FIRST DRIVE! Mur Takes The P1800 For A Spin!Added:
Dan here DSP shop merge in the back. So we've been working on this thing pretty good for the last little bit and uh I gave it a quick undercoat. So what we're going to do now le we got to go through the wiring for overdrive. So I got this I think it's just back here. I tossed it.
This is it.
So this is some miscellaneous. It has its own harness and there's definitely some customization and it had the the tack in and everything. So, I just ran my own tack wire. I don't know what this is all RPM gauge. Why would there be >> I don't know where does it where does it go? Like where did the grommet go? Is it Did you find a >> See this go Oh, >> like this >> something. This Yeah, this is what this was. See, like there's a bunch of stuff that goes to the distributor and the coil. I just made my own wires for all this >> overdrive.
>> So, yeah. And this is overdrive, but these are all man-made like or whatever.
Like these are >> this is clearly an add-on harness that someone has made. And then like I don't know what all these are, but ultimately on the top of the transmission there's two switches. One controls backup lights and one controls overdrive. So, it's in fourth gear. You can put an overdrive. Yeah, >> this thing works with a gear bender, but you can't Well, I guess you could do anything you want, but it's meant to be in fourth gear. It puts power to the switch and then you can put it in overdrive. So, you can only run overdrive >> in fourth >> fourth. So, you can't, you know, split gears and you can't put in reverse cuz this is probably the same as a gear, but if you run it in reverse, it'll screw itself up.
>> Yeah.
>> So, I think I'm just going to kind of make my own wiring here cuz it's clearly nothing. Like, this is What are we doing? We're not put this in. I just wonder what where it came from.
>> It had its own harness. This was coil, distributor, tac, and overdrive. And this for some reason, >> so I don't know what I mean. Again, this has been >> H >> custom. So, I'm going to put the wheels on. We'll drop it down. Um, >> well, Danny printed out that wiring diagram that's over here >> there. There is no switch. Remember I told you that? So, it's supposed to happen on this car. There's supposed to be turn signal on the left and there's supposed to be it looks like a turn signal switch on the right of the column.
>> Yeah. that doesn't exist. And then when I back traced the wires that there was there was an add-on toggle that like screwed under the dash.
>> So at some point somebody has done something.
>> So I think I have a toggle or whatever we you know a wire. We'll have to just for test purposes.
>> So really all I got to do is run it from the transmission >> 12 volts switch and that's it.
>> Yeah. So, um, obviously that's where some of this has like fuse six or four.
So, that must be where it gets power from or whatever.
>> So, we're just going to kind of do our own thing cuz I'd like to take it for a quick Well, you got to take it for a test drive.
>> And, uh, down the road, just make sure it has overdrive and then, you know, just drive around a little bit and see where we're at. And then people keep asking bricks. You got to talk about that cuz I'm tired of answering questions about you being lazy about it.
>> Uh, yes. So, let's set the wheels on this thing. Drop it down and we'll just Oh, >> yeah. So, this does have a backup light here.
>> Yeah. I don't have It has a backup light. So, transmission has two switches. One's for overdrive, one's for if it's >> And but there's nothing there's no wiring. So, I have to make my own. But again, that's irrelevant. I can uh I can figure that out.
>> I just I don't know where it goes like into the transmission. Does it go up under the upholstery and then in by the transmission? It must, I guess. Or does it go?
>> Well, I'm thinking this is going to be whatever we want.
>> I guess you're right.
>> Couple of cell tappers under the car and it'll have 12 volts to it and we're good. So, >> anyways, let's put it together and we'll uh see where we end up.
>> Okay. So, we traced the wiring. Looks pretty simple. There's two pigtails coming out of the transmission, which is up top.
And uh so that's obviously your backup lights.
Cell make life easy. Hopefully this is not more than four liters. What do you think?
>> No, shouldn't be.
>> Shouldn't be. Oh, nothing's leaking out.
>> Did you tighten the top that you're supposed to?
>> It's definitely coming. Uh, no. We have to do upper control arm bushings.
I thought while it's up, we'll just do an oil change, which it hasn't had since probably the 80s.
>> Yeah, >> this is probably original dinosaur oil.
