In Patch 12.1, Unholy Death Knight receives a major rework with new tier set bonuses: the 2-piece bonus allows casting more powerful Necrotic Bolt instead of Frostbolt with 130% increased damage and 13% increased Withering Grasp damage against enemies below 35% health, while the 4-piece 'Lord of the Dead' bonus enables spawning liches that deal AOE damage and chain abilities to additional enemies. The Army of the Dead ability has been redesigned so that every Putrify summons a mage, but when three mages are present, they sacrifice themselves to become a lich. Soul Reaper no longer consumes Putrify stacks but instead consumes three Lesser Ghoul stacks to summon them instantly, changing the burst window management strategy.

HUGE CHANGES TO UNHOLY DK + NEW TIER SET / Midnight Season 2 / 12.1.0 PTR
Added:All right, chaps. It's me is obviously I bring you another video today because last night they dropped a massive amount of information about Unholy DK DK. To be honest, just the patch in general had a massive info drop. Um, but there's a lot to talk about when it comes to death knight. Mainly our tier set, our uh reworked unholy to be frost was largely untouched to be honest. So there's not really much to talk about with frost apart from icy death torrent. We will touch up on that. Um, but it's very very exciting news. We also know some of the items that are going to be dropping from the new dungeon, Alter of Fangs. And one things first, look at the state of that.
That is beautiful. That is a That is a stellar mount. That's crazy good. Well done. Well done, Blizzard. Anyways, from the same very fame boss, there also is this trinket called added Armani war banner. Now, what did I ask for yesterday? I said we need in the new dungeon some sort of 1 minute 30 thing that gives us like mastery something good. Plant the banner for 15 seconds and fills you with battle fervor granting 460 of your highest secondary stat and defeating at least one enemy will extend the duration by five seconds. Brilliant. This is literally going to be the best trinket that we're going to be searching for. This in conjunction with probably the D of Nellak trinket. This is a really good one. I love the ward lower unless the raid brings us something crazy which we don't actually know yet.
>> [clears throat] >> That's going to be a really good setup for trinkets for unholy. But look at something else. Look at that.
That is insane. You got the elite. Oh, DKs are eating so good. This set is insane. How is anyone expected to achieve anything in this climate when you have sets that look this good?
People are going to be bricked up from log in to log out. Okay, this is crazy.
The sets this season are fantastic.
However, the people that have kind of lowled their sets, I think warrior looks repo. Evoka doesn't look very good and I don't think kind of okay for demon hunter but poor demon hunters. So basically demon hunters and evokers just get the same sets rehashed. But this just looks like the that set from Trial of Valor. Same like color schemes and stuff for for male users. Anyway, the fact that it's got this little like roaring thing kind of saves it. It's not too bad. But DK's Oh, lovely stuff. I wish we had a bit of an animation, but I think that that that's so cool. Look at the little like neon skull in the grave cage. Yeah, super sick. We also know what our tier sets actually do as well.
So, let's quickly grab those. So, they wanted to create tier sets that just do something a little bit extra that mean a bit more, more than just sort of like passive increase. So, let's take a look at Death Knight. The frost two set bonus each time remorseless winter damages one enemy gain freeze freezing tempest which grants attack speed and 4% increased icy death torrent damage. This is probably going to guarantee you playing icy death torrent. So be honest breath bane might be dead. Who knows? For bonus remorse winter deals extra damage, but this is nice. We wanted extra damage from remorseless winter. This is probably going to force remorse win talents and freezing tempest last 5 seconds longer.
You're definitely going to be forced into IDT. You're definitely going to be forced mortal winter. Then you have unholy two set bonus. Your majest of the dead and lord of the dead.
I'll go into that in a minute. Cast a more powerful necrotic bolt instead of frostbolt and withering grasp in shadow bolt. Also bonus crotic bolts damage is increased by 130%. Withering grasp damage is increased by 13 well against enemies below 35% health, giving us a very nice execute threshold. We already had a good execute threshold. Now we have one that's even better.
What the hell is Lord of the Dead? Well, what is the one thing as an unholy commander of the dead that we couldn't spawn? Liches.
We can spawn liches. We can command liches. How [ __ ] metal is that, bro?
So, as part of the class changes that happened to Unholy. Now, these are the changes for unholy for death knight.
Frost got basically no changes cuz frost is perfect. It doesn't need a change. It's good. I think frost is is lovely. But what it does need is a little buff, right? So, I'm sad to not see that. But then Unholy had another [ __ ] rework.
As if we didn't have enough. But they don't like the fact we spawn too many ads. So, they are now trimming that down and they're forcing us to spawn stronger ads more often. Rean animation has been renamed to Lord of the Dead. Secondary effect has been redesigned. So you still summon a mage every time you cast putrify, but every time you have three mages, they sacrifice themselves to become a lich. And this lich will will do AOE damage just like how medicine mag um your magis's cleave potential. It will also affect Lord of the Dead. The same way. So this is really cool. What does this look like? Well, let's just spawn three magi and then they all die. Now, Lord of the dead. How cool is that? We finally get the lich that we always wanted. So, this lich hits very hard, bleeds very well, and when you spec into venison major, your lord of the dead frost bolts will now chain to three additional enemies as well. So, he he already chains with shadow bolt. Uh but then as soon as you spec into menacing, he'll now chain his frost bolt as well. But obviously our tier set being as good as it was, tier set now makes bolts instead of frost bolts, which I think that they just act exactly the same as what our necrotic bolts do and extra damage.
