[00:15:10]Okay. So we are entering into today's class. Let us mark ourself with the mark of the cross. In the mighty name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit. Our father who art in heaven hallowed by thy name. Thy kingdom come.

[00:15:59]Matthew chapter 5. When we are moving into Matthew, St. Matthew's gospel St. Matthew's gospel is 28 chapters. In the 28th chapters nearly seven chapters uh it is a title called biatitudes.

[00:16:29]Biatitudes S. Matthew's gospel we have 28 chapters but in 28 chapters seven chapters called biatitudes.

[00:16:39]Initially uh in our first look we will be seeing the first paragraph only under the title of biatitudes. But when you are studying thoroughly you will understand chapter 5, chapter 6, chapter 7 is comes under the title of biatitudes. So what is the biatitudes? I will tell you the context of biatitudes first then uh I will explain you this.

[00:17:05]Listen very carefully. Now G St. Matthew is trying to present Jesus as a teacher.

[00:17:12]St. Matthew is trying to present Jesus as a teacher who teach like Moses uh like Elijah or other prophets in the Old Testament. I have told you many times couple of times I have told you St. Matthew's gospel is trying to St. Matthew's audience the relevancy of the recipients is very important. St. Matthew's gospel exclusively written for the written to the Jews. So the Jews audience and the relevancy of Jewish or Jewish audience is very important in the study. So St. Matthew is trying to present Jesus as a leader like Moses, leader like Elijah, a leader like David, a de leader like Saul, a leader like Gideon, a leader like someone Joseph.

[00:18:10]So this is St. Matthew's gospel. He is trying to deliver the message of Jesus or the teaching of Jesus in a way teaching of Jesus and he's trying to convey this message and he's trying to present Jesus uh seemed like Moses or someone like that. That is the reason we are reading here like this in biatitudes chapter number 5 verse number verse number one. When Jesus saw the crowd, he went up uh went up the mountain. See this, he went up the mountain. After he sat down, his disciple came to him. So this uh uh he went up to the mountain.

[00:18:54]There it starts he went to the mountain.

[00:18:58]So when uh St. Matthew is writing he went to the mountain, you know what will be the picture the recipients will get?

[00:19:05]They know in the history someone previously went to the mountain. Who is that? Moses.

[00:19:12]Elijah.

[00:19:14]Moses in Sai mountain. Elijah in Carmel mount.

[00:19:19]Are you with me? So Elijah and Moses.

[00:19:23]They were in mountain. They received the message and they have given this message to the people. From the mountain they receive the voice of God. from the mountain they in the in the valley they came and they they were uh telling all this message what God conveyed to them.

[00:19:42]So mountain itself St. Matthew is trying to convey, hey, this leader is like Moses. This leader is like Elijah. This leader is someone who has connection with this mountain experience. That is the first thing. Uh that is the first thing.

[00:20:07]Uh he's the new Moses, the new covenant and the new Moses. the new law from the mountain. This is the picture. This is the picture. When Jesus went to the mountain, St. Matthew is trying to convey the message like this. He is the new Moses. He is the new co. He is giving a new covenant. He is giving a new law from the mountain. He sat. That shows the authority.

[00:20:35]He sat means that shows the authority.

[00:20:38]Normally rabbi is the one who sit and teach in according to Jewish tradition or someone who has this background of scribe they were called rabbi rabbi rabbi rabi or rabbi so that that's what we are seeing here a mountain experience just as Moses received the law on the mount si Jesus ascends a mountain to reveal the fullness of God's law.

[00:21:16]He does not abolish the law but he fulfilled the law. See the connection.

[00:21:22]See the connection. Say in Matthew's gospel chapter 5 17 you read. Connect it. Do not think I have come to abolish the law and the prophets. So he is bringing what? Low.

[00:21:35]In who has given law? Moses was given law. Through Moses law was given. Now Jesus says do not think I have come to abolish the law. I have come to fulfill the law. The fulfillment of the law.

[00:21:52]Moses was talking about the law from the mountain. Jesus is talking about the law in the mount of biatitudes.

[00:22:03]Are you with me? So here St. Matthew is trying to connect Moses to Jesus. St. Matthew is trying to say Jesus is the new Moses. Jesus is the fulfillment of the Mos Mosaic prophecy. Moses received commandment in written stone in a written on a stone. in a stone. Jesus proclaimed the blessings that written on hearts.

[00:22:34]Moses the law was written on stone tablet for Jesus. He proclaimed the blessing which is written where in the hearts in the biatitude is a new covenant.

[00:22:51]new covenant character or a new covenant living.

[00:22:58]But Moses was given through Moses. God was giving what? The old testament law. And Moses was trying to convey a lifestyle.

[00:23:09]The new Moses Jesus is also in the mountain.

[00:23:15]He is sitting like rabbi.

