In 1986, the world's worst nuclear meltdown in history blasted the surrounding area with lethal radiation. It should have wiped these tree frogs completely off, but instead scientists recently discovered the frogs living in the high radiation zone had completely changed their color from vibrant green to pitch black. Why? It's melanin. The same pigment that darkens the skin also shields DNA from radiation. The normal green frogs just died off, but the darker ones survived and multiplied evolving in just 30 years.