Yeah, that's that's the f that's the most interesting change with unholy.
then you you no longer uh get additional damage for having more magi up.
Obviously, this wouldn't really work.
This wouldn't really synergize very well the fact that we got three mages. So, they've reduced they've just removed this. Instead, they've given a bit of extra damage to putrify because the automatic ones used to happen at 60% effectiveness. So, 60% damage. Now, they're just they're just like a normal putriy. when they go off past outbreak and do not set to passive. Go plague will occasionally fire. Go and automatic. Right. And now it still does that, but it does it for full damage.
There's no buff that's increasing the damage of uh project coil or graveyard for having a magi out. That used to be.
Now it's just And that's passive so I don't just fight [ __ ] in combat. So the next big change is that soul reaper no longer consumes putrify stacks. Hell yes. That that was I hated that. I thought that was that was so dumb because in AoE it made it so difficult to decipher whether or not it was soul reaper time. Now soul reaper time is a lot more often. No longer consumes put charges of putriy to cast but it does consume three lesser ghoul stacks to summon them instantly. Those lesser ghoul stacks do not recover the cool down of putriy. That needs to change. I think that really does. I think when you cast soul reaper just flatline get 15 seconds back off of putrify or or something. I don't know.
But the fact that it uses three lesser ghoul stacks to summon them instantly. I don't think I like that part. Also that this is completely null when you're in your burst phase because when you're in Army of the Dead, you're locked to eight minions. So if I cast Army of the Dead now, you summon eight minions straight away. You can't summon any more than this. You're locked to eight minions every time you consume a ghoul stack.
Get some cool stacks. You consume one.
You just order your minions to do something.
Let's get some cool stacks.
Now, order your minions to do either a single target hit if it's single target or an AoE hit if it's AoE by casting ski striking as extra stacks. You don't get anymore. You get like empowered versions essentially. But this means that Soul Reaper kind of consumes three stacks for no reason because now can't order them to do anything. It's not the same as Skirth Strike. Skir Strike has to be the one that consumes these ghoul stacks. I think they should change this as well. I think as it shouldn't be tied to scourge strike. Actually, let's just read it quickly. Probably doesn't make much sense, but it's this part here.
Uh second bit. While active, your com you you command your army through scourge strike, executing orders based on nearby enemies instead of summoning leagues strike with you, dealing shadow damage to your target. This is the single target hit. Epidemic order. Unless the goals erupt in Vera dealing shadow damage to nearby enemies is the AoE here. You cast soul reaper and consume those three stacks doesn't do any of these. So I think it shouldn't be tied to scourge strike. It should just be consume tied to consuming a anyways that damage is okay actually. I did some testing and the damage wasn't too bad. Uh especially the epidemic order that's actually decent. Then uh then we have medicine mages add this effect the lord of the dead frost bolt training leag damage increased army leag damage reduced by 20%. Necrotic damage increased by 20%. Graveyard damage increase. One of the dead got a nerf.
Instead of 1530 damage increase, it's now 20 uh 1020.
Ruptured this era now deals damage reduced beyond five targets, reducing our AOE potential from the the Sera Epidemic Order makes our ghouls do and then players other than the death knight can now only see three lesser goals at a time. Anybody that's not a death knight right now is is reing.
However, I want you guys to see when I'm I'm full full mast, dude. I want you to see all my all my boys.
Okay, so that's all the changes to unholy. Pretty cool. I I love the fact that we've got a lich. I'm all for summoning more empowered versions of ghouls as opposed to summoning like a million of our of our [ __ ] versions.
But I'm excited to see how this might change our burst, change our opener. But in general, I want to see how this plays out with the T set and things like the new trinkets. I'm really interested to get my hands on these. But exciting nonetheless. In terms of like the the talent tree, talent tree is largely unchained unchanged, sorry. But because we've seen a buff to necrotic bowl, imagine feast of souls creeping its way up being the meta choice in terms of ride of the apocalypse. So far, there's no real change to to make it seem like San Lane might come out the woodwork.
Nothing's really happened to prove that.
Um, but one thing that is odd is you are casting less putriers now. So, when I was hitting this dummy for a little while, I noticed that you're not really able to get as many putrifiers. Oh, not able to get as many putriers out as you used to be able to. I'll just go for it now. Open soul reaper. Now, I'm going to passive. Do that. do this putrify. And now I want to kind of recover as much as I can. You're going to get round to the next 45 second cycle. And I'm not going to be able to do this lastify that you used to be able to do. Like if I do this putriy now, I'm not going to have three for my next burst window. So be interested to find out what is going to be the better choice there. Obviously I'll press sorry panel. Bang. Does not consume future. Lovely jubbly. This just means that you want to use it as much as possible. There's no real downside to using Soul Reaper now, except you do want to try and do like a double Soul Reaper movement where if you're going into a burst phase, it makes sense for you to hold Soul Reaper, Soul Reaper, Dark Transformation, putrify, putrify, hold this next Soul Reaper, and now cast it again at the end. So, Soul Reaper no longer saves you globals because it does. That's interesting. you you are kind of hard locked to three putriers per burst window or you can go four in your army and then two in your dark transformation afterwards. But we'll see. Things will probably change.