[00:23:19]Are you are are you are you getting the context together? And he's also giving lows but those laws are not in the stone tablet but it is in the heart. This is the difference and this mount experience is the main thing. Uh St. Matthew is trying to convey Exodus chapter 19 Moses in Sai mountain. Then first king chapter 18 we are seeing Elijah in Carmel mountain. God's power is revealing. Then again we are seeing Jesus in another time in the mount of transfiguration.

[00:23:55]Some other time we are seeing Jesus again Mount Oliver.

[00:24:00]Then again at last we are seeing Jesus where in the mount of Calvary. So all this mount connections St. Matthew is trying to convey before what is the meaning? What is the real meaning? He is the new Moses. Okay, this is the introduction part where we are in.

[00:24:54]Now look at uh the first verse. St. Matthew's gospel chapter number 5 verse number one. After he sat down, St. Matthew is trying to say that word he sat down. Jesus is sitting and teaching.

[00:25:10]What is this? In Jewish tradition, rabbis sat when delivering authoritative teachings.

[00:25:21]It's simple word only St. Matthew is putting. But see the narration where he's taking rabbis with authority for when they teach authoritative teachings they used to sit. So Jesus is Jesus sits significance five things his authority his preeminence his wisdom his kingship king never stand and deliver some king will be always sitting in the in the in the in the in the in the in the in the >> in the chair >> in the throne that's king that's king so Jesus is sad. He sat down. St. Matthew is trying to say his preeminence, his authority, his wisdom. The king is king.

[00:26:14]The king is new teaching his kingdom. A new teaching of his kingdom. Now we are seeing in the in the second verse in the first verse in the second part his disciple came to him.

[00:26:30]The crowd listened.

[00:26:32]Disciples came near. You can see this gap.

[00:26:36]C. Crowd is sitting in a distance. But disciples are coming closer. Disciples came closer or near.

[00:26:48]Transformation belongs to those who draw near to God. Whoever is going closer to God, they are getting the real transformation.

[00:27:00]Many admire Jesus few became disciples.

[00:27:05]So these are the two levels Jesus is trying to convey. One is crowd level other one is disciple level. Crowd always far from Jesus but disciples what we are we reading here this his disciples came to him that means they were sitting closer to him. So St. Matthew is trying to narrate a picture. Rabbi Jewish rabbi is sitting in his feet.

[00:27:36]Disciples will come and sit. Rabbis disciples will come and sit. At the same time those who want to hear this teachings the common will be sitting outside outside the bretorium or those places in the das. It will be Rabbi and his disciples. Then the crowd here also Rabbi is sitting and teaching. That's what we are seeing in Matthew's gospel chapter chapter number 5 verse number one. So then he began to speak and taught them saying blessed are the poor in the spirit. So the biatitudes starts here.

[00:28:18]Eight biatitudes we are going to learn today. Are you with me?

[00:28:28]Eight biatitudes in Malam. We say how to say that in Tamil.

[00:28:49]Yeah, kind of a blessing. Then he he started uh speaking. So here you often you see this word blessed.

[00:29:00]Let me read this. Blessed are the one poor in the spirit. Blessed are those who mourn. Blessed are those who meek.

[00:29:08]Blessed are those who hunger. Blessed are those who merciful. Blessed are those who have thirst for the righteousness. Blessed are those who have pure in heart. Blessed are peacemakers. Blessed are those who persecuted for the righteousness.

[00:29:25]Blessed are you are people uh when people reveal you and persecute you. Re uh you utter and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and glad.

[00:29:41]So blessed blessed blessed blessed blessed blessed blessed blessed. You can see in Matthew chapter 5 more than eight times Jesus says first of all Jesus says blessed are the poor in the spirit.

[00:29:57]Bless secondly Jesus says blessed are the who one who mourn now blessed are the meek. See one by one get it. This is the reason you have 10 fingers. Come on get it. 1 1 2 2 2 3 3 3 3 3 Okay, what is the first one? Blessed are the one poor in the spirit. Okay, second one. Blessed are the one now more. Okay, blessed are the one meek. Blessed are the one who have hunger and thirst for the righteousness. Blessed are those Blessed are those who merciful. Sixth one, blessed are those who pure in the spirit. Sixth one, h blessed are the peacemakers.

[00:30:49]This is eight. Blessed are those who persecuted for my name's sake. Their kingdom for theirs the kingdom of God is.

[00:31:00]Then finally, this is the eighth one.

[00:31:02]Okay. Blessed are the one. Blessed are you when people reveal you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you in falsely account. So eight blessings these are the eight character characters of Christian life. Eight blessings and eight characters of Christian life. Jesus says blessed.

[00:31:37]Blessed. What is the meaning of the word blessed? From there I will start then you will understand.

[00:31:44]Moario is the Greek word meaning spiritually happy. Blessed means spiritually happy. Second meaning blessed means fered by God.