Um, and there's one wire by itself, which the way this works is 12 volts goes into the overdrive switch, which puts it to the transmission, and then once the transmission's in fourth gear, then it puts it back to the SW. So, this thing, if you leave the switch on, you put it go from third to fourth, will it go into overdrive immediately?
>> Immediately. Yeah.
>> So, it's not quite as smart as like the gear bender has a uh like a speed sensor in it. So, if you're not going fast enough, it So, so you can actually keep like make this thing a four-speed transmission, but fourth is just a bigger gear ratio.
>> Yeah.
>> In theory. No, that's that is just like Well, this is actually the smaller overdrive. Volvo had two and in 7T they went to a bigger one and that looks like your gear vendor, but the operating principle is the same. So, we put in uh about a quart oil in the transmission.
So, it's full. Has a bit of a leak to it, but we'll just fix it with brake clean. Honestly, down a quart in uh 30 years. I don't think that's too bad. E, we'll get that all dialed. Change this oil filter, which is kind of an upstairs job actually.
>> It kind of is. Yeah.
>> Which is a hassle.
>> Oh.
>> So, we'll put the pan out. We'll put some oil in, a little bit of Lucas, and then uh we'll show you the wiring once we get up top. It's super simple. And uh yeah, we're basically ready for a test drive. Maybe I'll do a little zip tie on this brake line or something like that or a fuel line.
>> This is just kind of a temporary. You'll actually So, everyone I'll give Mark credit on this. He doesn't get it very often, but I was saying, "Oh, I don't really want this to be at the bottom like the pickup. It'll get a bunch of junk out of it." And everyone had a bunch bunch of ideas which were great.
One person said, "We'll put a tea on it so it be out and then down. Then you can still drain it or whatever." And then Mr. came in, which I haven't seen in the comment section, with the true winner.
He's like, "Why don't you just take this out and put just a short piece of, you know, copper or whatever in there and solder it in. So, instead of picking off off the bottom of the tank, it'll pick up, you know, a half inch or whatever above. That way, all the junk will be at the bottom and it won't pick it up."
Actually, that was a really good idea.
>> I was right about something. Take note.
>> We'll see. But all of those were better ideas than well, nothing. So, we'll maybe I'll do a combination. I'll put a T in it with whatever. But the lower this hangs, the more problem you have.
Now, again, Mermaid the comment, if you're dragging the bottom of the fuel tank, you already have problems. So, not wrong. When Danny curbs this thing, supreme curbing, and it rips the fuel tank uh feed off of it. There's probably a few more things I'll need at the same time. Let's eyeball this under the oil filter and uh see where we end up.
Why' they do oil filters? It's kind of awkward, M. It's like they're ahead of their time and pissing off mechanics.
>> You know where it is on a small block Chevy?
>> The air filter's not on. It makes it much more difficult.
>> Small block Chevy is way easier.
This runs all the way down the side of the engine and all sorts of stuff like >> Oh, you're managing to hit the grain bucket, which is >> all Well, I've done an oil change or two in my day.
>> All right, Danielle, where'd you put that oil filter?
>> I gave it to you.
>> I tossed it to you off the >> And then I gave it back to you.
>> I don't think that's what happened.
We're going to put a genuine AC Delco on this guy cuz nothing but the best for my >> Nothing but the best.
>> Nothing but the best.
So, we'll do this. Actually, you can uh I'm going to pull that funnel out of the waist thing and it'll go from a waste funnel to a new oil funnel. Where' I put it?
Oh, right there. Just blow that out with some brake clean.
And you could do the sufficient amount of oil going in there.
Always lube up your gasket, Daniel.
Don't forget that, gentle.
Only making a hecking mess.
And what is it, Daniel? Snug plus 3/4 of a turn.
Is that how you usually do oil changes?
Okay. Actually, I don't know if we mentioned it. We did a couple of days ago the valves and stuff and this thing uh actually looked like it had a decent amount of oil changes in its day. It wasn't completely sludgy and gross in there.
>> Yeah, it it actually was actually pretty darn good. Put >> a little bit of Lucas in there. I've mentioned it before, but I used a little Lucas at oil when I do my oil changes.
And uh one of the young guys there said, "Lucas, what are you doing with that?"
Whatever. He goes, "That's for old people."
>> What else did he say?
>> I don't remember.
>> Said, "Did you use out you drove your Model T to >> Oh, yeah. Uh President Ford or whatever."
