Woman Wakes Up Trapped in a Bunker, Unaware If the Man Saved Her or Kidnapped HerAdded:
At the beginning of the film, a young woman is packing her belongings in a rush. She makes a phone call that leaves her emotional and devastated after a fight with her fianceé. Unable to handle it, she decides to leave home, grabbing a bottle of beer to calm herself. While driving, she receives a call from a man named Ben, her boyfriend, who begs her to come back, insisting it was just a small argument. She hangs up, turns on the radio, and hears reports about severe power outages and extreme weather affecting multiple cities. Moments later, Ben calls again, but before anything else happens, she suddenly gets into a car accident. This is where it begins. This is 10 Cloverfield Lane.
Michelle later wakes up in a locked room. Restrained and confused. She struggles to free herself, but fails.
Looking around, she spots her belongings nearby. Using an IV stand, she manages to pull her phone closer, only to realize there is no signal. That is when a man named Howard enters the room.
Terrified, she prepares for the worst, but Howard appears calm. He insists she needs to stay on the IV because she is still in shock and even gives her crutches since her leg is injured.
Still, she does not trust him at all.
She threatens that her boyfriend will come looking for her with the police, but Howard calmly tells her that no one is coming. He then hands her the key to unlock herself and leaves the room.
Despite that, she immediately tries to escape.
But when he returns, her attack fails.
When she wakes up again, Howard is sitting in front of her. She begs to be released, but he explains that she is lucky he found her and saved her from the crash. According to him, there is nowhere else she can go. This only makes things more confusing. Howard then reveals something shocking. He claims there has been a massive attack outside, possibly chemical or nuclear, and that the air is no longer safe. He insists that his bunker is the only secure place left. Still desperate, she asks to use his phone to contact her family, but he tells her that everyone outside is already dead. Suddenly, a loud noise echoes from outside the room. Another man appears named EMTT. He explains that he willingly entered the bunker and confirms that the air outside is contaminated. Soon, the three of them move into the main living area of the bunker, which turns out to be fully stocked with supplies and surprisingly comfortable. But no matter how safe it looks, it is hard to believe that the entire world could collapse this quickly. At the same time, Howard does not quite feel like a typical kidnapper.
He is oddly polite, even caring in some moments, which makes everything even more unsettling. Still, she cannot ignore her doubts. She asked Howard to contact the police, especially after hearing what sounds like a car above the bunker. But he insists that all communication lines are down, and if there really was someone outside, they would already be dead. As time goes on, Howard grows increasingly irritated by her lack of trust. Eventually, he decides to show her something. They pass through two secured doors leading to the outside.
For a moment, it makes his story feel real, but then she notices something else. Howard's pickup truck is parked nearby.
Just like that, her suspicions return and she begins to believe that everything he has said might just be another lie. Michelle is approached by EMTT and she immediately starts asking questions about Howard. EMTT explains that Howard used to serve in the Navy and that he spent everything he had to build this bunker. EMTT himself even helped with the construction. He also claims he witnessed the attack.
According to him, there was a sudden red flash in the distance, followed by a massive explosion. In a panic, he rushed to the bunker, but Howard almost locked him out. Even after hearing all that, Michelle still cannot fully believe it.
She is certain she heard a car above them. Later during dinner, EMTT tries to lighten the mood, but Howard's behavior becomes increasingly unsettling. His emotions shift quickly, and he gets irritated far too easily. Realizing that the car keys are in Howard's pocket, Michelle begins to manipulate the situation. She deliberately acts friendly toward EMTT, knowing it will provoke Howard. As expected, Howard becomes jealous and angry, directing his frustration at both of them.
>> Trying to insult me.
>> SHUT UP AND STAY IN YOUR SEAT.
>> I'll behave and I'm so sorry.
>> It does not take long for Howard to realize they are missing. When he gets distracted by a noise from above the bunker, Michelle takes her chance.
Howard immediately chases after her, but she manages to reach the first bunker door and slam it shut behind her.
Outside, she spots another car. Just as she is about to escape, a woman suddenly appears, desperately begging to be let in. She looks terrified, claiming she is fine and only slightly hurt. At the same time, Howard keeps shouting from inside, warning Michelle not to open the door.
Caught between the two, Michelle freezes, unsure of what to believe. In the end, she makes a choice. She turns around and goes back inside the bunker.
Back inside, Howard finally admits the truth. He explains that he panicked when the attack began, losing control of his vehicle and causing the accident. After that, he gives her a set of clothes that once belonged to his daughter, Megan. He also reveals that the woman outside was named Leslie, his neighbor. Someone who knew about the bunker.
>> I'm going to need some stitches.
>> Why do you want me to?
>> This is your doing, isn't it?
>> Feeling conflicted and starting to trust him, she agrees. He goes on to talk about his daughter, explaining that Megan was taken away by her mother, who believed his behavior had become increasingly unstable. That night, Michelle and EMTT share stories about their past. Michelle admits that she has always run away from her problems, but now she wants to change. Days begin to pass. They watch movies, play games, and try to maintain some sense of normal life. Then one day, everything shifts again. A loud rumble echoes from outside, shaking the entire bunker.