[00:31:59]Blessed means flourishing but in God.

[00:32:03]Blessed blessing is God's present not per not perfect circumstances.

[00:32:13]Blessing means not perfect circumstances.

[00:32:17]Blessing means God's presence in every circumstances.

[00:32:24]spiritually happy, flourished by God, favored by God, flouring, flourishing in God's righteousness.

[00:32:35]So God is calling us to calling us in this title, blessed. Everybody say, I'm blessed.

[00:32:43]>> I'm blessed.

[00:32:44]>> All of all of you say I'm blessed.

[00:32:46]>> I am blessed.

[00:32:48]>> Hallelujah. So let me this um eight blessings I will ask uh uh when I finish this fifth chapter.

[00:32:59]Okay this eight blessings um you know uh what is one by one I will I will tell you poor in the spirit means someone need God. Poor in the spirit means someone need someone in the need of God.

[00:33:15]Someone in the need of God. Spiritual humility. Say that word. Spiritual >> humbleness and spiritual humility. No spiritual pride.

[00:33:28]Okay. Listen listen. This is very important. I should I should have told you this earlier. Then only you will understand.

[00:33:37]To whom Jesus saying all these words.

[00:33:40]Then only you will understand why Jesus is bringing these is upset. Brother Pravin, this is Jesus is teaching against the Pharisees and scribes.

[00:33:53]So what is what is their position? They have self-righteousness. They are saying we are sufficient. We have everything.

[00:34:05]We fast three times in a week. We give tithe for everything.

[00:34:12]We never do any unwanted things in our life. We are the one strictly following God's law. So these are the audience.

[00:34:22]These audience will be revealing only after chapter 6. In between you can see the hint. If you are righteousness is not exceeding the righteousness of Pharisees and scribes, you cannot enter into the kingdom of God. The same chapter Jesus says but you cannot see the audience of St. Matthew directly but indirectly you can see the audience of St. Matthew in chapter 6 and 7. Are you with me? Say hallelujah.

[00:34:51]>> So who are the audience? Pharisees and saduses and scribes. Those who say oh we are sufficient. We have everything.

[00:35:04]We they are in the spiritual pride. No humility, no humbleness. They are in the spiritual pride. And they say we we we are in sufficiency. We don't lack anything. We don't we don't want Jesus.

[00:35:21]Self-righteousness in its extreme.

[00:35:26]What did I say? Self-righteousness in its extreme. You remember now Jesus tell the told the parable. Two men went for prayer. One was a Pharisee. Other one was a sinner, tax collector. And the Pharisee said, "Lord, I thank because I am not like him."

[00:35:49]Sinner. What did the sinner say? Lord, I'm not worthy even to look unto your face. I am the worst sinner. So you can see the mentality of the Pharisee there.

[00:36:00]So why why Jesus is bringing this subject now? They have no spiritual humility. They have no dependence on God.

[00:36:10]They have no empty hand to receive the grace.

[00:36:14]So audience are standing there Pharisees and scribes and these the saduses. Jesus says those who blessed are those who poor in the spirit. Now you understand the context right? Because these people have no spiritual humility, no dependence on God. Their hands are not empty to receive the grace.

[00:36:41]If your hands are not empty to receive the grace, where God will pour the grace, what is the biggest hindrance to receive God's grace? Spiritual pride. Everybody say spiritual pride.

[00:36:56]These Pharisees have that. That is the reason Jesus is bringing this. Now look at the context. Blessed are the poor in spirit for there is the kingdom of heaven. See Jesus says kingdom of heaven belong to them.

[00:37:14]>> Those who are poor in the spirit.

[00:37:16]Hallelujah.

[00:37:17]>> Hallelujah.

[00:37:18]>> So God hates what? Self-righteousness.

[00:37:21]God hates what? Self-ride.

[00:37:25]God God hails that I did this God so give me this that kind of mentality pride jealousy envy covetousness it says somebody say yo I'm I'm I prayed 10 hours God so you you can give me the that person is not depending on God's grace he is depending on his own ability his own ability Two extremes are there. One is self pity, selfdenial or self self myself is falling in the sin. Other sin is self righteousness. Both are same to God. This we don't know.

[00:38:14]Self-righteousness and sin both are equal to God. If you ask me, according to the New Testament understanding, self-righteousness is more than dangerous than the sins we commit because sinner can receive the grace anytime. But the self-righteousness person cannot receive the righteousness because he says I'm sufficient. I have I have everything.

[00:38:42]There is his hands are not free to receive the grace. Everybody say, "His hands are >> not free to >> not >> receive a >> His hands are >> not free >> to receive >> receive >> God's grace.

[00:39:08]>> Okay. So, what is the what is the second blessing? Look at the second blessing in chapter number uh 5 verse number um three uh verse number four. Blessed are those who mourn for they have they will be comforted.

