Millbank BagAñadido:
Afternoon, guys. I'm Dave Canterbury with Self-Reliance Outfitters and The Pathfinder School. And what I thought we'd do today is discuss the Milbank bag. And this particular bag is a Milbank bag made by Milbank Bags USA for Pathfinder. And Milbank bags in general are not just a piece of canvas folded over and sewn up. So, when you buy a Milbank bag, be sure that you ask if they're made to the specifications of a Milbank bag because this is a certain weight and weave of canvas that's made for pre-filtering the turbidity out of your water prior to further disinfection methods. Now, if I'm going to use a Milbank bag to collect my water, the first thing I want to do is I want to saturate that Milbank bag and get it completely wet.
And it doesn't take a long time to do that.
You soak it in the pool.
And then we're going to basically open that bag up and we're going to fill the bag with water.
And we want to let that thing drip. Don't worry about water being dirty coming off of this bag as far as this water dripping down into your container because this is only a pre-filter. Then we're going to hang it from a tree and collect that water into another container.
Now, remember this cup now contains dirty water.
So, what do we do to disinfect the cup?
We can do two things. If we boil it, we've taken care of that problem.
If we're not boiling, all we need to do is let the cup dry completely out in the sun because once it's dry, anything in that water is going to be dead. It has to have the water to live.
So, if we're just worried about things like cryptosporidium and giardia, it can't live without the water.
So, once it's dry, it's going to be inert.
All right. Once we've pre-filtered our water, we can then take that to the next step.
I would recommend this even if you're using something like a grayl filter.
This pre-filtering bag will dramatically extend the life of a filter if you're collecting water with lots of turbidity in the water.
And we do sell this millbank bag separate on our website as a separate item.
And I recommend carrying one of these for any type of charcoal, mechanical, or other type of filter that you're using to pre-filter your water.
