Emotional neglect and emotional abuse are fundamentally different: neglect leaves you lonely and unmet, while abuse changes how you see yourself. To distinguish them, use three diagnostic checks: (1) The Reach Check - in neglect, your attempts to connect go unmet but you're not blamed; in abuse, you're blamed for bringing up issues and pressured to apologize; (2) The Pain Check - in neglect, your pain is unanswered; in abuse, your pain is minimized, twisted, or dismissed; (3) The Change Check - in neglect, you feel stuck but not actively blocked; in abuse, nothing changes because you've adapted to walking on eggshells and second-guessing yourself.

Emotional Neglect vs Abuse? (Most Get This Wrong)Added:
If you've ever walked away from a conversation feeling confused, guilty, or like everything somehow became your fault, this video might change how you see your marriage forever. [music] Because there's a difference between emotional neglect and emotional abuse.
And most people don't realize when they've crossed that line. So today, I'm going to give you three clear checks to help you understand what you're actually living in. Why? Because if you can't tell the difference, you'll stay stuck trying to fix something that was never yours to fix. Some partners can't give what they don't have. Others don't give what works in their favor to withhold.
Let's get started. Check number one, the reach check. You reach for him. What happens? For example, if he rolls his eyes or shuts down and you say, "What just happened for you there?" Or he just stops mid-conversation and says, "Never mind." And you say, "Can we just talk this through?" In emotional neglect, he misses. [music] It might feel awkward, disconnected, but you're not targeted. In emotional abuse, it flips. Suddenly, it's all about him.
You're blamed for bringing it up, and now you're the problem. And you feel it happen. You go from trying to connect to explaining [music] yourself, and then softening what you said, maybe even apologizing just to calm things down a little bit. Your reach doesn't just go unmet. It gets redirected.
Now, this next one cuts pretty deep, so pay close attention here. Check number two, the pain check. When you share what hurts, what happens to your pain? When there's emotional neglect, your pain is just there, [music] unanswered. You feel alone in it. In emotional abuse, however, your pain gets used against you. [music] Minimized, twisted, dismissed. You walk away feeling smaller or like you were wrong for having feelings at all. Now, this last one is way too easy to miss leaving many women stuck for years. [music] Check number three, the change check. In emotional neglect, you feel stuck but not actively blocked. There may be effort even if it's limited, but in abuse, nothing changes. Why? Because a pattern is working and over time, you started changing and shifting to adapt instead. You're walking on eggshells.
You're second-guessing yourself. You're shrinking. Neglect leaves you lonely.
Abuse changes how you see yourself. And once you see this clearly, you can't unsee it. You're recognizing patterns.
If you find yourself needing some help in going deeper into this, watch my video here on the difference between a hard marriage and an emotionally abusive one. That's the next step. I'll see you there.
