.
I think every label should do that. Just makes it more um I don't know. Just better to look at and I don't know. I just really love it. So I'm just going to talk about the transfer now and the audio.
4K transfer is Dolby Vision taken from the camera negative 35 mm.
It looks really, really good. There is a glowing kind of filter throughout the entire picture, but besides that, it is a crisp picture. The colors to this, I think it's one of the better 4K transfers this year that the those colors are primary colors are just simply popping. There's a couple dark scenes and you get a nice deep black to it, but the colors, oh my gosh. It's like a damn rainbow full of colors in this movie. It is I think this movie has high rewatchability factor just on the 4K transfer itself. It looks beautiful. Fantastic job Synapse Films.
This has Dolby Atmos and DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0.
I listened to it in the Dolby Atmos and it was a solid immersive experience. There's like some subtle um, where you actually do get a bubble effect whenever towards the end, uh, or whenever there is that PA announcer in the high in the high school, uh, in the beginning of the film when the kids are playing the game, the hunter game, uh, you do get some type of echo in the hallway and throughout in the surround, so that was pretty cool.
Other than that, it's just kind of subtle, good, immersive moments of the film. So, but this 4K transfer looks spectacular.
Special features. Now, there are a couple lengthy special features and there's some new ones as well. So, right here, I'm going to pop and you guys can see the special features.
It has a new 4K remaster rich taken from the original 35 mm, uh, camera negative and it's done by Synapse. And then there's, as I stated, the Dolby Atmos, the audio commentaries with the director Paul Lynch. And then there is the Horrors of Hamilton High, the making of Prom Night. That's like slightly over 40 minutes long. New interviews. It is awesome. Great job. That's when the Red Shirt Pictures it comes in cuz he does Michael does fantastic interviews.
Um, seriously, every single one of them that I've seen like Trick or Treat is unbelievable special features. Oh my goodness.
Um, then there's Horrors' Hollowed Grounds, Prom Night hosted by Sean Clark and Scott on tape. Um, I think I've seen Sean Clark before, at least on Instagram, I don't know. Um, but regardless, it's just, um, it's like little it's where the film was shot. And so they go to those, um, you know, locations. So, that was pretty cool. That's about 30 minutes long, maybe slightly over. Then, there is additional scenes added for the television broadcast. Now, that is 11 minutes long, and you get to see scenes that were, you know, taken out from the movie, and there's like four of them, I want to say. Then, there's outtakes still gallery, original theatrical trailer, TV and radio spots. So, I'm telling you, I think this 4K release by Synapse is definitely one that I highly recommend.
Um Again, man, fantastic releases by Synapse. So, wonderful job, and great job, Michael at Red Shirt Films uh pictures for those fantastic interviews.
So, and I have to say, really, really quick, is I bought mine over at Orbit DVD.
They shipped very, very fast, and I got this, obviously, really early, cuz this is supposed to come out in August. So, Mark, amazing job. The packaging was fantastic, and shipping to my little neck of the woods was very, very fast.
So, thank you for an amazing shopping experience, as usual. So, thank you guys for watching. Hit the like and subscribe button. If you do, I'd greatly appreciate it. Check out those tier memberships. Thank you to John from Let's Talk Entertainment Media, William Driver, and have a great one.