[00:39:24]Those who mourn feel God's heart.

[00:39:32]They are they have grieve over sin. That's the that's the point. That's the point.

[00:39:41]They are regretting on their mistakes.

[00:39:44]That's the reason they are mourning.

[00:39:48]Compassion for others, broken heart before God.

[00:39:55]Mourning means a broken heart before God.

[00:40:02]A heart of repentance.

[00:40:04]So what God hates?

[00:40:07]The heart of self-righteousness.

[00:40:10]what God likes. The heart of regret, the heart of repentance, the heart asking for God's mercy, God's grace. So those who mourn now, what is the meaning now? We got it. They have regret, they have compassion, their hearts are broken before God.

[00:40:37]These kind of people are blessed. Why they are blessed?

[00:40:42]Because for they will they will be comforted by God.

[00:40:47]Oh, how beautiful it is. Those who mourn, they will be comforted by God because they are asking God have you have your mercy on me.

[00:41:00]Your mercy be on mine.

[00:41:04]Son of David, have mercy on me.

[00:41:07]Say that word. Son of David.

[00:41:15]He's mourning there. What will come? God's mercy will come.

[00:41:34]You know why? It is low. It is low. When you are low, when you are low, easily that water can flow. It's a big lesson. It is a big lesson. Whenever when rain comes, I used to run there and see from the from the B building. No, from the B C buildings. When rain comes, the starring road will be full of water and no water will stay there because terrain is like this. No. So all water will be going towards that trees when where where there we have kitchen and all. No those area the water will be going into that direction it never go up it always go down. So every time I used to learn from the holy spirit when you are saying god I'm a sinner god I'm not worthy. God give me your grace.

[00:42:31]May not be you are a sinner but you are you can say I am the worst sinner Lord I am not worthy to come in front of you when you say that you know what is happening that flow that flow when rain comes you can go and see this too much of water you can see large amount of water will be moving there because slope is there like that when you when you keep low when you keep yourself low when you mourn when you say poor in the spirit that flow will be towards you. That is the meaning of it.

[00:43:10]What is the meaning of the word? Fifth verse fifth. What is the meaning of the word meek? They will be inherit the earth.

[00:43:19]They will be inherited. First of all, see each each blessing will get God's one one favor. Look at the first one.

[00:43:29]Those who are poor in the spirit, they will get the kingdom of God. Second one, those who are mourning now, they will be comforted by God. Okay, look at the third one. Those who are meek, they shall inherit the earth. They will possess the land.

[00:43:47]If you are possessing more land means strength under control. Meek means strength under control.

[00:44:00]Humble and patient. Trusting trust God instead revenge.

[00:44:08]Instead of reven doing revenge, trusting God. God, I'm not doing revenge, but I'm trusting you. Meek, silent, silent witness. Say that word, silent witness.

[00:44:22]>> Like Mother Mary, they shall inherit the earth. Verse six says, "Blessed are those who are hunger and thirst for righteousness." I told you, see the hind, they have self-righteousness.

[00:44:38]They says we are not hunger. When your tummy is full, will you feel hunger?

[00:44:44]Will you feel something to eat? Now you may be feing feeling because you have gone to Patela and you have come back from pilgrim pilgrimage. No, now you will be feeling brother give me something to eat. You may be saying it right because lunch is gone. Right now it is time to eat.

[00:45:06]So those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, underline, underline, underline. This is very, very powerful.

[00:45:16]Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, what did the Pharisees say?

[00:45:21]We are the righteous.

[00:45:23]We are fasting. We are giving tith.

[00:45:27]We are the righteous. They have no thirst for another righteous. Another righteousness. What is the true righteousness? True righteousness is the right that you are getting to stand in front of God. From where you are getting it? You are getting it from the Lord.

[00:45:45]Hallelujah. True righteousness is the righteousness of God. What is the enemy?

[00:45:51]Self-righteousness.

[00:45:53]What did the Pharisees have?

[00:45:55]Self-righteousness. They say we do. We are perfect people. You are sinners. We are perfect people. They have no hunger for the righteous, they feel that they are full. Jesus says those who are hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be filled. That means they will be filled with the righteousness of God. We must have a thirst for the righteousness of God. Holy Spirit will come and teach you three things. What?

[00:49:59]Jesus says those who have thirst. Who are the righteousness? They will be filled with the righteousness of God.

[00:50:05]Whatever you are making here, that righteousness is the righteousness of men. The original righteousness is the righteousness of God which has to come from above. I am the person I can give you. Come to me with a thirsty heart.

[00:52:53]There are two two kind of people. One is peacekeepers and second one is peacemakers.

[00:57:03]Glad and rejoice, your reward is great in heaven. Same way they have persecuted the prophets who were before you. That means if you are going through allegations, accusations and persecutions, you are ordered in the lift of prophets.