>> Who was saying that?
>> The guys at work. I did an oil change on the on the green truck. So, I just brought in uh like obviously the oil and I put a little splash of Lucas in there.
What's that? And he said, "Yeah, did you put that in your Model A when you drove to high school?" Holy moly. The attitude of these young kids these days, I tell you. Vampur snapper. Oh, where's my L?
Dang it. We need Is there a screwdriver?
the wrong one. But >> you do the job.
>> Well, Danielle, I'm really good at using the wrong tool for the right job. What these hold? Four liters merish.
>> Yeah.
>> Minus filter minus Mon Lucas.
Okay. Top this up. And I hooked the tap up. I want to start it. Make sure there's oil pressure and see if the tack on there works.
Be pretty sweet.
Should we bring a fire extinguisher, Danielle?
Is there enough room beside you?
Where are the fire extinguishers?
What was that?
Do you know where the fire extinguishers are? No.
Does it Does it have brakes after we did all that?
>> Yeah.
>> All right. Oh, he's going to try and find a fire extinguisher. You can back her out. Let it warm up.
Oh, there's no window.
>> I didn't want to ask what happened. I >> That's the anger window.
>> I thought it would might be us.
It's smoky.
>> I know. Why is it so smoky? Like Well, all that stuff you poured in. I guess what I poured in it.
>> Well, all the oil and crap like that.
>> That was in the oil.
>> Yeah, that shouldn't affect combustion.
Well, I couldn't find a fire extinguisher.
>> It doesn't smell like coolant or anything.
>> No.
It wasn't smoking like when we did the carbs and stuff. So, no, it does seem like moistury.
What do you think?
We'll see if it'll clear what we drive. That's very strange. It is white kind of smoke though.
kind of smoking up front, too.
>> Got to be crap burning off the exhaust.
>> I guess it could be. I just spray it with all that undercoating and stuff, >> but it's coming out the tail pipe for sure. But it is definitely smoke underneath of this.
>> The brakes. Do you have to adjust the brakes like just I think the the shoes because it's they're low like they pump up. So, it's just >> just the adjustment.
>> It seems okay.
does seem like a lot.
Does kind of seem almost Yeah. oily or something.
Could be.
Did it do anything there? I don't think so.
Cuz it was just What was that yesterday?
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Maybe it'll clear out or needs a head gasket.
Look at that.
>> Speedometer works.
>> Yeah, speedometer works. Just the tag doesn't and the fuel gauge doesn't.
All right. You want to try put it in overdrive or you can assist gear?
>> Oh yeah, that's third gear though in >> Yeah.
>> Put it in fourth.
>> Oh yeah.
>> Look at that.
>> The overdrive works. This thing is ready to go on the highway.
>> Yeah, we're getting ready to cruise pick up chicks.
>> They won't fit back here.
>> Well, just the one.
>> It's a good thing we're skiing now. Is there supposed to be trim that goes here or not? Or is that just metal?
>> Yeah, there it's part of the Well, I don't know 122. It's wind lace. Yeah.
Guess we can turn around.
>> Go up to the road and do a lower.
>> See, when it pops like that, it's cuz it's too lean. Is this cold now? You know, so if you were like a a flat, one flat on each >> or just pull up the choke a little bit.
Is it still It's not smoking as bad. Not great.
Not great.
>> Oh, well like it steers the gun. That's pretty good. It's >> almost like you put in a bunch of front end parts.
>> Yeah.
>> Didn't mess with the alignment.
>> Three pointer. Oh yeah. I guess I might do a U-turn. I'm not used to that.
Sports cars.
>> Look at that.
It's not supposed to get bad when you did that run through the clutch or is that just I don't know if it's slipped or it's >> put some miles on it. Worst case got to pull the out for a clutch of less.
>> Oh. Yeah.
Well, you got to take the crossmember off to do that little mount anyways.
>> So, I'm halfway to doing a flush.
>> That's right. Yeah.
>> Well, I think the thing ran a drone, so I'm sure.
>> Yeah.
>> Good.
>> Oh, I mean, for good for having been apart for >> 30 odd years. Yeah.
>> I can go down the road and do a little U-turn down there, too. Whatever.
>> That's pretty good. Overdrive work. So, now I just got reverse lace to deal with.
