Severe thunderstorms require specific atmospheric conditions including moisture, instability, and wind shear (changes in wind direction and speed with height) to develop, and meteorologists monitor these systems using radar and storm reports to issue timely warnings and advisories to protect public safety.

Gracie Fuller's Sunday evening weather
Added:Welcome back. We are still in our storm alert weather day as severe thunderstorms have been making their way across parts of our viewing area.
Meteorologist Gracie Fuller is here with the latest. Hey, Gracie.
>> Hey, Grace. So, just a couple hours ago, almost two to three hours ago, I was setting up for the 6:00 p.m. show, ready to talk about some severe thunderstorms going through Alabama. They ended up coming up with many special weather statements, even some severe thunderstorm warnings in our region. So, it started with this aerial flood advisory. As you can see, all the rain's moved out, but looking over, we have tons of activity over in the Tennessee Valley and in our region. So, it started, we had some severe thunderstorm warning that went through Hamilton County here in Chattanooga. We had that severe thunderstorm warning go through all of our Georgia counties in the northwest from Dade, Catoosa, Walker, Whitfield. We do have still have a severe severe thunderstorm warning was extended into Murray, Gilmer, Fannin.
And then even looking, we had it extended to Polk County up into Marion, McMinn. We even have it extended into Cherokee, North Carolina. So, as you can see, I'm definitely hopping around here on our radar and you can see when these exactly expire. I'll go ahead and move over here. So, when I was on the live stream, the live stream's still on now, it was really cool to see. I would say, "Hey, this is on your back doorstep."
So, this has moved through, it's not a stalling system. I know if you tuned in last Sunday, we had that system stall over Scottsboro, Alabama, the Alabama region, getting 7 inches of rain. This is definitely a big rainmaker right here, um just west of Blue Ridge. That's going to be the heaviest part of this system so far. It is going to be a rainmaker, but at least it's moving.
Ringgold once over here in Chattanooga, about an hour and a half ago, received very heavy rainfall. And you can see these little circles right here, if you're able to see them, those are storm reports. I checked before went live, those are actually some downed trees.
So, this line is very hefty and it hasn't really seemed to be weakening. It did seem to kind of weaken more in that northern portion from Cleveland, but it's very strong right now just west of Blue Ridge. And Blue Ridge earlier had some isolated cells in it anyway. So, this is kind of just a radar lap of the past few hours. So, you can kind of see whenever I started that live stream for the first time, we just had special weather statements. We ended up getting our first severe thunderstorm warning, and then just look at these light up like a Christmas tree across our map.
So, definitely a um storm alert weather day, and we have had some active weather. I do know we were also tracking some areas of rotation. The good news is look, this has um the rotation has definitely um diminished a little bit about an hour and a half ago. Very broad areas, nothing tornadic, but I do know this morning when the chance was going through, we didn't have anything called shear. Shear is a change of direction and speed with winds as you go up in height in the atmosphere. That's kind of how you have that more tornadic development um severe weather. But, we do have all the other ingredients for severe weather, and that's prevalent.
Lots of storm reports. I know earlier the Storm Prediction Center, if you watch this morning though, it was the risk was more towards Gilmer, Fannin, Northwest Georgia, you know, Cherokee, North Carolina County, but they extended it all the way east up until Florence, almost to Mississippi. And that was a good idea because these heavy storms that have power outages like Grace is going to mention, these heavy storms that have those trees down, these originated all the way in northeastern Mississippi going through Alabama. So, definitely been a very impactful Sunday.
The good news is that at least it's going to be out for your Monday. So, like I said, the damaging winds, you can kind of see I still have some of those trackers on, but damaging winds has been all throughout Chattanooga. We've even had some reports in Ringgold, north of Chattanooga in Red Bank, reports power outages all around. I'll let you know more details coming up. Tune in on the live stream, too.