Howard claims it might be an enemy helicopter passing overhead. Moments later, an alarm suddenly goes off. The system is warning them that the air filtration has been compromised. If it is not fixed quickly, they will run out of breathable air. Because the ventilation shaft is too small, Michelle is the only one who can fit inside. She crawls through the narrow space and eventually reaches the top where she manages to repair the system. While she is up there, she notices something else.
There is a ladder leading to another exit, but it is locked. And scratched into the surface nearby, she sees a single word, which is help. Michelle tells EMTT that Howard has been lying all along. She becomes convinced that something terrible must have happened to Megan. To prove it, she shows him an earring she found above, stained with dried blood, identical to the one in the photo. But EMTT reveals something even more disturbing. That earring does not belong to Megan. It belongs to Britney, a girl who went to school with his sister. Britney disappeared 2 years ago and was never found.
At that moment, everything becomes clear. If they want to survive, they need to take his gun and escape.
Michelle then comes up with a plan.
Using her skills and creativity, she decides to make a protective suit out of the shower curtain. Meanwhile, EMTT secretly takes a pair of scissors and hides it. To get the materials, EMTT tricks Howard by suggesting that Michelle might have contaminated the air filtration system and spread it into the bathroom.
It works. They gain access to the shower curtain and begin working on a suit and a gas mask. But there is a problem. The materials are only enough for one person. That means one of them has to go out and find help. While Michelle continues working on the suit, Howard suddenly enters the room. Luckily, they managed to hide everything in time. He then orders them into the bathroom, bringing along a large barrel.
>> It's highly corrosive, dissolves most biological material on contact with humans, right down to the bone.
>> Howard reveals this after finding the scissors and tools. He knows they are hiding something. In that moment, EMTT takes the blame. He admits that everything was his idea.
I wanted your gun and so I was thinking about to get it from you.
>> He apologizes but before anything else can happen.
>> Michelle is left in shock. Howard then calmly explains that EMTT had become a threat to their survival. As Michelle struggles to process everything, overwhelmed with fear and grief, Howard suddenly returns acting as if nothing happened, even bringing her ice cream.
The shift is unsettling. After he leaves, Michelle finishes the suit in the gas mask. She quickly hides the mask inside the ventilation just as Howard is about to come back in. He checks on her, then starts to leave. But when a bolt suddenly falls, he turns his attention to the vent. His hand almost reaches the mask, but instead he notices something under Michelle's bed, the suit. Howard's mood changes instantly. Furious, he confronts her, and Michelle runs. He chases her through the bunker, but she fights back.
Even then, he keeps coming. Michelle grabs the suit and mask.
By now, the bunker is starting to catch fire as the acid damages the electrical system. Michelle escapes through the ventilation, barely managing to get away as Howard makes one last attempt to stop her. This time, she makes it out. She puts on the protective suit and finally escapes the bunker. Outside, she rushes toward Howard's car, but the suit suddenly starts leaking, sending her into panic. She quickly patches it up, trying to stay calm. Then she looks up.
A flock of birds is flying freely across the sky. In that moment, she realizes the truth. The air is not toxic. Howard had been lying. Her emotions spiral. She laughs in disbelief, then breaks down into tears. Realizing how completely she has been deceived, Michelle climbs onto the car and looks out into the distance, spotting an aircraft approaching.
Moments later, the bunker explodes behind her.
The blast draws the aircraft closer, and that is when the truth is revealed. It is not a military plane. It is something else entirely. The craft descends and releases a creature into the field as if checking what remains of the bunker.
Michelle freezes, unable to process what she is seeing, then runs toward Leslie's car, but it is locked, and the alarm suddenly blares, exposing her location.
With no other choice, she sprints toward a nearby shed and hides inside. That is where she finds Leslie's lifeless body.
As she searches for the keys, the creature begins closing in, nearly catching her. She manages to escape just in time, but the aircraft returns, releasing a powerful gas into the area.
Thinking fast, Michelle puts on her gas mask, but this time it only tears away the mask instead of killing her. At the same time, her car is lifted off the ground by the alien ship, leaving her with almost no options left. For a moment, it feels like the end. Then she notices something. The bottle of beer she had earlier, the same one Howard kept. In a desperate move, she turns it into a weapon. With precise timing, she throws it straight at the alien craft. The explosion hits its target. The ship is destroyed, and somehow Michelle survives. She quickly gets back into her car and drives away from the chaos. As she travels down the road, a radio broadcast comes through warning that anyone hearing it is still in a danger zone. Survivors are gathering in Houston and they are calling for help. The message claims that the battle is being fought and more people are needed.
Michelle listens in silence. Then she makes her choice. Instead of running away again, she turns the car toward Houston, ready to face whatever comes next and finally take control of her own life. So the moral of the story is never trust a guy with a bunker, mood swings, and free ice cream. And always keep your beer because it might save your life later.