It really is not too bad. I told mom to come and take the pictures.
I'll just go through here. We'll come back and get a picture.
We're stopping the video for a picture.
So, she's very slow. She was not prepared at all. But you're going to get nothing. Nothing you wanted is happening there.
>> No, I Well, I just feel like it's slipping in the clutch there.
It doesn't do it.
>> Well, it's not not real heavy, but wait till it's driven up.
>> Yeah.
>> And it's >> We're not towing anything.
>> No, like for for for cruising around.
>> For driving around. I mean, for been a part a million years. That's pretty darn good.
>> Well, this thing was the same. Like the other Volvo, you had to whack the clutch. And then this one had to whack the clutch. Just like you said, you have to do with the 123 every year. So, >> yeah.
You turn here.
>> Yeah. The oil pressure still.
It's going to change the lights in the dash. I guess I grab the tap. This thing actually turns pretty good.
>> Yeah.
Steering returns.
>> Does this thing have cancelling signals or not? Really? No.
>> It should have.
>> Oh, yeah. Man, look at that.
>> How about that? What a hot run.
>> See, now I can actually put the steering wheel on straight as the steering wheel.
Like I said, should be like this.
>> Yeah, it's all peel off. The steering wheel's just barely on, actually.
>> Yeah, I saw that.
>> Wow. I had to take it off again.
Smell like it's burning. Oh, now you're on the road. Yeah.
>> Okay. Well, we'll see you back in the garage. The plan, Danielle.
Okay, now what everyone wants to see.
Danielle crawling out of the back of this thing in a very sexy manner.
>> My croc.
>> Your croc.
The seats do go forward. Or you didn't put it in gear.
>> I put it in.
>> I put the E brake on.
>> No, you didn't.
>> I did.
>> You couldn't pull it hard enough.
>> Well, >> Danielle's had a lot of force. There you go.
There you have it. So, it still smokes a little. I don't know what that's all about.
>> Well, it wasn't smoking like that when we were doing it. It's got to be burning off or else like the valve seals are not great. Like it's goes down in the valves. But >> yeah, >> I think we would have noticed if it was puking out like that.
>> Yeah.
>> I'm not bringing any chicks with me.
>> So, we made her back.
What is this?
Where?
What the does it go? I need I need a light or something. Anyone?
>> What's that?
>> I can't. Oh, here it is. I'm jamming the wiring. I see.
I just wanted to disconnect the battery just in case. So, it went on the block. probably the >> got to adjust the rear drums which I just do from inside that little plug.
>> Take out a little Yeah, take out the little plug and >> and so that'll be good. There's just a little of adjustment.
>> Oh, this was probably >> not ideal.
>> So, we got to do Actually, I got to wire up that >> thing which works. So, that was good.
So, we'll get that going. Put wipers on it. But the wipers do their thing.
>> Yeah.
>> And looks like it might be actually leaking a little bit of fuel there.
Might be a stuck float t.
This is the top of that front carburetor bowl.
>> Mhm.
>> It looks wet.
>> Or is that just >> It's not not on the bottom. So >> So maybe it's just who knows? Might just be a little seal in there.
>> Yeah. Well, you can blast them all with carb cleaner and stuff afterwards.
>> Yeah. But I mean this thing it got the temperature overdrive worked. That worked. That was nice. So this thing's actually >> That's a big win. Just making sure that >> didn't didn't clink or clank around. No, it's actually pretty quiet.
>> Steering is good.
>> It's good. Yeah, steering is good. And >> seat is small but comfy.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, I forgot to power.
>> I forgot to check and see if the charging system works now.
>> Oh, did you ground the >> Well, I just There's two screws. One's missing, but one they were loose, so I ground I tightened it up.
>> Just uh Is there no You know what? There was Was the light on the gen light?
>> I don't think it was, but I Well, >> here. Just this has a voltmeter on it.
Just start it and see if it's charging.
The wires were kind of a little Yeah. 13 volts.
Rev it up a little bit. Oh, wow. It's close enough.
>> Yeah. Yeah, it's good.
>> That's pretty good.
>> So, it doesn't really idle. It doesn't really charge much at idle.
>> No, it No, it's a generator. It doesn't.
But, uh >> Yeah. I still think I'm going to >> put an alternator on it.
>> Yeah. I'll modify a bracket up, put a Chevy one wire on there just because >> Yeah.
>> I have lots of stock of those.
>> Yeah.
>> A little But but it wasn't smoking as bad in here now. Uh, no. Maybe it's just from all that stuff when you were spraying. Maybe it's just burning off. I don't know.
>> Yeah, I did get the exhaust pretty good in the muffler and all that. It could also just be moisture in the exhaust.
>> This was it second drive in 35 years, so that could be part of it.
>> It's pretty good. So, I mean, there's still lots of little things here kind of go through, but honestly, we're kind of at a pretty good spot. So, that >> the length of time you've had this and how it is now, that's pretty darn good.
That's >> well I got to make sure. So the plan is I'm going to drive it this summer. Then Mer can pick it up on his way to Victoria >> and he can drive it all winter and maintain it and do all those things and then bring it back.
>> Seems like a pretty good deal, right?
You can show off all your old cronies at the car show.
>> See, I got to take it in for an alignment real quick and then, you know, I meant to order. I got to get some like weather strip and stuff like that for around the glass so when you slam the door at 100 mph, it doesn't blow it into pieces.
>> And you need glass.
>> I have another door outside. So yeah, I got to swap that.
>> I thought we were not mentioning that.
>> Oh, we mentioned it.
>> Oh, do we? Okay, >> put this thing. Yeah, needs a little bit of love. They can go in the pole bar and then we got to get on that reg. Okay, so thanks for watching all the bubble content. Now we have to Mr.'s here. We should answer him some of the questions people are asking. People always Myrr and they spelled M E R.
>> Yes, I know >> that's my favorite.
>> Yeah.
>> So anyways, nobody cares. Um the Brooklyn, where you at with that?
>> How was the Brickland? Well, at the end of last year, I got all the pieces for all the brakes and front end and all that stuff. So, that's all done. So, it has a brake system now and uh and that all works. And the lights, turn signals, all that sort of stuff works. What's left is I got to find some AMC trim stuff, which is not easy to find cuz everybody threw it out many years ago.
just things like the knobs for the wipers and the headlights and all that which >> should be no deal but it's you know a Chevy available in any rock a hornet or a >> anything so but that's minor and then the next thing is to sort of fix all the cracks in it and I figured out the reason why the whole roof was heaved like that is when the cars were built they epoxied it and then riveted it and the rivets hold the epoxy until it dries. Well, the epoxy has let go. So, the rivets have popped out. So, I have to take the doors off the vehicle, drill out the rivets, clean them all, put new epoxy, new rivets, and then put it back together and do 2,000 hours worth of body work, which I'm not going to do.
>> Yeah. Are you're not going to fill the cracks? Are you just going to leave it as is?
>> I'll see how it is. Like, I like I like it to get it so it looks sort of in one piece, but we'll see.
>> Patina, man.
>> Yeah. I don't know.
>> The easy way out.
>> Yeah. But other than that, like it's like it seems to run decent. I haven't done anything with plugs or any of that But >> no, I think I did something to it maybe.
>> But it's got like I got the power steering. So power steering works now >> and alternator to put that on. It charges electric cooling fan. I got a you know >> I just drove. I mean just but enough everything kind of >> Yeah. No, the rest of it it seems to be okay. And then I got to find some different seats cuz the seats that I was going to use, those ones you gave me, I thought they were perfect. I painted them brown to match the car, when you put them in, they stick out just to the point where the door hits them.
>> I actually got some really nice seats here, but unless you want to strap them to the roof with a beam.
>> No, it might be a little tough. I'll I'll find some some smaller little car like I saw one that had Mustang early Mustang seats and they were fine and they looked good.
>> Mustang two seats would be good, too.
They're easy and a little headrest in them. Ah, that's down the road. And then got to find something resembling carpet and like that. And uh >> might I suggest astroturf astro?
>> Amazon has it. Yeah, it's by the foot.
It's by a roll.
>> Yeah, just get it out and put it in there. Then you can water it.
>> That's pretty good. What else? What else people ask about? Why is he come out here and help more? Why is he lazy? Hey.
Hey, you could fly out anytime for a weekend.
>> You just don't. We We should drive this to Winnipeg actually this year. Maybe we could take this in the 123 for a drive together, huh? cuz it's done. It runs and drives.
>> Oh yeah, runs and drives.
>> Daddy can drive this. She'll have to learn how to drive stick on this thing.
Oh, >> this is this is easy to drive. It steers nice, >> daddy. All the time you guys are always like, "This one will be easier. This one will be easier." It's never easier. I don't like it.
>> Well, it's not a big block Nova. So, >> how hard can it be?
>> Oh, this the steering is light on this.
The problem you're going to have is you got to fix the seats because it's way too low for me. So, which means you'd have the steering wheel.
>> I actually kind of like I mean I think it it fits me better being that >> Well, all the all the things are missing though on the bottom.
>> Yeah. But it's the right I feel like I'm in the right spot to be under the steering wheel. The steering wheel's low.
>> Well, you're the one that's driving it.
So, >> well, I'll have to do something. But yeah, all the the strapping is no, but it's nothing. It's four bolts. Pull the seat frames right out and then just it's just that that you only have just take the seat bottom out and it just goes back and forth. It's >> Yeah, it's like threading a >> Yeah. Yeah, >> an old lawn chair type thing. You do with some funny colors even >> wrapped around a couple of staples.
>> And then Yeah. So, basically this thing needs a couple of shop or extension stops or whatever. Steering stops, >> rebound straps. Yeah.
>> I need transmission mount.
>> Transmission mount.
>> I need the trim around the sides.
>> Got to get the fuel gauge working.
>> Yeah, the fuel that's the next thing.
But I did just put another 5 gallons of fuel in here. It doesn't appear. It doesn't smell like it's leaking.
>> No. So, if that's good, then I'm fine with maybe just being cheap and see if I can a fix the sender.
>> I think I think those will come out. I mean, mine were worse than that.
>> Yeah, >> because they always the trunk seal leaks and they fill up cuz it's the lowest part, >> but I got mine loose like just with the air chisel just to knock it gently.
>> Guess I'll just leave some oil on. So, the way this works is the fuel it's like a Mustang. The fuel tank is the trunk floor and then the sender is the lowest point in the trunk. So, water gets in there. this thing. This is the tank that was in that parts car which had no deck lid or quarter panel. So, it got lots of water in it, but >> it actually cleaned up pretty good. So, it's just it's reading all the way full, which is like a short.
>> So, probably if we take it apart, maybe just cuz it's just like a little reostat like a >> like a headlight switch.
>> Exactly.
>> So, we can kind of clean that up maybe nicely. Or >> Mine was seized absolutely solid and I just >> worked it worked it worked it. It works fine.
>> Or it's rotted away. There's nothing left which makes you know you're replacing it.
>> Yeah, I guess.
but all that. But overall, I mean, it's >> a really good car. So, like >> we paid a couple grand for this thing and then I'm $700 or $800 in the parts and I stole the wheels and tires off the other car. So, >> that's >> I think that's that's a steal anybody's book.
>> I think this is pretty good. Oh, I never put this trim on. Actually, I meant to do that cuz this is >> Oh, don't you don't want to lose that >> sitting on there. Yeah, we'll have to do that before we take it for a long highway test drive. And then radio >> radio antenna on the back. It's very spiffy.
>> Yeah, I need a You know what I need? You probably have them is I want the little ones. You know what I mean? Cuz it has a It's a ridiculous ugly one. So, >> well, I used to be able to get those at Canadian Tire. They were short and they were rubber and they don't seem to sell them anymore. Those are great. people stopped putting AM radios in their car in the 1990s. But >> yeah, otherwise a little bit of wire clean up, make tack work, and I think that's it. So, >> give it a darn good bath under here.
>> Yeah, it needs pressure washing.
>> Yeah, get that all done.
>> I think that's We're putting this thing on pause a little bit cuz we got to get that red Chevel going cuz that's going to go on the next road trip. This is just kind of a fun little >> Well, now it starts, it drives, it moves, you can put it in a new storage area and it'll be just fine.
>> Condo.
>> The condo. Storage condo. We call it >> storage condo. what we call it. Yeah.
>> Hot rod condom. All right. Well, thanks for watching. Hopefully the last three or four videos weren't terrible to watch with Mr. here. I mean, he was. You asked for it. So, this Mr. is the classic.
Careful. You ask for it.
>> Hey, it worked out good. You earned your keep here.
